"Avalon" pt2 aka And The Squee Continues...
Finally watched "Avalon" pt2 *does the victory dance* Am now downloading "Valley of Darkness" cause I sort of forgot doing it before *cough*
Anyway, "Avalon". My love for S9? Is still going strong.
I might have enjoyed that episode even more than the first one - and that's saying something - because of how darker it became in the end. I think what I loved so much is the sense of, I don't know, foreshadowing maybe and also the whole 'going back to business' thing.
Part 1 was awesome on many levels but it leant on the comedy side, right? I mean, yes Mitchell's past situation was certainly not amusing, but the episode itself was. It was hilarious at times, and intense and freaky it was not. Which suited me just fine at the time, I was happy to get everything I got and it was a nice introduction to the new season as well as to the new characters. But with that part 2, it's like we can officially say they were lulling us into a false sense of safety - to our pleasure, mind *g*
The first half of "Avalon" pt2 followed the same pattern as pt1: we had the funny and the snark and it was good. I laughed quite a lot and I had to rewind a lot of scenes because sometimes... there's nothing else to do. Mitchell is still awesome and the Vala-Daniel dynamic is still making me feel all tingly inside... as well as cracking me up each time they open their mouths. They're special those two... on many levels *g* I love pretty much all their scenes together, it's as simple at that *shrug*
So the first part of the episode was funny and snarky and overall light, and that's when it sorta subtly changed and we went on more serious business. First it was back to doing crazy things like playing with alien devices hoping they'll do what we expect them to do... without killing us in the process if possible, back to meeting new races and mingling with them and trying to stay out of trouble... and of course, failing. And then it got even more interesting because of the sudden turn of event.
I was laughing at Daniel and Vala's antics up to the weirdo-but-quite-stylish-stake scene - and I do mean that I was laughing even then. The fire was running its course and Vala was explaning what might have gone wrong exactly and this was pure Vala and then Daniel went "Oh oh OHHHH" and I was laughing because yeah, my beautiful and snarky and funny Comic Duo was still doing their thing... but then I wasn't laughing anymore. Like... I was all tense and, yeah, not laughing.
Sure, I knew that Vala wouldn't die but I didn't expect them actually going through with the burning alive thing. Usually they save the day right before it goes too far. But they fucking didn't here! She was fucking burnt alive - whatever I knew about her not dying for real didn't matter all of a sudden because she was going through something horrific and violent and just, okay, they were taking a turn to something grittier and darker without even warning us and suddenly I wasn't sure what was going on exactly. It's like you believe something or someone is going to get there in time to save Vala from her fate because they can't let her die like that, right? Not burnt at the stake, not that way! But then you have to acknowledge the fact that no, nothing is going to happen... or yes something is going to happen but not before Vala has died and wow, that wasn't nice - except it was, in the sense that it was intense and unexpecting.
So I liked the change of tone... gave a nice feel to the episode somehow. Also keeps us on our toes, I suppose. A sort of warnings that we shouldn't let ourselves be blinded by the pretty and the funny and the snarky. Well, I'm not going to stop loving those, but I'll be ready for bad things, alright *g* And speaking of serious and not nice, Teal'c own situation isn't the most comfortable either... there's trouble in paradise, and when I say 'paradise', well that's not exactly what I'm thinking either. It's quite sad when you think of it. Teal'c was believed to be a traitor for the longest time, fought to free his brothers for years and years... and now that he finally succeeded and should be worshipped - except not because it's bad, of course - he's actually finding himself estranged again! Talk about ironical. Only in a very bad way. Poor T.
Something else I enjoy is how Daniel is behaving. Doesn't it feel like we're getting a little of earlyseason!Daniel? And I guess it would only be fair since we seem to be getting a lot of earlyseason!Teal'c. But I just adored Daniel in those two episodes... the fire, the talk-so-fast-that-I-actually-have-difficulties-making-out-what-he's-saying, the hyper thing... the stubborness... It just rocks! I also loved his little speech about the Stargate program's reason of being: "meeting new races, gathering advanced technologies and learning a bit about ourselves in the process". Sounded so much like, yeah, what Daniel believed back in the days.
Oh and did you see? Vala and Daniel turned Quantum Leap on us! That cracked me up lol
Damn, this new season is going to bring me a lot of joy lol Also, I was right in deciding not to read the spoilers *is proud of self*
And you know, each time the dreaded "to be continued" appears I have to blink at the screen because I'm like "But it started only five minutes ago! How can it be over already?" Forty-two minutes? Really isn't long enough *sigh*
And look at that, the episode has been screencaptured. When I clicked on the link to Destinies Entwined, it made me smile because I realised where I was exactly. TS and SG... they go hand in hand quite often, don't they? *g*
Also, I hope there are icons? Cause I need S9 icons! And the 100 Icons thing too - I'm hoping that by repeating that over and over again, it'll happen soon.
