Foray into Battlestar Galactica
Mar. 10th, 2005 07:08 pmYes. A post full of a new show. I? Need an 'I'm a TV series Whore' icon, I'm just sayin. [ETA: Hey, what do you think of that one? lol]
So. I'm having a Wonderful Mail Day every day it seems *beams* Today's parcel was from the lovely
greedy_dancer and had the first five episodes of BSG on beautiful and shiny CDs, whee! Thank you Lovely A. *kisses* I was quite curious to watch the series for myself and finally know what the fuss was about and eventually see if I would succumb to that new version. I mean, I remember sulking when I heard of the change they did in a typical omg-they-turned-Starbuck-into-a-woman-and-ruined-a-classic-argh-blasphemy-I-hate-them knee-jerk reaction as I'm wont to do, but it stopped there because hey, you can't dislike something just on principle, you know? I mean, no you can, but it's unfair and so very stupid. Definitely not the kind of thing I would do myself *cough* The original BSG is still, you know, my First Love, because how could it not, but I'll admit that this new series? Or what I saw of it - ie "33" and "Water" -- rocks like a rocking thing.
Cause yeah, I might have had time to watch those two episodes only so far, but "33" was definitely enough to have ole little me hooked because the intensity of it! So yes, even changing a classic can bring goodies *g*
I wouldn't say no the mini-series/two hour movie coming before the pilot though, cause at first I didn't understand what the hell this 'Previously on BSG' was doing at the beginning of the pilot, but yeah, okay it makes sense if something was coming before S1.
The characters are all pretty awesome - and the female characters? Kick so much ass, it's a pleasure. I don't know what is the consensus on Roslin but I quite love her - mind, I'm just two episodes into the season, but right now I find her to be a great character. Hopefully the next episodes will please me like those two ones did, and I'll have a new series to add to mynever ending & always growing collection *bounce*
It was also quite fun to see all those actors popping up because it was like playing a huge game of When Shows Collide aka Will You Recognise Me? --> 'Hey, the president is Stands With a Fist and wait! Isn't Adama.. yeah, that's Lt Castillo, and hey Boomer? Didn't she play in SG! Ohh look at that, officer Dualla played in Dark Angel too, and let's not forget Dr Baltar who was one of Bridget Jone's best friends'. And I guess Horatio Hornblower fans were ecstatic too, but since this series is more like a urban legend to me than anything - ie I hear people talking about it all the time but never got to actually see the show or even a preview - I didn't realise who Apollo was before I finally checked at tv tome.
And then while watching the opening theme of "Water", I was reminded that CKR guest starred in BSG and wow, this guy is everywhere, isn't he? Amtrying to download downloading "Flesh and Bone" atm but huh *peeks at file* if I'm to believe what I'm seeing, time is going backwards now - sad fact of download life that one is *sigh*
Now on an unrelated note, I need to think of following
audrarose and
ainm's lead and write my own Slash First Time, ie the first time I encountered slash, you perv lol Not that I never rambled about it before, mind, but some things bears repeating. Then again, I may be distracted by new shiny things and forget about it, so you might be spared *eg*
ETA: My players weren't the problem so after downloading the right codecs... I can now read Desperate Housewives, yay! Tonight's program? The BSG I have on the Shiny CDs + Flesh and Bone, which suddenly downloaded so fast I didn't even notice + Desperate Housewives - whee!

Date: 2005-03-10 09:53 pm (UTC)Btw? Did you have your bday sometime this week? I don't think it's included on your info page and I'm wondering...

Date: 2005-03-10 10:10 pm (UTC)The stuff that goes on later on in Battlestar is so good, I just want to lie down and wail from the goodness. I was pretty meh about Apollo to start with, but by the end of the season, he became my God.

Date: 2005-03-10 10:19 pm (UTC)As it happens, I got interested in Apollo, and right from the start, which surprised me because I usually don't go for his kind of character, but there was something about him that won me over *g* I'm glad to hear it should get only better as episodes go *g*

Date: 2005-03-10 10:27 pm (UTC)Um.. we were saying something about.. ah yes. Apollo. Great guy. And stuff.
I was surprised to find myself interested in slashing him with his dad. Oh, the angst!

Date: 2005-03-10 10:37 pm (UTC)How much I love you, let me count the ways lol There's not a lot of people on the flist I can talk to about incest --not that I mind, I know it's such a delicate thing, I certainly wouldn't dream of offending anyone-- but still, it's pretty cool to talk about that kind of stuff with someone lol Slashing the two, hmm? Oh yeah, nice angst alright! So... did someone write something like that?

Date: 2005-03-10 11:08 pm (UTC)I don't know whether anyone's written Adama/Apollo yet. I've tried looking around at the comms but I haven't seen anything like that, and I really don't know where to begin looking. There's one fic comm as far as I know, bsg2003fics, but it's not exclusively slash and there's a lot of wading through involved. The fandom seems a bit scattered, but again, I don't know for sure.
Apollo has a lot of dignity, but I can so see him wanting to do anything to please his father. Anything. Like, getting on his knees and sliding his tongue out. *twitches*

Date: 2005-03-10 11:17 pm (UTC)Yeah okay, I turned into begging!slave girl in like two seconds flat, well what can I say, it's ingrained in me so you know, please pretty please? *pleading look*

Date: 2005-03-10 11:26 pm (UTC)I've been meaning to do a ficlet! There was a scene in a later episode that made me climax and keel over from the slash, and called my sis on the phone (she had seen all the episodes before me), and she smirked so hard I could feel it over the phone.
This was I think in December, so I definitely need to write that ficlet. lol. Slash is a drug.

