Oz Oz Oz, and uh- oh yeah, Oz *g*
Sep. 26th, 2003 06:44 pmI watched my Oz tapes yesterday. Kinda twice as a matter of fact. I can now officially say that I'm addicted to it. I didn't really remember the atmosphere of the show, only some of the characters, and really, now that I watched several episodes, I can say it was even better than what I thought/remembered. The atmosphere is oppressing, suffocating sometimes. It's not often you follow a show where the characters never ever go outside.
Speaking of the characters. They're scary! They just look so tough, so hard. We're definitely not used to that kind of men - or women, look Shirley or Howell *shudder* - in a show. I really love it! *eg*
Uh, okay, since it's getting rather long, I'm going to spare you *g* Hail to the lj cut.
My First Meeting With Chris:
Like I said, I remembered most of the characters, except Chris of course. It was my very first meeting with him, so to speak. On screen, I mean. Wanna know the first impression? He's one mean bastard! Second opinion? He's one mean bastard! lol He has this attitude - he exudes self-confidence. He's so arrogant, so tough, so arrogant - oh yeah, I already said that. Well, it's true. He just screams alpha male to me. If I thought he was a top before watching the episodes, I'm 100% convinced of it now that I saw him interact with the other inmates and with Toby. I'm not saying he wouldn't ever let himself be "vulnerable" to his lover - cause I guess we saw him like that in - the chilling - "Works of Mercy", but he's a top, period. It's fine with me, as you can imagine *g*
My Little Toby:
Toby was also even better than what I remembered. I love him to death, and his voice? I already heard his voice in SNL, but it's just not the same, and I really really love it *g* Voices are important to me, so I'm pleased when I love his. I must say I love Toby the most when he's vulnerable, but that's the perv in me, so never mind lol I just think he's so sweet. It can sound weird seeing he's in prison, and in regards to some of the stuff he must have done inside, but really, I don't care that he can be ruthless, or that he was crazy or I don't know what else, he's just sweet to me.
See, Terri, there *are other Characters apart from Toby and Chris:
Also, I was glad t see the other characters again. I was right btw, Ryan O'Reily is really great too! His scenes with his brother are among my favorite Ryan scenes, and I love how he's *always* trying to find a new sham. You go, Ryan! Hmm, who else do I like? Oh yeah, Said- talk about a charismatic character! And Poet too, I didn't know him at all, I must say, but he cracks me up. Well, as much as an inmate from Oz can crack me up, I mean *g* And then, there's also Augustus, of course. And Vern? As chilling as I remember him, even more so since I saw "Works of Mercy".
Beecher/Keller:
So far, among the episodes I saw, my favorite is "Works of Mercy" - did you guess? lol - because the Beecher/Keller scenes are just brilliant. Those two are already bloody great in fics, but in canon - they're just so much better! Well, they're the real thing, know what I mean? *g* I just can't get enough of those two *glassy eyes*
Actually, the episodes I now have on tape *blows kisses to
alinewrites* are really interesting causes I have episodes when they're together and some others when they're er, definitely not together anymore - talk about an understatement. But those ones? They're so good too! Jealous!Chris is a sight to behold. Toby as well, btw, in case you were wondering *g* Also, I love territorial!Chris or protective!Chris. No surprise, here, granted. They're both hurting, they're hurting each other - but to me, it's so obvious they still belong together *sigh*
Oz, or A New Version of a Twisted Boarding School:
There's also something interesting in that show. It's how the characters live and interact in a totally closed environment and the consequences of it. I just never really thought about it, but when I watched, I thought it was weird how much the inmates actually looked like kids, and to be more precise, like school boys. I'm not kidding. They look like school boys - like a twisted and trash version of a boarding school since they all live in the same place without leaving it.
See, you have the quiet kids who are sometimes bullied by the bigger and tougher ones. Then there're the smart ass who's always really proud of the jokes or pranks he's pulling, and the big kids who think they're bosses. Then you have the 'teachers' who are always there to control and watch over their turbulent kids, who are there to eventually help the weaker ones. They also punish the most disobedient of said kids. They're also there to prevent any fight, and since they can't really do that, they're here to break said fights, like in a playground.
There's a sort of sense of paternalism in the whole thing. The inmates are like children - they're dependent on the hacks and the prison staff, they're subjected to a strict discipline. They can't sleep when they want to, they have to wake up when they're told, to eat when they're told to. They're also subjected to punishment if they don't obey the rules or respect the authorities. You can say they don't really work like an adult does, and even when they do, it can't be compared anyway. They have different activities to keep them occupied, otherwise they're impossible to live with, they get excited very quickly and it's damn difficult to calm them down afterward.
There's also the way Glynn of any other members of the staff, the hacks included talk to them. It's always stern and tough - well, duh - but it just sounds like a parent scolding a recalcitrant kid, sometimes. Or a stern parent warning their children about the consequences should they disobey the orders they'd just been given.
No, really, it feels like a very twisted version of a school with over - violent and undisciplined and over-dangerous school boys.

