SG 9x05 -"The Powers That Be"

Before I even start, a Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] fluterbev, one of those wonderful ladies you congratulate yourself on having on your flist *g* Hope you had an incredible day with your boys *kisses* Let your muses be always inspired... which, come to think of it, as wishes go is kinda selfish, but that's beside the point *cough*

Changing the subject - today I managed to watch "The Powers That Be" - twice in a row, even.

Okay so I shall begin with teh shallow and teh funny because after all, that's how the episode started before it turned all serious and shit.

Part 1: The Funny

So in no real order.

#1- I still adore Vala. And so far, I'm definitely not getting tired of her attitude - or the way TPTB [ours, not the Ori's] include her in the episodes. Not even a tiny bit. She cracks me up as ever and she has awesome lines, and er also the best outfits ever! When she appeared as Her Highness I was, well, maybe drooling a little, okay I'll admit! But just... the leather? Won't ever get overrated in my world, hail to leather, but what she was wearing? Was so very sexy, pfew! *fans self*

#2- Speaking of the moment when she appeared - well, see the moment right before she did? When her faithful-but-deceived-worshippers popped in the cave and faced Teal'c, Cameron and Daniel? Well, this is just a tiny detail but how much did I enjoy the Daniel sandwich - with Teal'c and Mitchel on either side of Daniel, raising their weapons while Daniel was raising his arms - during that scene? How much - well, yeah this much! And I quite loved the other Daniel sandwich - right at the end - still with Teal'c but with Vala on the other side, this time. I quite enjoyed the sense of protectiveness at that moment.

#3 - The play cracked me up. Loved the whole scene - and in particular the following visual:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Don't they look cute? And I know, I'm easy - that's not what I asked, man!

#4- Daniel's "SHUT that thing off" cracked me up too. It's just the way he said it - don't ask.

#5- Enjoyed how Teal'c seems amused at Vala and Daniel's antics.

#6- Actually, I enjoyed - in a damn-they-crack-me-up way - the whole first part of the episode. The whole Vala In Prison thing. The Vala on Trial thing - I did laugh a lot with all those. The Comic Duo is still going strong, all right *loves*

Speaking of love, I'm going to copy [livejournal.com profile] spikedluv and include some quotes because seriously, sometimes, you can't not do that kind of thing *shakes head*

Mitchell: And they couldn't tell... the difference? *whispering to Daniel and Teal'c* Why am I not surprised?

Daniel: Trust me
Vala: *gaspsqueals* *turns her back to Daniel in a flourish*
Daniel: *kinda sheepish* This time.

Mitchell: They're going to put you on trial.
Vala: I liked my plan better.
Mitchell: Kinda is your plan. Twas named after you.
Vala: *wide eyes* Really, a Mal Doran! They're going to let me be the judge?
Mitchell: I don't think so
Vala: Then it's not a real Mal Doran, is it?

Vala: I apologise for ever doubting your masterful skills of negotiations!
Daniel: He's doing the best he can.
Vala: That's what terrifies me.

Vala: Making people feel good is a natural talent of mine.

Mitchell: You stealing this planet's most valued treasure is the least of our concern.
Vala: I like your attitude! I was thinking of cutting you boys 10% but I'm now thinking 25.

Mitchelle: He's good.
Vala: I'm dead.

Mitchell: He's pretty good too
Vala: We are so dead.

Leader Guy: We must give in. They're too powerful.
Vala: No. It's okay. I''m here -> which isn't funny at all, I just loved how she said that.

So anyway we had the funny, and then we started with the serious.

Part 2: The Serious

I was going to say that after last week's atypical sg episode, we were back to a "classic" one this week, but that would sound almost odd to my ears since to me, there's nothing really "typical" with SG-Mitchell v SG-1. I'm not complaining since I've been - obviously - enjoying that ninth season tremendously, but I do see the difference - in pace, in structure, even. So maybe I should say that this was supposedly a "classic" SG-M episode. And I did like it. A lot.

What I enjoyed the most is how the episode kinda contradicted itself from start to end - what I mean is, it starts out as a funny and light and typical Let's Deal With Vala Disastrous Plans storyline then turns into something serious and complex and darker too - to a certain extent. It also shows SG-M doing Their Thing, ie engaging a struggle with the Prior, totally expecting to win because They Know They Are Right... and turns out they're totally defeated by aforementioned Prior - even better yet, they have to admit they lost and and they have to accept to play by the Ori's rules. That was a nice twist. Mighty sg-m getting beaten at their own game. Seems they'll have to re-think their strategy over if they want to win the next round.

