So I've been telling people around LJ that the riots hadn't spread to my département, much less my city, all week. I guess it was just a matter of time cause tonight is the night.

I've heard siren calls on and off this evening and I wondered what the hell was happening - wondered if it could be a little riot starting here and calling myself a drama queen in the process, but turns out I was right! My sis just called me and cars are burning in their street. Lovely!

They immediately hid their own so at least they shouldn't lose it and hopefully it won't reach my street at all but man! I've felt so sorry for all those people who have been subjected to the riots, I was certainly hoping Choisy wouldn't be included in the list. Let's just hope the fuckers are underachievers and they'll do a minimum damage - maybe they just targeted one street only. It's only The Esu's luck that it's theirs. I'm not hearing anything anymore, so I don't know - can't reach the sis either so I have no idea. Man it's frustrating.

My Numb3rs download is at 90% - I wish it would hurry so I could watch it, it would make me find my zen place again.

ETA: Finally had my sister on her mobile! Okay so first assessment: a dozen cars burnt in The Esu's street - lot more with the glasses broken in pieces - and a garage has been burnt to the ground [garage, ie repair shop for automotive vehicles] Seems like there was a gas leak as well after they broke something they shouldn't have - well, even less than the rest, that is - but a guy from EDF intervened immediately so it didn't do anything. Firemen and cops have been running all over the place - and there's even an helicopter! I'm hearing it actually.

I'm so not setting a foot outside tonight. But I wish I knew where everyone is tonight cause I can't reach my sis and my parents picked tonight to go out to the restaurant - in Choisy, of course. Talk about a good timing.

I'm not worried per se, but I would be more at peace if everyone was where in their respective houses right this moment.

Thanks *hugs back*

Well, when it finishes downloading, enjoy watching it. Nothing like a nice episode of Numb3rs to help you find your zen place.

I'm so not leaving the house, believe me lol

I'm more anxious to know exactly where my sis and BIL are - and of course my parent picked tonight for a little going out in a restaurant in Choisy and I just have no means of knowing whether it's just a bunch of losers burning three cars or more than that and yeah, I'm kinda frustrated *sigh*

Do you know why these riots started in the first place? The couple articles I read weren't very clear.

I am, no worries *g*

And yeah, they started the same way every riot fucking starts in the suburb. So okay, last week two minors died electrocted after hiding in an transformateur EDF - have no idea how to translate that stuff, sorry - to get away from the police who was after them. Now, there was a third kid with them who survived and it seems he claimed they weren't trying to hide from the police at all, that the police wasn't after them.

Well anyway, those two kids die. Youth in the suburb - what we call les cités to be precise - decide they need to avenge them and start burning cars, bus stops etc... But gvt reacts immediately and launch CRS and stuff... media start to cover the event: resentment over the economic situation in the cités and Sarkosy's method of dealing with those guys are targeted as well and then... it just gets out of control, spreading out and suddenly, cars aren't the only targets anymore and they also burn buses going as far as burning down school or factories as well...

It's just one hell of a mess. Everyone blames everyone and no one knows how to stop it.

Stay put & take care...that's a good plan. I do hope the rest of your family are all okay & that you are right in your hopes that it is only a few losers causing the mayhem.

Civil unrest/demonstrating for a good cause is understandable, but craziness for no good reason & just to reek havoc is utterly ridiculous.

I think I underestimated my département's fuckiness.

I'm always trying to defend my area - Parisian suburb has quite a bad reputation, which with events like those, one might understand *sigh* - but when I see things like that... fuck!

I'm not setting a foot outside tonight and I just have my sister and BIL and they're safe home. My parents are still at the restaurant but seems like nothing happend in that neighborhood so it's okay.

Problem is with the media now. Instead of, like, ignoring those rioters, they cover the events all the fucking time - only problem is? It makes people from other départements want to do better, it's a game for them. Have people on the telly talk about them. It's like they're all trying to do worse than the other...

They hit the Val de Marnes? Man. And here I thought it was bad when it hit the Yvelines, and when my mom told me there were cops patrolling in Chaville. At least they're only doing damages at night right now, but. *sigh* Keep safe, and let us know when you hear from your sister.

