The wonderful thing about having one of your beloved shows air in the UK? Is that you don't have to wait the next day to get it! No different time zone between you and the download. Well, yes, there's an hour gap, but that's nothing!
Merlin is getting better with each new episode, true fact. And it proved it again tonight.
Okay so how wonderful is Arthur and Merlin's relationship? Wonderfully wonderful, yes! How did you guess it was gonna be my answer?
Oh, Arthur, you are so fantastic! So noble! So brave. So incredibly in love with Merlin! ♥ ♥
What you wouldn't do for him! You couldn't leave your boyfriend alone when he was about to face so many dangers, could you? You'd defy your father, disobey his orders again - in fact, take the risk of provoking a war if it came to King WhatsHisName's ears that you'd intervened, to protect Merlin. Oh, be still my heart!
And it's not even a secret love story! Everyone can see it! It's like they can't even hide the love. Just loved it when Merlin's got his mother's blessing at the end. He sorta got Uther's blessing in last episode, and now his mother. Arthur and Merlin can officially get married now! I think I'll make Merlin Arthur's consort in my fic; it's practically canon that it's where they're leading, right?
So William was Merlin's former boyfriend, wasn't he? Or he was at least smitten with Merlin but Merlin must have known, even back then, that he was meant to be with someone else so he never gave himself to William that way, and this is the real reason behind William's hostility towards Arthur. He could see right away that Arthur had Merlin's heart and soul. And hot little body.
And Arthur wasn't fooled, of course. He tried not to be too jealous or possessive, though he didn't exactly manage it. Which is why he was so bossy. Though, okay, he always is. Whatever, this was totally Arthur being jealous over Will. And maybe a little worried that maybe Merlin would realise that he really missed home and would leave him and then maybe would decide to try it with Will, after all.
Not that it would ever happen, but Arthur can be a bit dense sometimes. Except he realised he was a bit harsh and he could see Merlin was really worried and upset so he finally showed his tender side, hence the beautiful scene when they're both putting their armours on. That was such a sweet and gorgeous scene, wasn't it? The love was so strong in that scene, I could almost taste it!
I think when Will died, Arthur realised he'd been unfair towards him and it's another reason why he looked so upset and guilty. Here was a man he'd disliked right away out of jealousy, a man who was, in Arthur's eyes, a rival, and Will actually died for him. Him, Arthur, who'd basically stolen Merlin away from Will. Arthur felt petty by then and not so noble.
By thanking Will for saving his life, Arthur was telling him much more than that. He was telling Will that he would take care of Merlin and he would be worthy of him.
I'm not the only one who watched that episode, right?
And leaving the slash aside - though can it ever really be put aside in that show? Ever? - I really thought it was a great episode! What with the friendship between Merlin and Morgana, Gwen and Arthur really put to the foreground. And Merlin's doubts about his and Arthur's friendship - insecure!Merlin is a new kink of mine. Though when I say 'new' it might not be 100% accurate because I absolutely loved Merlin's "if I don't have my magic I don't have anything, I'm not anyone" - not a direct quote, but it was the gist of it - in an early episode so I really like that trait of him. Seeing someone so powerful doubt his place and his value is always interesting.
So, anyway, yes, much love for Morgana and Gwen joining him right away. They both kick so much ass! Both in a different ways and it's just plain wonderful.
Speaking of women kicking asses; I quite enjoyed seeing the women of the village fight next to the men; and fight fiercely, too! You go, girls!
Arthur coming to the village's rescue was squee-worthy. It's fascinating seeing him become the great king we all know from the legend. And it was touching seeing him realise the hard lives Merlin - and by extension all those villagers - lived.
And I'll repeat myself but that scene between Arthur and Merlin before the battle was just gorgeous! One of my favourites scenes from this season so far.
It was sad that they killed Will like that, but I guess it was the only way to protect Merlin's secret. Though I have to wonder if Arthur truly believed them... what he said at the pyre, could it have been a warning of sorts? A way to tell Merlin that he should trust him and should tell him his secret? In any case, now that he saw the magic appear with Merlin in the vicinity, he's bound to put two and two together one day. He's no fool.
Oh, oh! And I always wondered what Merlin was saying when using the spells and I'm wondering if he's not just sorta describing what he's doing, basically? Just, in Old English? Like, he did say "dragon" - only, not in modern English - when he played with the stick? And then the shape of a dragon appeared? In any case, I loved that moment!
This show is so cool! And see? I did a slash-free part of the review at the end, after all. I can do it!
I seriously need to finish my fic! Then again, with each new episode, I can add more details to my story so it's a lot of fun like that too :-)
Oh and I'm changing the subject now but I meant to say: my mom - because she absolutely rocks! - decided to pay me a little visit this evening - to see "if I still breathed" - and she brought me a couple of packages I'd received the days before. My mailbox being too small, I always use my parents' address when I order stuff on-line. Anyway, one of the packages was my copy of Ten Inch Hero. Delivered in time and with no problem whatsoever from the Swedish site. I have TIH in my possession now! ♥ ♥

