First things first: a Happy Birthday to both
wistful_fever and
stone_princess *hugs*
So how was your Saturday, flist? Mine was cool and relaxing. I didn't go to the GLBT meeting, btw. Thing is, my cousin Rémi came over and between an afternoon spent with a bunch of strangers - minus Manu, obviously - and an afternoon with my cous', the choice was easy so I stayed with him. We chilled and kicked back and it was lovely.
Then I watched Numb3rs, which is always of the good, of course :-)
Okay so. I liked the episode. But I have to admit some things felt a little... odd, shall we say.
Like for instance, I wish Don had showed a little more of his concern for Charlie. I mean, he's usually a little more Charlie-aware and - okay it's not as if he acted as if nothing was wrong with him, but I wish he'd done something. I wasn't even asking for a lot - fanfic gives me that - but just a little something?
Actually, Don seemed almost absent during that episode - almost as if he was in the background somehow. It did give more room for Team action and interaction though, which isn't a bad thing in and of itself, granted.
[ETA: DUDE, I forgot something! I thought worried!Don would have been great and all but how could I forget protective!Don in action during the shooting? Because that, I definitely liked. Oh yeah!]
Something else that felt odd to me was Alan's reaction - or lack thereof - after the shooting. I mean, he didn't seem the least upset at Don and Charlie being actually shot at when he was completely freaking out at the mere thought of Charlie being potentially in danger of being targeted by the sniper in "Sniper Zero".
And okay we're given an explanation; he didn't think Charlie wanted to talk about what happened, he's relieved and he did freak out - we can also suppose that the 'upset, angry' part of his speech actually reflected his own feelings when he learnt of the shooting and it's like everything works as a whole... only in Alan context, it doesn't. It didn't seem Alan-like, if it makes sense.
Okay for me, he should have seriously freaked out - on several levels, too. Because of the shooting itself of course - it would be more than enough - but also because of the place where it happened. Like, the FBI office is supposed to be a safe place; it's where Don and Charlie should be safe, where Alan can imagine them working without being in immediate danger of being used at targets. Sure, it's not true - case in point - but whatever, I think it still sounds logical.
Like when you think nothing can happen in your own house; intellectually you know bad things can happen here but emotionally it's a difficult concept to grasp. And I can imagine Alan thinking that way about the office. Except this time, this safety was, literally, shot to hell and... nothing? I can't buy it. I'm usually one of the first to say that the only persons who have the right to say a characterisation is off are the writers themselves because they're the ones who know the characters inside out but, this time, I thought it was wrong...
Unless the intention of the scene was for Alan to appear calm and unfreaked out so that Charlie could, like, rely on his calm, or something? But no, I just didn't like it, sorry lol Though I still liked how he basically told Charlie that he believed in his inner strength and that he knew, without a doubt, that Charlie wan't going to let his fear get the better of him. That was a beautiful proof of trust and it's something Charlie needed. I also loved how we saw Alan bringing Amita and Charlie breakfast the next morning, with a cup for himself - such a sweet thing to do. And he gave Charlie advice, which was cool too :-)
The best part though was when Alan paid a little visit to the FBI because he was checking on his boys. This is totally a Alan thing to do and it filled me with glee. And I even liked the fact that he didn't let them know he was here - as if he trusted them to take care of each other. He didn't want to interrupt their bonding. That was great.
And I also adore the idea of Alan and Megan being comfortable enough with each other to be able to have dinner together without either of 'the boys' between them.
Oh speaking of Alan and all: the backstory. So. Okay. Nice backstory here, Charlie being terrorised by a bully and having Don walk him home - though man, fic writers already knew that! - but the story that went with it; Alan watching through the window to see how Charlie would react at being bullied while on his own - well, I don't know, the would-love-to-be-a-mother-one-day in me cringed at the thought. How long did he wait? And what does it teach a kid exactly? That they can, indeed, face up bigger guys without submitting to fear or actually to them, or that violence is a good solution? I'm torn *sigh*
Charlie now. Ohhh freaked out!Charlie is always a sight to behold. He killed me when hesaved grabbed the laptop! And after, when it's over and done with, he's still clutching it to his chest and oh lookit! A woobie with his blanket!
I loved his reaction - I think DK does shaky!Charlie wonderfully. I loved how he was able to rationalise his fear - how he knew it was statistically improbable that a shooting occured again and that what he was afraid of was being afraid and I thought it absolutely rocked.
His avoidance of the office rang true as well, since it's how Charlie copes when he's overwhelmed with something - "Uncertain Principle" the story with P v NP when his mother was dying being the prime example of that.
Also, sure he's already been on crime scenes and he's even been shot at but it was different this time, it wasn't just a crime scene where strangers were attacked, it was in a familiar place with people he knew, so yeah, big difference.
His recovery might have happened a bit abruptly but it didn't upset me or anything. He had a breakthrough and then he decided to face his fear and he helped solve the case - the string thing cracked me up - and then he even helped Don and hey, why not?
I loved that last scene, the spaghetti thing was really cute and funny - though seeing them snap those spaghetti really hurt me, but that's neither here nor there. Charlie's 'not every story has to have a point' was pretty brilliant. And when those stories help distracting Big Brother and cheer him up, well they're just perfect ;-) They were so cute together - and I just love how the scene was filmed. It really looks like they're not doing this for us... it sounds so natural.
On the Random Stuff:
The first sequence was great - Megan with her headphones on, then drinking her coffee with Colby, David doing an interrogation, Don and Charlie in the office, Charlie explaining his formula...
I adored how the team worried and supported Colby after the revelation that it was his bullet that did it. They do make a great team, we already knew that, but it was personal this time.
Colby and David were SO CUTE.
Like I said, the string scene cracked me up. The world truly is Charlie's playground, isn't it? lol
As per usual, I'm waiting forsucky CBS to put the trailer for the next episode *is impatient*
And totally unrelated now: reason why I don't like football. Tonight is PSG v OM - the kind of teams that you know of even when you don't give a toss about football. The PSG fans are famous for being.. twats? Not all of them, obviously - my cousin Julien and Henry are huge PSG fans and they're normal, thx - but a lot of them are just morons that give the fans a very bad name. And because the supporters can't be trusted not to kill each other if they met on their way to the match or on their way back home, TPTB actually set separate train lines for them to reach the stadium. So PSG fans used, say, the RER B and the OM ones, the RER D. With police escort to make sure nothing happens. People owning shops in the vicinity of the stadium have been warned that they'd better close early because you never know what might happen. This is sport? It's fucking sad and pathetic and so very wrong, that's what it is [/football rant]
PS: Oh putain mais c'est pas vrai ça ! Tous les samedis soir y a des abrutis qui font du rodéo sauvage dans ma rue avec leur scooters modifiés à la con ! Ca me rend dingue !

