This might be an odd question - or not at all, I don't know - but I was wondering if it was common for a mother and her daughter/s to sound exactly the same on the phone even though they don't sound the same in any other circumstances? Because that's what happens with my mother, sister and me.

Now that we all live at our respective places, people obviously don't have the same problem - well, apart from when my sister or I are at the parental unit's and answer the phone, of course - but they used to always mistake one for the others.

It never failed to make us smile because when we're not on the phone no-one would make that mistake, and what I mean is, even if they closed their eyes and didn't see us, no-one would confuse one of us for the others, but as soon as we're talking about a phone call, then we confuse everyone. My sister used to pretend to be me sometimes when she didn't want to talk to the person on the other end of the line and as long as she kept the conversation short, she was never caught.

I also remember a couple of times when I listened to a voicemail and thought it was my sister when er, it was actually me *cough* Dude, it happens!

Anyway, I was just curious. People are always asking really silly and pointless questions on LJ - 'what's the colour of your favourite pair of socks, I'm dying to know plz, fill my poll!' 'I've always wanted to know how many sugars you take with your drink in the morning, plz tell me!' etc etc... - so I guess it's my turn.

On other news, I had a nice day today and I got some good news re a matter I was slightly worried about so it's all good \o/

Speaking of good; is it true that the writer's strike might come to an end soon? Or is it still wishful thinking? Also, I was curious as to how many people had lost their jobs because of the strike and the NYT talks about ten thousands of them. Dude, talk about collateral damage...

It's the same for me and my mom : we sound exactly the same on the phone, so when her brothers call at home, I always have to say, like two minutes after the beginning of the talk, : uh, yeah, but it's Marie, not Françoise ^^; Only my grandma was able to hear a difference.

I've read all the comments sent to this entry and it'd seem it's pretty common - or common for the women on my flist, at least - for mother/daughter to sound alike on the phone even though they don't 'IRL'.

I think the one person who's able to tell us apart is - sweetly enough - my dad. I try sometimes to answer as if it was my mom but he always laughs and asks to talk to his 'real wife thx'.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity :-)

I don't know if it's COMMON, but me and my mother sound NOTHING alike in RL and we're always being mistaken for each other on the phone. To a point where one of her boyfriends was...erm. You get the point. And I had to interrupt and say, "Um. I think you're actually looking for my MOM."

Ah, fun times.

From the comments I read, it'd seem it might be more common than we think. Or it's just very common for women on my flist ;-)

I just find funny the fact that people who don't sound alike at all 'IRL' might have the same voice on the phone. I mean, when I'm talking to someone on the phone, they sound exactly the same as usual... so how come it's different for some of us as soon as we're on the phone?

And, dude, the boyfriend story made me smile though, wow, talk about an awkward moment! lol

When I lived at home, my mother's friends would sometimes wonder if I was her. Never had the opposite problem. I did have a polite 'phone' voice, but even so...

Wouldn't happen now - that was twenty-five years ago. :-)

Sounds like it's pretty common, after all. I just think it's funny that a voice can come different on the phone and 'IRL' for some people, because when I'm on the phone with my family/friends, I don't notice any difference in their voices or the way they talk. It's the same for me both on the phone and out...

I guess there will come a time when no-one can mistaken our mother with us, yeah.

You know, we do get mistaken at times too. Not often as we obviously don't live in the same house, but it did. Though I've been mistaken for Corey on the phone too, so who knows what that means *g*

I've heard rumours the strike is over. I hope they're true.

It always amused me when people mistook my mother for either of us, of my sister for me - and vice versa - since it would seem no-one would have that problem if we were not on the phone. What's up with that? I never find any difference in the voice of someone, be it when they're on the phone or not. How come it's different in some cases?

I love silly questions *g*

My mum and I are nothing alike except when it comes to the phone, and then it takes somebody who knows us both very well to be able to tell us apart... it makes for fun when we answer each other's phones *g*

I am constantly mistaken for my mother (or my brother, weird yes) on the phone.

Grandad goes through half the family's names but that's because he's forgetful.

It's probably because you live together for a long while and your accents will be very close. ;p

Yeah but when someone you know call you on the phone, don't they have the same voice as usual? Ie the same voice as when you're talking to them outside and everything? So why would we sound different to other people? That's what I'd like to know :-)

People always confuse me with my little sister on the phone, she's 9 years old so it's kind of embarassing lol

Apparently the strike might be over pretty soon, I still don't want to get my hopes up until it's officially confirmed :D

LOL sockpuppets ;-)

Hee!

My sister and I sound pretty much the same on the phone too, according to other people. If I call my mum she usually thinks I'm Christine. Um, come to think of it, she usually *calls* me Christine anyway - she's the worst person I know for getting the names of her children/grandchildren mixed up. I can't remember the last time she got my name right! :-D

Lol Do you think we should create our own familial wank, then?

she's the worst person I know for getting the names of her children/grandchildren mixed up.

My parents do that sometimes, too, mix my sister's and my names. It used to drive us crazy when we were kids; as if our own parents couldn't remember our names. Oh the drama! lol

Though I think my godmother is the one holding some kind of record as far as mixing names is concerned; once - admittedly she was pretty tired that time and wasn't really focused on, well, anything - she called the names of her three kids and my sister's before calling mine. Since all our names end up with an 'a' - including my male cousin - it sounded pretty funny. Actually, when she's in France with my cousins, she usually never manages to call the right name at first try. Just one of her things. I think it's cute :-)

I'd say that it's fairly common that relatives of the same gender sound the same on the phone.
People have had difficulties separating me, my sister and mother. My mother and her sister aswell, they sound very much alike. To others though, I can always tell who it is. *lol*

Sounds like it's fairly common, from the comments, yes. Technically it's not the sounding alike that I find funny it's the sounding alike 'but only on the phone'.

Mind you, I don't think I mistake many of my cousins for my aunts when I call them... to me they just sound exactly the same on the phone as 'IRL' and since I don't think their voices sound alike, I don't have a problem recognising them there. Of course, they might be the exception, then :-)

Sorry, what I forgot to write was, that I think it's something with the sound in the phone that removes some differences in the voices. :)

Wait...when did your 'leave a comment' change from 'worship slash' to 'bring me some pie'?

I've never been mistaken for my mother, or she I, on the phone. And my daughters and I have never been mistaken for each other either. But judging by the other comments here, maybe we're the weird ones.

Since I changed my layout - you noticed I changed it, right? ;-) - last Saturday.

But judging by the other comments here, maybe we're the weird ones.

You, being the weird one? How strange! lol But yeah it'd seem the consensus is on the 'sounding nothing alike 'IRL' but sounding exactly the same on the phone' thing. Which I still think is funny.

Yes, they're talking about a possible end to the strike. But before you get your hopes up that things will then go back to normal, I have to tell you that the actors are going to be starting their own negotiations with the studios soon. So we may then have scripts but no performers. *sighs*

There's been a lot of collateral damage because of the strike, and it's the little people in the non-glamourous service industries who are hurting. It's a ripple effect. People associated with the studios have no work because there are no scripts. And if the food service employees and hairdressers and wardrobe people lose their jobs, that means less business for the businesses they normally patronise, and so on and so on. And then of course throw the mortgage crisis into the mix, and it just makes everything even worse.

It's always the 'little people' who are the first to hurt, uh? Doesn't sound fair. Though few things in life are fair, so I guess it's just one of those things...

And then of course throw the mortgage crisis into the mix, and it just makes everything even worse.

Does sound pretty bleak for them, yes.
