I mean, you would think it would be Dean dragging him along all the time - like he did in the pilot - but here it was the other way around, and it's not the first time either.

I think that's due to a difference in their personalities. Dean is much more laid back and casual. He approaches hunting like you or I would approach our normal, mundane day jobs. He doesn't get excited or intense over it until he's actually engaged in the hunt. Whereas Sam is much more earnest and takes things more seriously. He comes off as more focused.

And this time we were seeing the issues on Sam's side. So he feels as if their dad is disappointed in him, uh?

Sam's issues kind of annoyed me for some reason. For one thing, that guy from the airplane episode already told Sam that daddy!Winchester was proud of him and couldn't stop talking about his smart kid going to Stanford -- which Dean confirmed. So Sam should already know that his dad was still proud of him. It bugs me that he was so stuck being bitter that he apparently already forgot all about that and was intent on believing his dad didn't like him.

Cue to nice little discussions between the two guys - and then we're back to Dean defending their dad and seriously, I absolutely love the daddy!Winchester-Dean relationship.

Me too! I love seeing how devoted Dean is to him. How loyal and how much he loves him and believes in him. And I think that makes sense. Dean knew daddy!Winchester before Mary was killed, so he remembers what an awesome dad he was, and how grief-stricken he must have been afterward. Dean saw Mary killed, had that perfect life ripped away from him, so he obviously is the one who can most understand why daddy!Winchester is the way he is. I'm sure he agrees with him, because he feels the same way. That's part of why he's not upset about his lifestyle the same way Sam is. It's not something that was forced on him. It's something he WANTS, because he's still hurting and still out for vengeance. We've seen that. Which... more on that later.

And btw, what was that obsession about the whole lie v truth thing? Dude, how many times did they mention that theme?

I think it was supposed to further illustrate the difference between Sam and Dean. Sam's the one who wants to be normal, and he's the honest one. Dean's the one who can't handle normality, and he's the one who lies and manipulates and hustles pool.

Still, it really annoys me that the Native American dude got on Dean's case. Sure, he was the one who actually voiced the lie, but Sam was going along with it. It was as much Sam's lie as Dean's, because it's not like Sam was going to tell him who they really were, you know? It was stupid, and I didn't really like the distinction that was made there, because Sam lies plenty.

I mean, was Dean predisposed to not want a normal life or was he more like Sam - and if he was, he lost something precious en route and how did he lose it exactly?

Okay, continuing my thought from above. Sam never knew their mother. He's not consumed with the need to figure out what happened to her, and to avenge her death the way Dean and daddy!Winchester are, simply because he was only a baby and wasn't there to experience the grief. He doesn't have the same motivation or drive as Dean, so he naturally wanted to be normal. But Dean DID know his mother, DID see her die, DID miss her and have to deal with the grief. So it was only natural for Dean to take up the hunting, and he probably clung to that as a way to deal, just like his dad did. So he CAN'T be normal -- he's too consumed and too invested. He's devoted his whole life to it the way Sam never did, so it's not like he can just give it up the way Sam did.

... I'm going to have to ramble more about this in my own journal. XD I have SO many thoughts about it.
