castalieI almost started this post with something mundane and unrelated to The Old Guard before I came to the conclusion that there was no point in pretending I'm not still deep in TOG, it's just futile, so let's dive right into it, shall we? ;)
The Old Guard has been watched three times by now. The love hasn't abated yet, hasn't settled yet, and the excitement is currently fueled by the fact that the FP has fallen for it (Rosie was delighted that our fandom "aligned" in such a hardcore way, ie. the four of us falling for the exact same show at the exact same time, and she's right, it doesn't happen that often) so our discussions have been pretty TOG oriented for the past week. I'm now waiting for Jem and Babycakes to join the party in a "one movie to bring them all and in a new fandom bind them" kinda way ;)
We reached the portion of fandom engagement when we're having as many philosophical and existential discussions about the characters and the 'verse as we have about their sex lives lol While GD is researching Catholics sacraments for reasons (of fic), I'm documenting myself on the dialects spoken at the time because, well, why not? Fandom has always been a pretty fun way to learn new things and fans have this uncanny ability to behave like true academics even when they are not by profession, case in point The Old Guard Medieval Immortal Murder Bros: an annotated bibliography thattheladyscribe compiled and shared with us. Definitely one of those "omg, I love fandom and fan people so much" moments that make me fall in love with Fandom all over again.
Back to the language thing, language barrier happens to be a huge kink of mine when it comes to that fandom (actually, language is a kink of mine, period: people who speak several languages make me a bit weak in the knees) and some authors are dealing with the issue in a way that pushes all my buttons ♥
Don't get me wrong, it's not that I want all fic writers to suddenly learn Ligurian, Medieval Genovese, Whatever (I'm not an expert either, definitely not throwing stones, here) and I'm actually quite a fan of the way many of them use italics in their stories to indicate that someone isn't speaking English (I find it super effective without having to speak the language or engage in research #ThumbsUp). Besides, sometimes an author just wants their characters to fall in love in a "simple" setting without having to dwell in long research, I get it. I only wish they at least stopped having Nicolò speak Italian with Yusuf when they meet in 1099. I mean, I'm not the only one with silly pet peeves, am I? Feel free to share yours! lol (Then again, if you think it would stop me from reading and enjoying your fic, think again because it would not!)
