Today is special, people! It's the birthday of the lovely and so very talented [livejournal.com profile] rhianne. Happy Birthday to you, mate! Here to a fantastic day *cheers*

Part One of my Lazy & Grey Sunday has been accomplished, namely watching my Doctor Who download. I'm falling in love with the new series, Ten and Rose each time a little more *happy sigh*

So okay first I suppose that was the real Sarah Jane? Ie she was the actual actress who played the part in a previous series? And which Doctor was it, then? Also can someone help me with some of the references they made? Like, what was the 'I thought you'd died' 'I didn't but everyone else' - or something like that - referring to? How did they part ways?

I so wish I'd always known about Doctor Who, wish I'd been following it for the longest time because I wanted to feel the thrill of seeing her again... but as it is, and though I didn't have any kind of story with that character, I still loved her immensely - she's such a great lady and she so kicks ass - and I might have cried at the end, read I totally did. Also, I truly thought they'd killed K9 and man I was sad for that too *sniffles* We're three episodes into the series and I've already cried for two of them? Is DW going to break some kind of record for me, I wonder *is curious*

It was great how they addressed that theme: the fact that the Doctor doesn't age when his Companions do, how he has to leave them behind one day because even though they might spend the rest of their lives with him, he can't spend the rest of his with them and it's a theme that always makes me so sad with that kind of immortal - or kinda immortal, depending - characters. It's such a lonely life, such a high price to pay. I thought they dealt with the idea wonderfully. It was both sad and beautiful. And intense.

Another moment that was great was not!Giles confronting Ten about the universe paradigm thingie? When he offers everything Ten - or Sarah Jane - might have wished for. I loved the 'everything has its time' speech. It was fantastic. Even more so that it came from Sarah Jane herself.

I love how Doctor Who can, in one episode, makes me laugh and cry. They display such a high range of emotions in just one storyline. That's brilliant! They certainly know how to play with us :-)

As for the Random Stuff:

  • K9 was AWESOME! I love him soooo much *cooes* And I was sad when I thought they'd killed him but Ten made me him better and Sarah Jane was smiling again and everything was good. I so want a K9 now! Not the big one obviously, but a wee K9 as a keychain or a little toy or something *sigh*

  • Giles SO rocked! He looked so mean and dangerous and classy and scary. Hee he was great!

  • Mickey was great too. He has great lines :-) Poor guy, though, I'd have been hurt by Rose's unenthusiastic reaction when he asked if he could join them. Not that I don't get where she's coming from, but that has to sting, you know?

  • Rose v Sarah Jane was awesome too and their immediate hostility cracked me up - Jim Ellison doesn't have anything on them as far as territorial behaviour is concerned lol I loved their little contest, too. And when they made up and started to laugh and laugh and laugh I was totally smitten with their duo. I loved it even more when Ten arrived and they laughed even louder, mocking him - his clueless little face was just too cute!

  • Something else that was so incredibly cute was Ten-K9. Aww! I loved Ten's squeal when he saw him for the first time and his 'he recognises me' line - the delivery was so perfect and just too cute for words :-)

  • And yes, Doctor Who can do cute, he can do geeky down to a T as well but he can do dangerous too. I loved his 'I'm so old now. I used to have so much mercy' line. Ten with an edge is a sight to behold, yay!

  • Oh and I almost forgot the Torchwood ref again. It's like a game somehow: spot the Torchdwood reference :-)

  • Doctor Who rocks so much! Actually... oh yeah, I think I might need a DW icon!

And now, off for Part Two of my Lazy & Grey Sunday: read Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman snuggled in bed. No wait, maybe first hunt down some DW icons and then start my reading. Yeah, totally works :-)

I just watched this as well, as I was out last night. It is the same actress who played Sarah Jane originally. She was around the 3rd/4th doctors era, I think. I'm a bit too young to know for sure! And for that reason, I don't know what happened to her when she left the doctor. I'm sure if you googled it, you'd find out! It was a great ep and ASH was brilliant. I cried buckets at the end as well. This was the best one this series so far and I'm still getting used to Ten and liking him a bit more each time. For me the key theme of this was everything changes and you can't go back, only forwards. For icons, try [livejournal.com profile] dwicons And yeah, Torchwood seems to be this season's Bad Wolf...