Since you were talking about the actor as opposed to a particular character, do you realize how much RPSy what you said sounded? lol

Date: 2003-09-27 09:44 am (UTC)It just tells the story of the guys inside: the power struggles, the fight to keep their sanity, the relationship between the convicts, the way they're dealing with this life, the way they're dealing with their own crimes, it also shows the relationship between them and the people working for the prison- the hacks, the director, the priests, the shrinks etc, and of course the relationship the inmates can have with their families.
It talks about a world of politics since a prison is deeply linked to political life. It's always funny to see the 'political' moves from the inmates but also from the staff, like the Warden for instance, who'd like to become Senator or something. It also shows the difficulties of the people working there, the ones who're trying to make the best out of it, to treat the convicts like human beings, and the other ones who sometimes seem as rotten as the convicts themselves.
It just goes deep inside the men's minds. Like a dig inside the human psyche's but only to discover the worst, you know? It involves around this idea, in a way.
Well, to make a long story, it just kinda tells the story of everything that can happen inside and outside the prison. A sort of analysis of life in closed and violent environment *g* It's just rough and violent, but boy is it good! *eg*

Date: 2003-09-28 03:23 am (UTC)How would we do, then? You know, showing our displeasure on mails is easy, but how to do it on LJ? I would say stop commenting, but that would punish me as well... Or would the flame just be fandom and show related? Like, I would insult your fandoms, and you would reply, and then I would create mean het pairings, or even write some drabbles with Remus or Sirius being fucked by Derek? What do you think? Or would it be way too gross and way too cruel?

Date: 2003-09-26 10:17 am (UTC)Yeah, you know, you made me want to watch the ep. again -send them back! LOL, no really, it's so great the way Chris and Toby are -or are not- together, it's something I couldn't find in any other fandom because it's the only one that pictures such a relation ship between men without any... I don't know. Sans artifice? They're so tough, so mean, and soooo in love! And they're pretty sexy, too. Yes. There's no show like Oz. You don't have to "imagine", it's here, just in front of you, the way Chris looks at Toby, touches him, hurts him -kisses him-
And yes, yes, yes, Chris is one mean bastard, but we love him that way (in "medium rare", mmmhhh) and Toby's so sweet, no matter how bad he can be!
Ok, Ok, I'll stop here. I could go on for hours.
And what you wrote about school boys? I just imagined Toby having this kind of thought on his LJ, how prison turned them into irresponsible schoolboys.
So glad you liked it!

Date: 2003-09-26 11:03 am (UTC)Man, I can't tell you how much I like the tapes! I'm actually going to watch them again tonight, I'm addicted, oh yeah!
What you said about Toby and Chris, about them being so tough and everything, yeah, that's also an explanation why I like it so much. They're hard, they're tough, they just look so 'true', you know? And yeah, their love is just so passionate and so rough... it's pretty incredible! I bloody love it!!
About the schoolboys stuff- yes, I also think that it's something that Toby would be bound to feel at one point.
Btw, since I'm here. I saw that you posted two entries just a few minutes ago, and I was wondering whether you didn't forget to switch back to your Aline account after writing the Toby entry. I mean, look at the last entries at this account, it sounds like 'your' entry instead of his. If I'm mistaken, just forget I was there! lol

Date: 2003-09-26 12:20 pm (UTC)So I see, lovely write up in the distinctive mouse style ;)
I'm so glad that you're enjoying the show so much, I love hearing you talk about them. Which is just as well, as we both tend to get a bit obsessive with our fandoms ;)

Well, thanks. Glad you liked it. And I like the sound of that! 'Distinctive Mouse style', uh? Yeah, definitely has a nice ring to it lol
Oh yeah, I'm fucking enjoying the show! It's even better than what I thought, it's just brilliant *g* I would so love for the DVDs to be released in France. I mean, it's a pity we don't share the same zone with the US. I'm not complaining with Zone2 though, cos we share it with Japan, and I'm in anime heaven most of the time, but it would have been nice if I could watch some US DVDs.
And yeah, I guess we do have a tendency to get a bit obsessive with our fandoms! lol

Date: 2003-09-27 01:27 pm (UTC)You have got a distinctive mouse style. Give you a fandom and you'll soon know who's top and bottom. AHA! That's the real reason you keep out of popslash isn't it? They're all switch hitters, no real tops and bottoms ;) Well, except in my eyes *eg*
About the DVD zones. Can't you find a hack for your player? I found a hack where you put a code in the handset for mine and now I can play any region of DVD. It means I can play the ones Jenny sends.
But even if you can't region 2 is a good one, I get MX DVD's from Japan on that region, and that's cool!

Date: 2003-09-28 03:21 am (UTC)Yeah, hail to Region2 and to Japan *g*
