So that was Doctor Who, huh?

After seeing one too many Doctor Who squeeing post, I decided to give that new series a shot and finally see for myself what the fuss was about. So I downloaded "The Unquiet Dead" and... well, I wasn't exactly enthralled, I'm afraid. I mean, from what I heard I was ready to hide behind my sofa or something. Isn't that series supposed to be freaky and scary? Sadly, that's not what I saw at all. And I wasn't expecting to be blown away btw, so it's not as if I had set my expectations too high either. Also I'd heard everywhere on my flist how Billie Piper had improved as an actress and obviously I didn't know her from Adam but you mean to tell me that this is the improved version? I thought there was something off with her...
But I'm not giving up on DWnor on Rose and I'm willing to give it another chance because sometimes you see the light after more than an episode so I'm downloading the pilot this time. Maybe if I start at the beginning of the new series, it'll give me another perspective. Also, I'm telling myself that when you know nothing about Doctor Who-verse, you might need a little more time to get into it.
Because the extent of my knowledge regarding DW? Is the following:
Tom Baker.
Paul McGann doesn't count.
K9, which makes a shiny 30th birthday present.
Watching Doctor Who didn't make a believer out of me but it sure made me want to watch my QAF UK DVDs again!
Also, DW fans out there? I have one or two questions. First, and not to play on words but who is the Doctor exactly? Or what? Is he a human from the future or an alien or... what? And why does he travel through time anyway? In Time Tunnel and Quantum Leap, Tom, Doug and Sam didn't exactly have a choice but what about the good ole Doctor?
Finally and without the slightest segue, here's a link to a post I thought was both brilliant and hilarious: getting into fandoms is like buying a car. Fans are my favourite people. They're crazy and sometimes damn annoying and petty but they also bring you little gems like this one - that was just plain sweet *g*
But I'm not giving up on DW
