Competition between the networks is cut-throat and it controls everything about American TV.
It dictates what kind of shows we'll get on regular network TV versus cable or versus premium channels (ie, network TV plays it much safer to attract as many people as possible, so edgier shows like Nip/Tuck or The Shield have to be on cable, and the high concept shows like Deadwood or Rome or Carnivale have to be on the premium channels where people will pay for them).
It's also the reason why really crappy shows can stay on the air when good shows can be cancelled (since crappier shows take less money to make and need less viewers to offset the costs, whereas higher quality shows cost more to produce, so if their ratings don't make up for the cost, they're toast while the crappy shows stay) -- something I HATE WITH A BURNING PASSION.
And believe me, I feel your frustration, particularly since most of the time I'm not interested in whatever events are going on. *pouts*
While we're talking about scheduling, I seem to remember you mentioning that SN is moving to Thursdays? When's that happening?
