Okay. So. On the question of Ugly Betty; [livejournal.com profile] rosengirl, you'll be happy to know that I think I could get into it. Once you focus on the crack and accept that the whole OTT and stereotypical thing is part of it, it get easier to go with the flow. It's crack and funny and it can be quite touching too.

Also, I really do like many of the characters: Betty is all kinds of awesome - though, boy, does she make me cringe sometimes! - the whole Suarez clan is very dear to my heart - I adore Justin! And I adore that his character is the way he is - and I really like Christina. Daniel has daddy issue and big brother issue and confidence issue and that's of the good. Oh and I'm happy because Christopher Gorham's character came in the picture and I can't wait to see more of him.

And speaking of shows that recently made it to France. I watched the first two episodes of Friday Night Lights on Sunday. I liked it. It wasn't Love at First Sight or anything but I watched both episodes from start to finish. Which surprises me a bit because I don't give a damn about American football. I tried to watch a match once - from the Superbowl - and it made me laugh. But apparently FNL caught my interest.

Though, wow, the religious theme is so heavy! No wonder so many things are screwed up in our world; God is apparently way too busy dealing with American football! QED.

Anyway, this is another show I'll try. See if I wanna follow it every week. Technically it's not my kind of show but you never know...

On the book front now. I'm halfway through Liquor by Poppy Z Brite and I'm having a blast. If you enjoy queer lit - which, dude, I didn't forget who I'm talking to, I'm just sayin', is all - and food? This book is for you. Food porn, guys, food porn. And friendship and love. With a serving of mystery - this is Brite, after all. What's not to love?

Yeah, pretty much everyone I've seen talk about FNL mentions how even if you don't like American football you should give the show a try because the football is the least important part.

To be honest, I couldn't even get to the part where I could make up my mind about the football - I just couldn't get past all of the religious stuff.

It's a pity, because I hear it's an amazing show, but the second they started praying before a game was the second I knew this was not my cup of tea. ;)

I do love Ugly Betty, though.

Hi, I have an exam tomorrow today, which I will fail because I didn't even really study (I don't even know why I applied for it, really, I knew I wasn't gonna study) and I should go to sleep but I don't wanna. And how are you doing? :D

Many people in my flist are raving about FNL but I never felt the desire to download it. When I saw that it was going to air here, I decided to give it a go - more for Kyle Chandler than anything else, to be honest :-)

The religious stuff is, like, half of the show, isn't it? Actually, what with the American football thing and the religious thing, it does look like a Very American Show.

Question is, will I get into it or not? It always amuses me when I'm not so sure about a show; I'm so used to falling for a new series in the first ten seconds minutes, you know? lol It's weird because on the one hand, I know it's not my kind of show at all. On the other, I can't help but be curious about it. Oh, well.

Ugly Betty is growing on me *nods*

Hi! Good luck with the exam tomorrow today, then? What is it? And I hope it won't be too horrible, then! *hugs*

I'm doing just fine, thanks :-) I should be freaking out because I'm still out of a job but, well, things will improve sooner or later. Right? And, in the meantime, we're having a great FP Weekend this weekend in Lyon and it's gonna be a blast!

FNL - just my 2ps worth

Unsurprisingly, it's not on in the UK so I downloaded a couple to see what the fuss was about - watched them both, *hated* it, I'm afraid; just didn't get what's to like. ::shrug::

Really? You mean we got two shows before the UK did? I always thought we came last - what with the time it takes TPTB to dub the whole season and everything...

I'd have thought at least Ugly Betty aired in the UK, actually. What about the German version, then, do you know?

Only FNL isn't on in the UK (that's the show I hated *g*). Ugly Betty's been on for a while - I'm kind of indifferent to UB; it's OK, don't love it, don't hate it.

I don't see FNL ever getting on to a mainstream station here, it's just too American. It'll no doubt go out on on eof the satellite stations eventually.

Ok.

Funny you should say that because it's not on a mainstream station here, which would have to be expected from a brand new show, admittedly.

Come to think of it, Canal+, TF1 and M6 are usually the networks that are pretty hot on the new show front so it's a sort of surprise to see FNL start somewhere else...