Yes, yes! I'm currently attempting the daunting task of catching up with the old series, and I've seen the first 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) season. He "inherited" Sarah-Jane from his 3rd incarnation, and she's traveled with him quite a bit. I haven't seen their parting though, nor the events leading up to it, so I can't help with that.

They also made a reference to the "Rose - Bad Wolf" thing in the werewolf episode! When the werewolf tells Rose she has "something of a wolf" about her. I liked that. :)

So that would be the third incarnation of the Doctor that she met? Thanks for the info. I'll read the next comment to see if someone can tell me more about her *g*

    You're right, they did!

That was it, yes. At first it was as if Sarah Jane was clinging to the past - though maybe she just needed some kind of explanation - and in the end, she was talking about how everything has its time until the final act when stays on Earth instead of joining the Doctor again.

It was a great episode *happy sigh*

Thanks for the link, I found a nice Tardis icon already, I'll look for more later :-)

Oh, I'm so envious of all you folks who are watching the current series of Dr. Who. Sci-Fi is carrying last year's series, so I've met Rose and Ten, and am enjoying it immensely, but I have to wait a YEAR to see Sarah Jane again! Waaaaahhh!

~ahem~ Okay, Sarah Jane traveled with two doctors. She was with Three (Jon Pertwee, white-haired gent with the big caped traveling coat) for a year or so. Then, when he regenerated into Four (Tom Baker, wild-curly-haired gent with the loooooong scarf), she stayed with him another year or two. Total, she was with the Doctor for three years, or maybe four; I'm shaky on the exact time period. But Sarah Jane was one of the longer-staying companions, and I think my favorite; she seemed "realer" than the others.

I may be mixing up her leaving with another companion, in which case someone else can set us both straight. But I THINK that SJ just decided one day that enough was enough. The Tardis had brought them to a place just a few miles from her home, and within a few months of when she'd left -- in other words, a short enough time that she could cover it up with various excuses. Since the Tardis was so unreliable at getting them where/when they intended to go (it seemed worst during the fourth Doctor's reign), she seized the opportunity and decided to go home. ** I remember the awkward goodbye scene, Four outwardly cheerful, SJ "bucking up" and resolute -- and the wistful look on her face as the Tardis disappeared from view.

** I'm pretty sure all that's right. What I'm real shaky on is the companion's goodbye speech. Someone said, "My aunt always told me that if something's not fun anymore, stop doing it. And this has stopped being fun." But I'm not sure if that was Sarah Jane or Tegan (fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, blond gent in white cricket outfit with a stalk of celery on his lapel).

::sigh:: I really should order the CD-sets. But there're so many, it'll be a BIG investment.

I just watched "The Hand of Fear," which is where Sarah Jane left, so here's exactly how it happened:

Sarah Jane was upset at the Doctor because he was pretty much being himself. In other words, she'd almost gotten killed, and -- instead of listening to her rant -- he was more interested in trying to get the TARDIS to work properly. She got fed up, told him she wanted to go home, and stormed off to go grab her things. He, in the meantime, didn't hear a word that she said.

While she was gone, the Doctor got a message from Gallifrey calling him home. He realizes that he can't take Sarah Jane with him, so he decides to take her home. When Sarah Jane comes back out with all of her things, he asks her how she knew he was leaving her (since, like I said, he hadn't been listening to a word she said earlier.)

She's completely shocked when he tells her that he's really leaving her, and it's obvious that she was only bluffing. He tells her that he really doesn't have a choice, though, so she "bucks up" (as [livejournal.com profile] starwatcher307) put it) and leaves. Then she stands there in the street, a heartbroken look on her face, watching the TARDIS fade away.

As for her comment last night about how the Doctor didn't drop her off where he was supposed to.... *grin* He told her that they were pretty much right in the middle of her neighborhood. After the TARDIS disappeared, though, she realized that he messed up again. In fact, the very last words she says on the show are her laughing wryly and saying "He blew it."

Would you want me to burn the current series, then? Just let me know.

