First gay marriage in France!
Apr. 23rd, 2004 12:55 pmOMG!
Sometimes watching the news is worth it!
Noël Mamère, mayor of Bègles will conduct a gay marriage in June! The first ever over here. Two men asked him to marry them, and he accepted.
It shouldn't be legally acknowledged because the Code Civil (French law) doesn't recognize same sex marriages yet, but Mr Mamère explained that this wedding will be as valid as any other because the Code Civil doesn't actually downright bans same sex marriages, and he claimed that should said marriage be annulled, he'll go the European Court of Human Right.
Oppositions will come, of course- but at least, someone decided to *do* something.
He'll conduct the marriage under the same conditions and obligation of a straight one. Those two men will be married exactly like any other couples. I'm so... wow, this is so amazing! Things are changing- step by step but they are changing.
France is still behind- but maybe we're moving somewhere. Who knows.
For those who want to read a short article, in French, and because I didn't forget about everyone else, in English.
Also, since it's Sidaction this weekend (AIDS benefit) :

Not that I forget about AIDS the rest of the time, mind you *g*
ETA: Don't think the French version will interest that many people here, but in case, to find the article you now have to scroll down the page. You'll find the title at the bottom.
