True Witness
Jan. 7th, 2004 05:36 pmI took a break from my reading True Witness. I really started reading it yesterday night (I'd only read the very first pages in the train last week), because of course, when I go to bed at past 2.00 am, it does not mean I'm going to go to sleep - and since I was dying to finally read it, well I caved in and started the book.
It was even better than I hoped for! I had high expectations for that book, see, and I wasn't disappointed. Oh boy wasn't I disappointed!
The only problem is, I'm almost at the end of the story now - so I decided to take a break, in the illusion that it'll make the book last longer - even though I know I'll finish in a few.
I so love Daniel Hood. I mean, the whole story is wonderful - and dark, darker than I expected, even if in a different style that some other stories - but I think what attracted me first in that series is his character. I never met a character like him. He's just fascinating. What I like is how he's described at this gentle scholar, this kind individual, smart man, how he's physically smaller than most, and knows he's physically weaker than most people around him - and how, in spite of - or maybe because of it, he decided to make of his mind and his intelligence his only weapon. He's simply one of the strongest, one of the most upright, the most honest, the most gentle character I'd ever read about. I'm always blown away by his attitude. He's so moving, and so loveable *sigh*
Right now, I just left him with his kidnapper, facing a rapist and a murderer who was actually going to rape him, but was made to stop because Daniel's mind and tongue are sharper than anything else. Despite his terror - and make no mistake, he is terrified, he just knows he's going to be killed - Daniel was able to bawl the rapist out, and made his aggressor beat him into consciousness instead.
Jack Deacon and Brodie are still great, but Daniel is a character you can't help but be totally fascinated by. Well, that is, I can't help it *g* And believe me, I love Brodie and Jack as well!
Also, I wasn't expecting the story to deal with a serial killer who kidnapped, abducted, raped and killed young boys. I mean, the case is ten years old, but it is here, in the background. It was a pleasant surprise - and I know how twisted it might sound, btw. But I just mean that the author didn't shy away from a difficult and delicate theme, and dealt with it tactfully.
I got hooked on Jo Bannister's series when I first read Echoes of Lies, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on True Witness. Now that it's almost finished, I can't wait to get Reflections as well. I think amazon.com is going to become my best friend lol
Now, on another unrelated note. I love DSL. I really do. I've been more active on LJ, I've been able to read carefully my flist, comment more, I was able to speak for hours with people, to surf without thinking of anything, and it's just overall wonderful, but it sure can suck all the same from time to time! I tried to log in this afternoon, and I couldn't. When I was finally granted access, it had totally messed up with OE, making all my mails and other folders disappear! This is getting old, you know? I'll just wait and see if they deign reappear like they did last time, but seriously guys, why did you attack my MAILS! *glare*
And finally. Look at the beautiful and sexy icon
yami_tai made for me! Isn't it the best? *schnuzzles Tai*