Thanks for the info about Sarah Jane :-) I'm a bit confused now because the way she talked about the Doctor, it almost sounded like their parting had been an accident or something. She's actually been waiting for his return ever since, thinking he'd been killed and that was the reason why he never came back to her. Though okay, did the Doctor tell her he would come back when she left? In that case, yeah, I can understand why she's been so upset all those years... Hmm, maybe I just need to watch the episode a second time, I might have missed some pieces of dialogues *nods*

Okay, well I did get it mixed up a bit. The 'not fun anymore' must have been Tegan, then. There have been so many companions coming and going. One even died (Adric, I think), which upset the doctor greatly.

Burning - no thanks. I like to fuss, but I'll see it eventually. Sarah Jane though... well, if I change my mind, I'll give you a shout.

I remember watching, and LOVING, Doctor Who when I was a little girl. It was on the Public Broadcasting channels, and while I was too young to understand the concepts of series, timeline, or an arching plotline I loved each show. I wish now that I too could buy all the box sets because they were marvelous, but that's not going to happen anytime soon (except I am SO getting the new series S1 when it comes out in July).

Mouse, you mentioned downloading eps somewhere? Where do you get yours because most of the eps you mention I haven't seen (granted, I've only recently come onto this series as I only recently got back cable!).

... by the way, where did BSG on Scifi go? Cancelled (NO!!!)?

    Date: 2006-04-30 04:37 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com
I so wish they'd aired the show in France when I was a kid, I just know I'd have been a fan.

I'm thinking of buying the season with Nine on DVD - I squeed when I saw them at Virgin the other day; I don't think they were that expensive so maybe I'll cave in. Or I'll wait three weeks and ask The Esu to get the box set for my bday. Decision decision lol

I download all my tv shows from bittorent - and I always go over at Mininova; here is the Doctor Who (http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=doctor+who) page.

BSG is on hiatus - that is, I think the second season finished some time ago.

And wasn't Dr Who fantastic?! I LOVED it in so many ways *g* In fact, I'm feeling the Dr Who love so much that I bought myself a Dalek birthday cake today *eg*

    You're quite welcome :-)

It was fantastic. I started downloading the new series thinking it would be fun but I'm completely falling in love with it! I'm now thinking of going back to the previous series - I saw the box set at the mall the other day...

Ohhh a Dalek birthday cake? Man that's awesome! I don't suppose you could take a picture of it? I mean, you already ate it and all? And does it mean they also have, like, Tardis biday cakes as well?

    Date: 2006-04-30 05:19 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] rhianne.livejournal.com
Hee! Nope, the cake is still intact, so I'll take a piccie and upload it later :) And the season one box set is well worth getting, I prefer David Tennant *drools*, but Chris Eccleston does make a very good Doctor! And you simply have to see Captain Jack Harkness - he's a bi conman who shows up halfway through season one and pretty much steals the entire show (and he's severely srop dead gorgeous to boot ;-))

Like, what was the 'I thought you'd died' 'I didn't but everyone else' - or something like that - referring to?

I'm pretty sure that was a reference to the rest of the Time Lords being gone. As I said above, the last time Sarah Jane saw the Doctor he was being called home to Gallifrey. When he never came back, she thought he must have died ... instead, he just moved on: found new companions, regenerated a couple of times, etc. By this point, though, all of the other Time Lords are dead (ceased to exist, or whatever the heck you want to call what happened at the end of the Time War) so that's what he means by "everyone else."

Before I do anything else I have to have a big old squee for K9. Because, K9! He's a part of my childhood, I so loved that metal dog, he was so cool and just, K9 *g*

I was thrilled to see him again, I swear, I got the biggest smile. Sarah Jane not so much, she was just another woman really, which was a shame as it blunted the impact. I did think she was awesome and her pissing contest with Rose was both funny and touching. In fact the whole episode pulled on the heart strings. It must be dreadful knowing you'll go on and have your companions grow old and maybe die. Hmmm, the doctor obviously needs a pretty immortal companion. Sorry, going off on a tangent there.

So yeah, great episode, made even better with K9.

K9 was so adorable! And Ten was incredibly cute as well, they made a lovely pair ;-)

Too bad you didn't care much about Sarah Jane, but at least she grew on you during the ep, you could appreciate her scenes, anyway. It would have sucked otherwise *nods*

Hmmm, the doctor obviously needs a pretty immortal companion

    Hee he totally does!