Liquor is wonderful. I love to read about food and what's not to like about GMan and Ricky really. I love how matter of fact their relationship is. You might want to look for The Value of X which is kinda of the prequel to Liquor, it deals with the time Ricky went to NY, how their family know but act as if they are only friends.

I love this series a lot. It's a shame that Poppy isn't ready to write again in that universe and that the editor didn't understand how to sell this series. It's about food, life and friendship, the mystery is just garnish.

I was aways most of the day but I think I'll take some time tonight to finish the novel. I'm really enjoying the whole thing and Rickey and G-Man are such sweet and interesting characters!

I love how matter of fact their relationship is.

Exactly! I heartily agree *nods*

Hee I didn't know that! I knew of the sequels but not the prequel, oh that's awesome! Thanks for the heads up :-)

She had just finished writing Soul Kitchen when Katrina happened. Poppy Brite lives in New Orleans. She and her husband Chris (who is a chef) lost their house, etc. She started to write again there's a manuscript titled Shrimps Blues something but it's unfinished and is more Lenny centric but her editor didn't know what to do with Soul Kitchen and ended their contract IIRC. Poppy Brite has a new house but is still very fragile from what I can read on her livejournal. She hasn't really written much since Katrina.

I tried watching both Ugly Betty and FNL and urgh. Though at least Ugly Betty didn't take itself seriously so while it was boring to me, I could get the crack value of it. But FNL just didn't do anything for me. The boys and their coach are pretty, obviously, but that's about it, lol. I quite enjoyed the first ep of the Sarah Connor Chronicles, though. Pretty girls and lots of explosions, more my style. *g*

Also, is what you're reading a sequel to The Value of X? *is curious* And you wouldn't by any chance consider bringing it with you this weekend? *sheepish grin* Just so I can have a peek? I didn't really like the writing for the Value of X but I enjoyed the characters and so now I'm not sure whether I want to buy more in the series or not. If I could have a peek and see what the style is for this one, it might help me make up my mind. Pretty please? I'll give you a couple of books for your trouble, if you want. :-)

PS: if you don't have it and want it, The Value of X is yours, actually. :-)

I have the pilot of the Sarah Connor Chronicles sitting on my HD, I'll try it as soon as I can.

It's a sequel to The Value of X, yes. I knew about Liquor's sequels but not the sequel so that was a pleasant surprise *g*

I'll bring Liquor with me, no worries. Hopefully you'll like the style of that novel better. I agree that Rickey and G-Man are delightful characters.

And, DUDE! I'd love to have The Value of X, thank you! *kisses*

FNL is on French tv? *is clueless*. I too enjoyed tonight's episodes of UB. There's a high crossover factor with The OC which doesn't hurt ... lol

There's a high crossover factor with The OC which doesn't hurt ... lol

Mark ?

I love Ugly Betty. It definitely took me a few shows to get into it, but you fall in love. Seriously!

I've never watched FNL, probably because it takes place in Texas and all of the religious overtones. *puke* That would really make me sick!

As for football in general, it's a fantastic game! My team, the Green Bay Packers, are one game away from going to the Superbowl! That would be so freaken' brilliant, let me tell you. I've got my Packers lanyard on and everything right now. It's a confusing game, stop and go, but once it's been explained to you and you watch a few, it's the best. I missed it SO much whilst in France.

I think lots of people have the same reaction before watching FNL: It's Texas, there's religion and football... That's why there isn't a wide audience for the show. It's a pity really, because the pitch isn't truly describing the show. It is truly a wonderful show.

Date: 2008-01-15 06:55 pm (UTC)

Ugly Betty is growing on me, I'll admit. The characters are pretty nice. And I'm usually hooked via the characters, so it's all good.

The religious overtones - though I'm not sure 'overtone' is right as it's just pretty much everywhere. Or it was throughout those two episodes, I have no idea whether it'll be toned down a little afterwards - is surprising. Or not, I mean, considering the story and the location but we're just not used to that kind of thing, so, yeah.

Anyway...

I wonder what everybody has with FNL...