Date: 2006-04-29 09:41 pm (UTC)Yeah, I'm lame and superficial. At least I keep the ratings up and promote the show. I suppose that's somehow redeeming...

Date: 2006-04-30 12:40 am (UTC)I'm torn as well! I adore Alan, but his response did seem to be OOC, especially given his previous overprotective attitude towards Charlie (aka Sniper Zero). It's almost like they had him do a 180 to make this point. And I keep picturing little tiny Charlie, younger and smaller than anyone else in his class, getting pushed down, and Alan just watching. Nope, doesn't fly.
protective!Don in action
Much with the hotness. *g*
I had another thought about why we don't get much Don/Charlie time re Charlie's freakout. Obviously this was their Colby ep of the season (and a damn fine one it was, too), so less emphasis on the Eppes boys, but that left a big gaping hole that needs to be filled. *looks around for the fanfic* *g*
Oh, man, you haven't seen the trailer yet?! So. Good. *waits impatiently for you to see it*

Date: 2006-04-30 09:29 am (UTC)Yes, Don's almost background position in that episode - causing the lack of Don/Charlie time - seemed to be because they wanted to give more room to the others; Colby but also David and Megan. That's how I saw it too. Doesn't mean I have to like it though *pout*
No I still haven't seen it *cries* As a matter of fact, I'm gonna check the site again right after I post this.

Yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! DK was brilliant at playing freaked out!Charlie, I thought. But, then again, he always is.
This is sport? It's fucking sad and pathetic and so very wrong, that's what it is
Heh, have I mentioned lately I love you? Because I do. A lot. You are so right. Though I do have a hate-hate relationship with most group sports, so I might not be the right one to talk. *g*

DK is just so very perfect for Charlie. He gives us a lovely range of emotions, pretty vulnerable ones and that's just all kinds of awesome!