I'll enjoy the fight a lot, believe you me ;-)

I didn't really imagine they would admit defeat like that. Usually, Good Guys go all the way when they know they're right, and damn the consequences - which, btw, always strikes me as a) selfish and b) stupid, because like, if you know you can't win, why don't you just back down this time and fight another time, when you're stronger? But I'm digressing, so yeah back to our team - here, they actually agreed with me, and I thought Daniel's "I was wrong. I undersand now" line to the Prior was brilliant.

It must have been so fucking hard to metaphorically bow to the Ori and accept that they were the winners this time around. I certainly didn't expect that in Stargate. We didn't even get one of those stalemate situations where both sides are more or less even, here it was checkmate in favour to the Ori all the way. Those guys certainly know how to make a point *is kinda impressed*

Everyone was back to square one - I mean, Healed Guy was supposed to spread the word and tell the others what he'd seen... cue to sg-m trying to show the wrongness of the situation... cue to confrontation and all. Fine. But the end of the episode arrives and we're basically where we started -except that instead of one guy, the Ori showed their powers to a whole village. Damn, they even brought the dead back to life. Lovely! [/sarcams]

Once more, I'm feeling sad for those who stay behind once sg-m goes back to Earth. I mean, what will the villagers do now? They were ambivalent before... they were scared but now they know for a fact the consequences of disobedience... talk about a choice. But actually, I thought it was quite interesting when Kinda Leader Guy explained to Daniel that sometimes, you don't have a choice... that sometimes, you can't do anything but cave in to "higher powers" even though you know they're wrong for you, because in the end, you don't have any other solution. That was quite sad.

The episode also brought me some great Daniel scenes, and I'm quite partial to those, let's be honest. I loved his first verbal confrontation with the Prior - and the whole Knowledge is power theme delighted me to no end *g* Also, now that Daniel adressed the subject of why the Ori want everyone to bow to them and all, I'm curious to know too. Also gives some more substance to those guys. I mean, they're not Bad Guys just because that's what they are, ie it's their roles in the series, thanks, but maybe there's something more here. Nice.

Something else that was interesting in "The Powers That Be" is how we were confronted with the consequences of Vala's... way of life, shall we say. I mean, we're usually thinking she's so funny and so cunning and so hot and just so Vala and it always makes us laugh - well, for the part of the fandom who likes her, obviously - but this time we were seeing her behaviour through the eyes of the deceived one, we were seeing her actions from the other side of the mirror so to speak, and it didn't look so funny anymore. That was nice as well.

The one thing I'm having problem with maybe is that it does seem sg-m is divided into two subgroups. Teal'c and Cameron on one side and Daniel and Vala on the other. I agree with... whoever it was that said that more inter-team interaction would be nice - forgot who said it, so sorry!

Cameron has been wanting them to be a team since day one... now they're indeed more or less a team, but maybe they should try to really go all the way. But maybe things will change a bit when Sam will be back? We might get more of a "regular" dynamic by then. Who knows...

Yes, still enjoying the season ;-)

Oh and btw, [livejournal.com profile] artifuss is officially my #1 s9 icon dealer. She's been iconing each episode since the premiere and just, how much do I love her for that, really! New batch - for "The Powers That Be" - here - that was fast, too!

Lastly. I still haven't watched "I, ET" - not because I didn't try but each time I got ready to sit down and watch it, something happened that distracted me. But since I have no intention of setting a foot outside tomorrow - bar one reason, but it'll only be in the afternoon if it happens - I think I'll finally have the opportunity to do so then *fingers crossed*

I just can't wait to comment on this week's SG1 S9! But, of course, my comment would probably be much more meaningful if I hadn't turned off the episode half way through and leave the room. I gave up, seriously...no more for me. So...um...sorry to rain on your parade chicklet. No more snarky comments from me, no siree. I wish you and your newfound love all the best.