Date: 2005-03-11 12:04 am (UTC)You thought of writing said ficlet back in December? Boy, you so need to do it JOW. Don't you want to reach completion? *snicker*

Date: 2005-03-10 09:20 pm (UTC)But now you say that this new series is good and has lots of great actors from other shows (you never saw Horatio???? blasphemy! says she who only has one dvd with two eps on it) and now I feel I have to get this after all. *sigh* Enough is enough, they say, but hey, can we ever really have enough?
Will have to start looking out it seems :P

Date: 2005-03-10 09:47 pm (UTC)And HEY! In the third episode of BSG 2003, Richard Hatch is a guest star! And I happen to have that episode, so... just let me know if you want it, alright? Or if you want to start at the beginning, we could work it out too *g* Of course, you may have the opportunity to watch the show live? Well, anyway, I make the offer, if you need it, you know where to ask *g*
And no, sadly I never watched Horatio. To my defense I'll say that it never aired here and, okay I never really thought of seeking it out lol But should they air the series, I'd certainly give it a try *g*

Date: 2005-03-10 11:55 pm (UTC)However, I'm not one to talk. BSG was on here for ages and I didn't watch for the reasons you said.

Date: 2005-03-11 12:06 am (UTC)Seriously, I'm quite impressed with the changes they made. It's lik a new show - as long as noone forgets BSG 1978 was there first, I'll be all right *g*

Date: 2005-03-11 02:24 am (UTC)I think you're really gonna like BSG. I watch every week, but it's a little dark for me. But that's your glory, isn't it?
Roslin rocks, I agree with you. I pretty much love her. The only one I'm not happy with on the casting is Apollo. Yeah, he was all cute and slashy and tragic in HH, but he's a touch whiny in this - what did you think?
Glad you're watching it, though. :)

Date: 2005-03-11 09:45 am (UTC)Dark is definitely right in my alley lol Which is why I have the feeling I officially found myself a new show. Again *sigh*
Actually --bear in mind I only watched two episodes, The Esu spent the night last night and I had to cancel my 'program' *g*-- I quite like Apollo so far. I thought I would get another of those Sooper Heroes in action and I'm afraid I was ready to dislike him on sight but no, he surprised me. What surprised me is that he almost sounded more... sensitive, though that's not really the word I want, in a way than Starbuck. I'm just referring to the scene in 33 when she dresses him down about his behaviour and how he's not acting as the captain but as the good friend... of course at the time, Starbuck was having a mini breakdown of her own, but that scene struck me as funny, because usually it would be the other way around. The guy telling the girl to act tough and stop thinking with her heart - I also loved how in Water, Apollo goes back to saying 'Good Hunting' like he was told *g*
Then, when Apollo had to take the decision to shoot the Olympic carrier and had to bear the consequences afterwards, I thought he was really... doing angst well. Not whiny so far, just really concerned and guilty. Now... this could change too, mind. After all, I remember loving Kate in the very first episodes of Lost and look at me now, she bores me to death and even annoys me a bit *cough*
And did you see the mini before the pilot? Who is this Helo guy? And is it his name, anyway?
no subject
Date: 2005-03-11 01:26 pm (UTC)Okay - re Helo (that's his name, or his call sign anyway). He was Boomer's co-pilot, and when they landed on Caprica during the attack there was this harrowing scene with frantic refugees trying to get on board their small ship. Of course there isn't room for everyone, so Boomer and Helo have to do this whole lifeboat/lottery choose-who-lives-or-dies thing. They take the kids, some of the people, and then right at the end, Helo sees that Baltar guy in the crowd. Since he's a famous scientist who presumably will be needed in the survival of humankind, Helo gives up his seat for Baltar. Boomer cries, we cry, especially since we know that Baltar is the CAUSE of this whole debacle anyway. The refugees rush the ship, and Helo has to hold them off with a gun so they don't drag the ship down. It was a poignant, heartbreaking scene. Kind of like the entire mini.
Did I mention that it's dark? :)
Hope that helps.

Date: 2005-03-11 04:16 pm (UTC)And damn, that scene had to be heartwrenching *wince* They did set the tone for the series right from the start, didn't they?

Date: 2005-03-11 06:08 am (UTC)BLASHPHEMY. HOW COULD THEY?!?!?1?!?!?!

Date: 2005-03-13 01:16 am (UTC)I came here totally by chance, and am glad to discover a TV show addict like myself ! Well, to be honnest, I thing you've got more of an addiction than I do, but still.
Anyway, a friend of mine recommended BSG to me, and burned for me a DVD containing the TV movie I couldn't find anywhere. It was so helpful, especially since I've never watched a sigle episode of the original version, shame on me.
Do you live in Paris ? If you do, I'll burn a CD for you and we can meet, if you want. We don't know each other but I so loved BSG that I'm eager to share (might sound childish, sorry about that).
If you want to chat, I'm catiadoodle7 on yahoo messenger. :) (don't hope to find anything interesting about me on my LJ, I hardly ever update but lurk a lot)

You've never watched a single episode of the original version? *gasp* But okay, my own best friend came out as a BSG 100%-virgin too, so I guess I can forgive you as well lol
I live in the suburb and wouldn't say no to the mini like I said, thank you, that's very nice of you *g* With my schedule though, I think we'll have to make do with some chats on Y!M --when I care to log in lol-- before meeting in the flesh, but it would be nice talking to not only another fan of BSG, not only a French fan but a Parisian too *g*