(Oh, and would you rather I comment in French in your journal? I'm just so used to speaking English on the 'net, and I didn't realize until I read this that you were french.)

Date: 2005-11-05 11:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com
They certainly did. Apparently the cops were pretty busy tonight - I wonder if it'll warrant a little coverage on the media tomorrow. As if we needed that. And like, who'll be next? They'll trying to do "better" than the other cities...

It's okay, I finally had my sister on her mobile, they're safe. Also, I did an ETA with the damage we could see already...

And dude! You're French? Wow lol And I speak English with the French Posse on LJ too - we switch to French when the mood strikes but usually, it's English between us all so stick to English if you want to *g* I guess it's a trend lol

I had no intention of going out tonight, believe me *g* And it started to calm down now... I had my sister and BIL on the phone and they're safe, so it's ok *relieved sigh*

The fuckers did some damage though - wonder to what extent, I mean, I guess we'll know more tomorrow. We were certainly lucky compared to other cities. The riots started nine days ago and spread all over the Parisian suburb then over France... wonder when they'll fucking stop.

You know, I was kinda wondering what was the part of journalist exaggeration in all of this, and what was happening really (Lyon seems to be spared from the riots for now). But hearing from you that it's in your area makes the thing real, in a way. Hopes everything is all right for you and your family, and that things won't get worse.

Well, I was hoping Choisy wouldn't join the "fun". But really, it was nothing compared to what happened elsewhere - though unfortunately, some families still lost their cars and some others lost their jobs due to the garage Opel burning *shakes head* Tonight is calm and I'm pretty sure we won't have a repeat, so...

I sure wish the media didn't cover it the way they do - right from the start, they should have done it differently cause it only made other racailles want to up the ante and have the news talk about them. Well, let's hope everything will be sorted out soon...

Wow, how did it go last night? Is everybody okay? I'm glad you heard from your sister. And the parents?

I know what you mean about the media coverage - the more they cover it, the worse it gets. And it's hard to tell if there's any truth to the way they're reporting it, too (going back to the way it all started). I was caught in the middle of a riot in Berkeley, CA in 1989 (it was the 20th anniversary of a riot that happened in 1969, so they threw an anniversary riot - so Berkeley!). Luckily, I was able to escape to a friend's house, but as we were getting the hell out of Dodge, we saw all these fraternity/sorority-type kids breaking in the windows of The Gap and stealing jeans, shirts, etc, running down the street with them in their arms. The next day, the newspaper reported that it had been homeless people. I only wish - they could actually have used the clothes! But of course they're not going to blame overprivileged, mostly white brats for causing that kind of senseless damage.

Is there any place safe you can go tonight, or is it so widespread now you might as well stay put? Has anyone been seriously hurt yet? That's something they don't seem to be reporting over here...

Date: 2005-11-06 08:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com
Everything worked out just fine, thanks *hugs* I'm sorry for those who lost their cars, though. But it didn't get worse and it's over now. Here, I mean.

Newspaper - or all kind of news - you really can't always trust them, indeed. Your example is a fine example of that *is disgusted*

No one has been seriously hurt yet - which is a miracle considering they've been burning cars, buses and other factories... sometimes making people leave buses and putting it into fire right after... there was the story of a handicapped woman who didn't leave quickly enough and who got burnt because of it.

There were people who got burnt - civilians as well as firemen - when they couldn't escape the fire but nothing deadly so far. Or so I think, I'm not watching the news anymore, it pisses me off.

For now, few people are using guns, which is also something to be grateful for and apparently even when they did, no casualties were announced so...

I've heard about the riots from my father, since LJ is my only source of news - I hardly watch TV anymore - and I was shocked. I assumed it hadn't spread to your neighbourhood since you didn't mention anything in your LJ, and that the phenomenon would die down rather than intensify. Man, was I wrong :/

Believe me, they were all worried way before I even said anything - and afterwards, it just worse. But it wasn't even because of my entry, just because of what they'd heard on their telly. It's not even as if I was worried about a repeat in my own town, know what I mean?

Skip 550, I feel your pain lol And Silver is being temparamental? Not good. Hope he had a good night sleep and he'll be good again today ;-)