::dramatic exit::

I knew it lol

And seriously, I don't think anyone could rain on my parade ;-) So you know... farewell, kind lady *bows*

Just popping up from the office to say that I'm going to watch Dead Zone tonight. I also wanted to show you the adorable icon I found at [livejournal.com profile] tapis. :-)

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Nice! I'm curious to see what you thought of it - you'll write a review, maybe? Or just let me know, then *is so very self centered*

And that icon is just the cutest thing ever lol

[identity profile] aswanargent.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the show and will keep watching it. It's much more to my taste than Wanted, the new series on TNT that a section of my flist is in raptures over because of a certain actor who's a regular on the show. To me it's just Crazy!Beecher with a badge, a gun, and a Fu Manchu moustache running around the streets of Los Angeles.

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice to hear you enjoyed what you saw *g* I'm going to start downloading the new season - I mean, I already downloaded the premiere but stopped because I had SG and SG:A and BSG to download but I'm thinking I need to go back to it because I'm finding myself in one hell of a DZ mood these days *g* Need my fix.

Maybe once I caught up with it, we'll be able to share some views - it's always nice talking about episodes with someone ;-)

Also hey, I friended [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza btw, so you don't need to direct me her LJ anymore, I'm already there - but thanks *g*

I've heard about Wanted on my flist and admit to have been curious about it. I might give it a try one of these days, but first thing first *g*

*is all happy to be able to use her brand new DZ icon for the first time*

[identity profile] aswanargent.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
How many seasons of Dead Zone have there been? The episode that I saw last night was about Johnny having visions of his father, and in some of them the father was in a mental hospital. There was also a girl whose yellow-haired rag doll Johnny found under the floorboards in his father's study, and we learned that his father also had prophetic visions. Do you remember that episode?

I think I'll need some time to get the characters and the storylines sorted out; then maybe we can talk more about the show. :-)

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There's been four seasons. That ie, the one currently airing is the fourth. And I haven't seen the episode you spoke of. I mean, if I'm not mistaken, this is "Babble On" and it's part of S4 so I haven't seen it yet. Though I'm actually downloading at the moment we speak ;-) Sounds interesting *g*

I think I'll need some time to get the characters and the storylines sorted out; then maybe we can talk more about the show. :-)

No worries. I'm the patient type, anyway *g*

[identity profile] whitevanilla.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I've basically missed this entire SG1 season and I don't even feel badly about it. How sad...

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well you know, when a show doesn't do it for us anymore, I don't see why we should keep watching *g*

[identity profile] whitevanilla.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I missed the first two episodes because I was working. So when I finally saw the third one I was so confused as to what was going on, the new people, etc. I don't know. I'm sure I'll catch up next summer or something! I mean, come on, it's SG1! My favorite show for 8 years!

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's already different enough when you actually followed the season from the premiere but yeah, I can imagine how confusing it would be if you suddenly started watching the show after three or four episodes - I mean, we're only five episodes into the season, but you know what I mean :-)

[identity profile] whitevanilla.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, right.

And of course, this Friday I'll be driving toward Colorado, the following Friday in Colorado and then the next Friday, France! Eep!

We must get together sometime. :D

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
This is so weird... thinking you'll be there in no time. I mean, it looks like forever when you announced you were coming here, you know?

And tell me about it!

[identity profile] whitevanilla.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, I know! I can't believe I'll be in France in 2 1/2 weeks. I'm definitely very excited.
ext_14365: If you made this, tell me and I'll credit (Hugs)

[identity profile] fluterbev.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! Thanks honey for your birthday wishes, and for being so lovely! ::huggles you:: And I will definitely try to give my muse some exercise this week :-D

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
You're quite welcome, Bev *g*

And I will definitely try to give my muse some exercise this week

Woohoo! lol

[identity profile] artifuss.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, this is just a tiny detail but how much did I enjoy the Daniel sandwich -
*swoons* Just rewatched the ep, and I totally agree with you there. I have no idea when I became such a multiple pairing perv, rofl. ;)

Also luved how the tables kinda turned for Daniel and Vala. Two eps ago, Vala was telling Daniel that it wasn't his fault for what was going on and now Daniel is the one who has to reassure Vala of the same thing.
*hearts the woobies*
And? Vala is nearly at Daniel's level with animated facial expressions, rofl! *nods*

officially my #1 s9 icon dealer
*blushes* Awwh! Have I mentioned how incredibly wonderful you are to my ego?? lol ;) *hugsya*

My journal is all flocked, though I'm thinking of unlocking it 'cause I'm disliking the supersekritness of it all. It's hard making new friends that way, ya know? But um... those icons can also be found on [livejournal.com profile] stargate_icons. *bg*

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Just rewatched the ep, and I totally agree with you there.

