Do you sometimes ponder about the differences from one fandom to another? I mean, usually, I don't really care, I read my fandoms, and in essence they're quite similar. I find the same kind of stories, just written differently of course - I eventually find the same intensity from TS to SG or XF for instance. Sure, I find more BDSM stories in XF - or I used to - and I wish they were more dark stories in SG, but overall, the hard core slasher in me is always satisfied by what I find in those main fandoms of mine.
And that's why I'm always surprised when I try the DS fandom again. Yesterday, I was recced a very nice archive - hey, there were Fraser and Torture in the title! - and after spending my night reading DS fics from said archive, I came to the realization that this fandom is really too tame for me.
Well, it wasn't that big of a revelation, I mean, I knew it already, but it just confirmed what I thought. I'm not saying the stories I read were bad, don't get me wrong, they were nice, well written, sure, and I'm not saying there is no dark stories in that fandom, of course not - but overall even the darkest of them were just... sorta tame to me. I really wonder where it comes from, this feeling. I mean, those stories are supposed to be dark, you know? And I didn't feel it. I saved lots of them, and only ended up with keeping a few, because even though they were good, well, they weren't what I look for in a dark or intense story. I think I've been totally spoiled with TS, XF or SG.
Still, I thank
ckr and
duesouthficrecs for pointing those stories *g*
Now, since I'm on the subject of stories I read yesterday night, the fics I found at the Library of Moria so didn't disappoint me! *schnuzzles fics*
They were really great. And I'm definitely in love with Aragorn/Faramir and Boromir/Faramir. I think I'm going to hunt those pairings from now on *g* Aragorn/Legolas is still great, but that I already knew, so it wasn't a surprise *g*
Also, my new partner in crime
stalecorruption gave me a link to a BDSM LoTR archive, so see me smile - or see me smirk *eg*
Can you tell that I had a great reading night yesterday - and that there's a good chance I'm going to do it again tonight? *g*

Date: 2003-12-22 12:49 pm (UTC)I think, in a way, XF set the tone... I mean, I found all my kinks, all my button pushers through XF. Dark stories rock my world. Sure, I love reading nice or sappy stories, I enjoy them, but to me, the darker the better. So, XF was just perfect.
TS is nice as well, because we can find lots of dark stories, and I find enough BDSM stories to please the little pervie in me.
Now, for SG... well, that always intrigues me. I mean, seeing the possibilities, I never really understood why they were never more dark stories. We do find some of them, sure, I have them safely and lovely stored on disks, but I always thought that we didn't find *enough* of them, considering the possibilities. Maybe that's why I'm so proud of my very first SG fic- it was considered as one of the dark stories in the fandom. Me really proud *g* It's not the darkest, maybe, but still, it was considered as one of the good ones, so *shrug*
Well, apparently, I could go on forever about this subject too! lol

Date: 2003-12-22 11:41 am (UTC)That's my problem. After being in Oz fandom, most of the other fandoms look a bit too smooth and tame to me. In Oz, even happy stories have a little harshness. I don't find this in any other fandom; except X-files maybe.

Date: 2003-12-22 02:04 pm (UTC)Shall I mention the latest? Of course I will. Popslash is *really* tame compared to media fandom. There are exceptions but most stories are mild angst opposed to the dark stuff that I usually love. Man, I find a darkfic in this fandom and feel like my birthday and Christmas has come at once!
Nice question!

Date: 2003-12-22 03:06 pm (UTC)Yeah, STV has some pretty dark stories, and sometimes I put it right beside XF, but in thoses cases, it means I have Morticia's stories in mind. It's true that I love dark stories in STV, they don't disappoint!
Poor sis, victim of such a tame fandom *g* I guess sparkling boys can't be raped/tortured/abused like the rest? Too bad. Although, it sure makes you love the few dark fics you can find even more, that's true *g* I remember the rape fic you'd recced, and I also remember a kinky site that was pretty good, anyway- so there's still hope, right? *eg*

Date: 2003-12-23 06:10 am (UTC)Well they can, but it's just not the usual thing in the fandom. Which fits in with your point about the differences so well *g*
And yeah, there's always hope. I mean I write them don't I ;)

Date: 2003-12-23 10:20 am (UTC)It's funny you say that because I've been thinking about a bunny today, not really dark as such, but heavy kink if I can manage it. Just don't tell anyone because I'd be lynched as I promised other stories ;)
Talking of which *g* No hurry to read The End, I won't be writing it until New Year now. Plus SANTA'S COMING tomorrow! Did you know that? *g*
You have to celebrate, especially as you do it tomorrow, not read my stuff.