Date: 2008-11-23 01:21 am (UTC)And hee omg yes you have to download Merlin! Now! I can't believe you held out this long, either.

Date: 2008-11-23 05:35 pm (UTC)It's just so beautiful. I mean, it's pretty bad, but it's full of the pretty people (there is no-one ugly in Camelot, except for those with strategic scars) and the slash between Arthur and Merlin is only beaten by Lancelot's sexual chemistry with EVERYONE.

Date: 2008-11-23 01:24 am (UTC)Though I have to wonder if Arthur truly believed them...
Yeah, I get more convinced each week that Arthur at least suspects the truth and this week the vibes were especially strong.
Can it be next week, now? *grabby hands*

Yes, that last scene in particular really made me wonder.
Why can't it be next week every Saturday after Merlin, WHY?!

Date: 2008-11-23 07:32 pm (UTC)I loved that scene when they're sleeping together - sleeping together, dude! And the footy play cracked me up. Especially Merlin's reaction to it, or the lack thereof :-)

Date: 2008-11-23 07:34 pm (UTC)All I have to say is that if you had to watch one episode of Merlin, 1x10 was the one! Though 1x04 was pretty good, too, believe you me.
the slash isn't so much subtext as romping around right there in the open with its pants down
Lol Such a perfect way to describe the show! If asked by anyone should watch it, could I use your quote? With credits, obviously :-)

I agree with everything in this post. I loved it too!

Ha, I knew it! Because "draca" is "dragon" in Old English :-)

Date: 2008-11-23 05:20 pm (UTC)Merlin is getting slashier and slashier! I love that!
And I really like that Will knew about Merlin's magic and never betrayed him. The Will/Merlin friendship was really well done in the episode. I think I'd even like to read some Merlin/Will!

That would be a nice pairing to read, yes. Their friendship sounded so solid! It was great to see that Merlin did have someone by his side while growing up.

and what I liked most is that we clearly see that Arthur treats merlin as his equal...
about the spells, i was told that it described what merlin does in old english.

I loved that too! And it was so obvious that Merlin would be crushed if he lost Arthur over this.
and what I liked most is that we clearly see that Arthur treats merlin as his equal...
Oh, that scene before the battle? SO MUCH LOVE! When Merlin is about to help Arthur dress and Arthur is all "it's your turn" now and he ends up helping Merlin with the bracelet thingie. Gorgeous scene!
about the spells, i was told that it described what merlin does in old english.
Awesome! Tai confirmed that it was Old English last week and I thought he might be just describing what he was doing... then I heard the dragon/draca thing and I was like "ha! So maybe I was right!" Thanks :-)

The armour scene. The foot. *loves*

Date: 2008-11-23 08:43 pm (UTC)Dude, when even non-slasher people see the gay love, it really means it's there for ALL TO SEE! It's like Jim and Blair all over again. Except for how we never actually saw Jim and Blair in bed together. Or play footy!
The armour scene, sis, the armour scene! With Arthur being all "you're my equal and I want to prove it to you" and then him helping Merlin with the bracelet thingie. Omg the LOVE! And the reassurance! "It's okay to be scared". Oh, ARTHUR! ♥ ♥
I need more Merlin icons! I need more icon slots!