I was wondering, do you think you could do some icons of that Teal'c/Daniel/Cameron scene? Well, you know, of that first Daniel sandwitch scene? Cause talk about a nice visual here *eg*

Vala was telling Daniel that it wasn't his fault for what was going on and now Daniel is the one who has to reassure Vala of the same thing

Hey, you're right - nice! They do make a great team *happy sigh*

And? Vala is nearly at Daniel's level with animated facial expressions, rofl! *nods*

I second that. I just love their facial expressions, they're the best *loves*

Re: the icon thing. You deserve the praise, seriously lol I'm enjoying your s9 iconing a lot *g* Also, you're FO? Oops. I edited the post and linked to the batch you posted over at [livejournal.com profile] stargate_icons, thanks *g*

It's hard making new friends that way, ya know

I know I tend not to friend FO journals - in particular when they're no entry to speak of. But this FO thing is a personal choice so yeah... maybe you could keep it 50-50. Let the fannish posts public and the personal ones FO - for instance?

Anyway, I'm happy to be on it [/selfish]

[identity profile] artifuss.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
*happy sigh*
Joins you with the *happy sigh*s. :D

I was wondering, do you think you could do some icons of that Teal'c/Daniel/Cameron scene?
Heh. *bg* With that scifi logo on the cap, they're a little hard to work around, but this is what I came up with so far:

Image      Image

My brain is obviously taking a short nap (as is my comp since it decided to crash *thwaps it*), so I'm going to try to work them out again later. *shrugs* But if you like either of these, they're yours.
And I'm not sure what your views are on "OT"s, lol. ;) For me, it's just a way of saying I favour a pairing, but if you've got a different view on the matter I could always take that bit out. :)

I know I tend not to friend FO journals -
We probably friended each other before I changed the journal to FO. *shrugs* It's kinda-somewhat a recent thing, lol.

... maybe you could keep it 50-50. Let the fannish posts public and the personal ones FO - for instance?
Yeah, that was one of the options I've been thinking about. Just gotta remember to do it and change the info page. ;)

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohh you're always so fast! And I love the icons - the first one in particular. Thanks a lot!

I do have a question though. You know I'm not a native English speaker, so sometimes I'm a little puzzled at things and for instance... why is it "more sexy in numbers" - if I read correctly, btw - and not "sexier in numbers"? Is it a different meaning, that is a different nuance and all? Or is "sexy" used as a word somehow? Like "more hotness in numbers"? And btw? Sorry for all the questions lol

And I'm not sure what your views are on "OT"s, lol. ;) For me, it's just a way of saying I favour a pairing, but if you've got a different view on the matter I could always take that bit out. :)

I'm like you. When I talk about my OTPs it means the pairings I love best, the ones I'll read first and foremost, the ones I think first - Jim/Blair, Jack/Daniel etc... But now and then, I do enjoy some other combinations - Daniel/Teal'c, Blair/Simon, well you know... so I certainly don't have the slightest problem with a) OT3 and b) this OT3 *eg*

[identity profile] artifuss.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You know I'm not a native English speaker, so sometimes I'm a little puzzled at things and for instance... why is it "more sexy in numbers" - if I read correctly, btw - and not "sexier in numbers"?
LOL! Honestly? It should be "sexier in numbers", but I didn't like how the word "sexier" looked. I don't know... it just looks so wrong, rofl. Then I went for "more hot in numbers", but hot looked like "not" with the font I was using and I was too stubborn to change the font.
*thinks* But I hadn't chosen that font when I was not happy with "sexier", hmmm....
Image

K, how's that? :) (Hmm, can you tell I've had my caffeine today? *snickersmadly*)

Sorry for all the questions lol
Nuh uh, don't be! :)

so I certainly don't have the slightest problem with a) OT3 and b) this OT3 *eg*
*agrees completely* :D

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I do like it better with "sexier", thanks for changing it *kisses*
