You go to sleep with a working mailbox and you wake up to an empty inbox without any of the folders you created. It's not the first time it happens, but usually when I do my stuff it comes back - it hasn't this time. If I don't reply to your comments, it doesn't mean I'm ignoring you, it just means I don't have them anymore.
You go to sleep on a discussion in one of your list, and when you wake up the shit has hit the fan, and one of your favourite dark writer has pulled her fics down!
Dammit, this day isn't starting well in the cyber department! lol
When I tell you that the writers/readers in the SG fandom don't like to dwell in the darker stuff as much as in other fandom! It reached a new level yesterday when someone sent a message where the darker readers/writers were once again accused of being sick and disrespectful and what not.
I usually don't reply to that kind of mail, because I know it's usually the beginning of a nice little flame war, but dammit I was definitely starting to feel tired of people dissing the darker readers, so I replied to the original mail last night, and I'm glad I did now.
Of course, other listsibs joined the bandwagon during the night, and when I woke up this morning, Fra told me to check out the ML because the shit had hit the fan so to speak, and hear this Pepe decided to take her fics down! *sigh*
Why can't these people understand that everyone has different taste, period? Why can't they just accept the fact that some of us love and crave the darker themes, and that it is not a capital offense?
I mean, is it that much of a difficult concept to grasp? If you don't like BDSM don't read it. If you don't like DD (Domestic Discipline) don't read it. If you don't like rape, violence, torture or I don't know, just stay the hell away from those fics, and be done with it. There definitely are enough categories to please everyone, to satisfy every type of readers. It's the wonder of fanfics.
I never ever had any problem with people who hated all those genres. I never even considered why I would. I know it's not to everyone taste, and I'm fine with it. It's okay to like it, and it's okay not to like it. It's as simple as that. Based on the same principle, those readers have the right to say they hate that kind of themes and explain why. This is giving an opinion. But giving an opinion isn't judging someone because of their tastes. That's where the difference is - to me, I mean.
I agree that if the warnings aren't explicit enough it's the writer's fault, but let's face it, usually they do warn their readers. If those readers still choose to read those stories even though they know they're not going to like it, so what? It's their fault, their responsibility, why would they diss all of us afterward?
I just don't understand why all the fuss. If you like to read slightly different Jack and Daniel, it's your right. Why would you have to stick to one characterization, one plot, one storyline, one theme? Talk about boring.
My liking darker stories doesn't mean I don't ever read other themes either. It doesn't even mean it is how I see Jack and Daniel; it only means it's how I like to see them portrayed sometimes. I like reading different versions of them, because it brings new level to a fic I'm reading. That's all. And even if I did see Jack as a mean bastard, it would be my right, anyway.
It's like tasting different flavors of ice cream. So now, I'm just supposed to like vanilla, is that it? Should I try some more exotic flavors, it means I don't know what ice cream really tastes like, and I just have bad taste?
Wow, that's mature and intelligent, I'm so impressed!
#1- Everyone has different tastes. It's okay, it's not evil. Contrary to popular belief, we all are entitled to have our own opinions. It doesn't mean your opinion is right and theirs is wrong, it only means you have different ones, period. Different doesn't equal bad, I thought it was obvious by now.
#2- Fanfiction is FICTION. Someone who loves reading Jack rape Daniel isn't a closeted rapist - I'm sorry to disappoint. They don't condone rape in any way or form in RL. Someone who loves reading Jack (or Daniel, okay) beat the shit out of Daniel isn't beating their own partners or their kids. It's just something they like to read in *fics*, deal with it.
#2b- Someone who loves to read Jack spanking Daniel to punish him for whatever offense doesn't automatically mean they're spanking their partners for the same reason in RL. It's just a kink they have when reading stories. It won't bring evil to the world, I promise.
#2c- Someone who loves to read Daniel being raped/tortured is not disrespectful to those who actually go through trauma like this in RL. To be honest, I'm rather appalled that some people even think we do. It does NOT mean the reader/writer condone the act IRL. God, that's so offensive.
#3- Everyone has a different view of the characters. It's okay as well, it's not evil, it doesn't mean their perception is worse than yours, it just means it's different, see #1.
It's always the same story, but it's getting so old *sigh*
Also, and to be fair, it didn't happen only in the SG fandom of course. Actually, the same thing happened to a writer I really like in TS and who definitely writes on the very kinky side of the road. She pulled her fics down as well, but she created a ML afterward, so I can read her fucking brilliant stories.
Hey! I think it's one of the first time I used the cranky mood... wow.
Okay, now I'm going to read the flist, I'll feel better afterward *g*
And PS; Doesn't Jim look awfully cute in that mood icon?? *cooes at sulky!Jim*
