Little trip down TS memory lane.
Mar. 20th, 2006 12:43 pmSo today is a big event in my beloved TS fandom since it's its Tenth Anniversary. Dude, I was sixteen when it aired for the first time? Takes me back *nods* I often remember the first time I've watched a show that turned out to be one of my addictions but as it happens, I don't remember watching my first episode of TS. I remember liking it enough that on the days I would come back from school before 6.30 pm I would sprawl on the couch and watch it but it wasn't a Big Thing yet.
Still, I do remember watching the first part of SenToo and being kinda very traumatised because OMG they hadn't just killed my favourite guy, right? They hadn't! I was quite worried because a) at the time I didn't have internet - didn't have a computer actually - so I had no idea that I could even search for an episode guide and stuff and b) they had aired the HL episode where Richie dies for real a couple of days before and er, I was still traumatised by that too. Not that I ever cared for Richie that much per se, but if they could kill Richie, then they could kill just about everyone, everyone meaning Methos, and I wasn't exactly comfortable with that, kthxbai.
So anyway, I liked TS but I wasn't a Huge Fan yet. That came years later. And actually, I went back to the show after I fell in love with the fandom. And dude, I just love that story. So by the time I discovered the fandom, I was already a slasher, that much is clear. I didn't have my lj at the time - didn't even know livejournal existed period - and I just spent my time on-line reading fics and, well, I don't remember what I did on-line pre-LJ. It's a mystery to me.
But anyway, I read fics and sometimes crossovers and, see, this is where it's funny because I got interested in The Sentinel via a Due South/The Sentinel crossover. The reason why it won't ever stop being funny is that I don't read DS. Except for the couple of times when I do, mind, and this was apparently one of those times. That fic was Valse à Deux Temps by Laura Jacquez Valentine. I didn't read it at 852 Prospect though - I didn't know of that archive. Yet :-)
So I read that fic and got really interested in those two guys, Jim and Blair. Interested enough that I searched for fanfic with them and that is when I found 852 Prospect. DUDE! I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! An archive. With a search engine. Sorted out by pairings, kinks and everything a fangirl could dream of! I tried J/B and remember getting more than 2.000 results. That was... mind-blowing. I started reading and got hooked. It was as simple as that.
At the time, I already knew
Terri and, as I'm wont to do, I mentioned to her that fandom I'd just found. I also recc'ed stories her way... and one of the first - if not the first - fic I read and shared with her was No Islands Anymore by Betsy Tacy Ray-Kelly - and because our motto was already The Darker The Better back then, we kinda fell in love and wanted more *cough*
Dude, I remember us looking for pics and looking for quotes and talking about TS in all our mails and though Blair was my favourite, I started to develop a real liking to this Jim guy who seemed to have such a great sense of humour. I remember us trading quotes and his lines always cracked me up!
As a result, I really wanted to see them live again and was quite sad that M6 wasn't airing the show at the time. That's when miracle of miracle, there was a repeat of the show in the UK and Terri, sweetheart that she is, taped the episodes for me and sent them my way and bam, I fell in love with the show itself, for good this time :-)
Terri and I kept the obsession going for a long time just between the two of us... then lj happened and slowly, oh so slowly, TS started to emerge here. But I still remember whingeing because I had, like, one TS fan on my flist, namely Terri, and that was just wrong! There was no TS comm either - or maybe one, I think - and this, too, was awfully sad and wrong.
Things certainly have changed since then, haven't they? *beams*
So anyway, that's how I went from liking the show to loving it. Via fandom :-)
You can guess what I'll do tonight, can't you? Read all the fics that have been posted over at the Sentinel 10th Anniversary Site, of course, and have fun with all the goodies the site has to offer. It also makes me smile because I can't help but think of the lovely
starwatcher307 whose bday is today - Happy Birthday again, mate! - and who could see all those goodies as presents and all. Nice lol
Unrelated now, look at what Ashley Pharoah - one of the co-creators and co-writers of Life on Mars - has to say about series 2:
Q: Can you give us any hints at what might happen to Sam and the Gene Genie in series two of Life on Mars?
A: If I knew I would! We're only just starting the writing period now. Suffice to say there will be lots of homo-erotic bonding in grim Manchester pubs.
Ha! See? It's not just us slashers talking, man!

Good old pre-spoiler times.

(You'll soon probably be the one personally responsible for my newest obsession).
On TS specifically, can I find the eps anywhere? I must have been about 10 when it first aired over here, and as far as I remember they didn't even show all episodes. I read
I am seriously in love with that woman.

Date: 2006-03-21 02:05 pm (UTC)Shortly after that I found your LJ, and I guess you can remember me whining about not being able to see it bach then *grins*.
I kinda do :-)
(You'll soon probably be the one personally responsible for my newest obsession)
Yeah, I get that a lot lol
On TS specifically, can I find the eps anywhere?
Well, not really. The DVDs are coming out soon, ie s1 box set is being released next month but apart from that, you'd need to rely on other fans. And like, hi! I'm one of those other fans lol I'm a bit short in blank DVDs but if you're willing to wait, I could burn the episodes for you.
