Fic Musing
Feb. 20th, 2006 11:43 amDude! Remember the
numb3rs_awards I mentioned the other day? Well two of my stories have been nominated, whee! I mean, does it change anything in the grand or even small scheme of things? Absolutely not. Does it please me anyway? Yes. And yes, the fandom is small enough that two of my stories would pop up but, seriously, this is sweet :-)
Also, the new challenge over at
numb3rsflashfic is to write a fic after one of Steve Walker paintings and I can only hope my muses will cooperate because I remember how much fun it was the last time we did it in TS; I can imagine how great it could be to use those gorgeous paintings for Don and Charlie. Also, man, I so wish I could have one of those paintings! Just a little note card or a post card, you know? I'm not sure we can buy them if we live oversea though; I'll have to check out the site more carefully because, wow, they're so beautiful and sensual and sweet and tender and - well, you get the picture :-) There's a sort of quiet beauty and strength to those paintings that I adore.
Speaking of challenges, if you're even mildly interested in Jim/Blair but you're not a member of
sentinel_thurs, I'd advise you to go and check the latest stories posted for the Five Ways challenge because dude, they're awesome! They always are, mind you, but sometimes a challenge will stand out, you know? And that's one of them. Also note that at least two of those stories should come with a health warning, they're that hot *nods*
Finally,
starwatcher307 told us about her writing habits yesterday and it made me think of mine because I'm that self-centred.
So me, I never have the whole story plotted out from the word go. Mind you, my stories are usually between 2000 and 5000 words so it's not that hard not to have the whole plot already decided from the start. But I never write outlines or anything. Usually, I'll have a picture popping in and that's where the story will come from. The picture is usually quite detailed and when I start writing my story, I just need to write down the picture as it was - then, as I write it down, the rest of the picture appears, dialogues can be heard, and the story comes to life. Also, I'll usually write the story from start to finish. I mean, I'll start with the first line, I'll go to the middle and I'll stop at the end. Again, with stories as short as mine, it might not be so difficult.
Now, sometimes the picture will be the last one or a middle one: like for instance my Breaking Point: Silence fic? Started because of the sequel. I know, the sequel I haven't finished in *cough*forever*cough*, but okay I had this scene - as it turns out it is actually the very first scene of BP2 - it was clear as day and so very detailed in my head. But instead of writing that one, I suddenly realised I wanted to write the whole story behind that first scene, ie write the story that resulted in that scene, I needed to tell the story that came before... and Breaking Point: Silence was born.
For Exorcism [SPN] I had the picture of Dean pinned to his car fucked by Sam... not exactly the worst picture to start writing a fic with, don't you think? lol For Yes, Sir [SPN] I had the picture of the motel room in the dark where Dean was sleeping on one bed and his father on the other, for A Different World [Numb3rs] it was the image of smallboy!Charlie sitting on the porch looking at his brother playing with two other boys, etc etc...
Sure, I guess the idea for the story is already there, like, "I want an angry!Sam fucking Dean" kinda story or a "I want a story where Dean thinks of Sam in college" one or "I want to tell the story of Don and Charlie through the years" but it's the image itself that really starts it all - as soon as the image appears, I'll be able to tell the story behind it. The idea doesn't create the image per se.
Except when it does, of course. My Precious Illusions fic [TS] was born after
Babycakes made me listen to a song by Alanis Morissette, namely Precious Illusions - yes, I so win at titles that I actually take them from the actual songs that inspired me *rolls eyes* I just knew this song told the story of Blair and that Jim would be the one to tell that story. That's where it comes from.
Now sometimes it's a bit of both. For my Night series [TS] for instance, the story was born because I wanted to write a 'dark' story - or, say, a story with darker tones. I didn't try to force it or anything, but in the back of my mind, I had this want, you know? Because of this, I think my subconscious was trying to grab the first image that would fit my self!challenge and it did create something that I loved from the start - seriously, how could I resist hooker!Blair, right? In particular since it wasn't a Jim-saves-him-from-prostitution like we usually read. So I was pretty happy with what the muses brought me *nods*
As it happens, the scene that was created isn't one I turned into a story. Still, the pic was quite detailed and told me everything I needed to know about this universe: it had Jim and Blair with Simon - he was still a cop though - Blair was being his provocative self - well, he was being the Blair I'd write in my series that is - Jim was being his cold self but even then, it was clear what the dynamic was about and technically, even in that scene Blair was the colder of the two, the more damaged. In the end, the first story I posted in that series doesn't have anything to do with that first scene but whatever, that's where the whole series come from, so it does fit the bill :-)
So anyway, that's how I write my stories. Now, I could also tell you how I choose my titles - but man, finding the title is actually the difficult part of the whole fic writing process as far as I'm concerned so I'm not sure I'm ready for that lol

It's been very interesting to read other writers' habits. I'm not a very disciplined writer; but what I do seems to work for me, so...

I don't believe in discipline as far as writing goes, I'll tell you that much, so your method is just as good as any. Also, seeing how good the fics you write turn out to be, I'd say it's the perfect writing method lol
Hey too *hugs back*

Date: 2006-02-21 12:50 pm (UTC)Congratulations on your nominations! I can't believe I didn't say that in my first comment! Of course, they're in that other obsessively-hearted fandom of yours, but still, how cool for you! ::hugs my little over-acheiver::
And...you're sweet. Thank you.
