QAF 411 & SG: Atlantis - eclectic much?

Oooookay, just finished watching 411 - had a busy day today and fought against the Big Bad administrative system so I couldn't watch it earlier - to all those who'll get the reference, it was like a remake of Les Douze Travaux d'Astérix. Not that it was anything new mind, but each time I hope it won't be like the other times - and I'm always proved wrong *shudder*
Damn, where was I? Oh yeah! QAF 411. It was a nice episode, nothing great, but it had its moments *g*
But first, just an observation - can't the QAF crew find a real translator? I mean, they do okay with one-word French, but as soon as it contains more than one, they always screw their lines. So okay, I understand it's not easy finding someone who speaks something else than English in the US, but please, don't tell me it's an impossible mission. It would make for a nice change. Or is it some French Canadian thing? I swear I'm starting to wonder.
And no offense to all of those who don't speak anything else than English btw - I'm just saying that when you're filming a show and you apparently have enough money and resources to make it work, it shouldn't be that difficult to find someone who actually speaks the foreign language you want to use in some episodes, that's all *g*
Anyway, Yeah so I don't have a lot to say this time. Let's just say I'm worried about Em because the whole Drew/Emmett is pretty scary, and what are Linds and Mel going to do now? *sigh* Btw, I loved Lindsay's Did you forget I'm lesbian? to Sam - it cracked me up. No girl, I don't think he forgot, but you sure did. She just doesn't seem to know what she wants, that one. Even her the-whole-thing-made-me-realise-this-is-what-I-really-am sounded a bit trite - in particular if you consider we're talking about her cheating on her wife, pregnant wife may I add. And Mel's come back about how she knew, and has known all along something was missing in Lindsay's life was pretty sad. Don't know how they're going to solve the whole mess, but I'm curious now. And I really like Mel better than Lindsay - Mel has been growing on me since I really got into the series, and it just got confirmed somehow.
Though I'm wondering if bi people didn't appreciate the whole Lindsay/Sam storyline better than I did. Because, as a whole, bisexuals are definitely under-staffed in QAF - you're either straight or gay in that series, it seems. Too bad Lindsay had to cheat on Mel with a guy to make it look like they didn't forget about that part of the population. Doesn't look like the best move to me.
You know, the whole episode could have been titled "How I Tried to Decipher my Own Sexual Orientation Once and For All".
Hunter's storyline was priceless! Ben and Michael cracked me up when they realised he was dating a girl : So if it's not a *boy*, then it's -- ??. Yeah, they cracked me up all right! lol They were so cute in their confusion *huggles them*
Actually it was both funny and moving - Michael's do you think maybe that's just a phase? That he hasn't met the right boy? to Ben and the whole conversation about girls that ensued sure made me laugh, but Michael was pretty touching in his concerns about not being able to understand Hunter now...
I just loved how they twisted the 'coming out' situation - to see the total reverse of what is happening when gay people come out was really cool - it was also interesting to see that Ben and Michael's reactions and concerns were the same after all - I mean, when the parents accept their kids' orientation from the start : will we be able to meet his needs, to understand and help him? It was really sweet *g*
As for the rest - it was okay. Nothing to say, really. Except one thing, all Justin fans must have felt cheated or something. I think we saw him like for 15 seconds? lol
So yeah, it was short. I can do short sometimes, see?
I had something else to say - hmm, what was it? Oh yeah, I read
greensilver's post on preemptive OTPing, and I have to say I really like how she thinks *g* I may join the preemptive S/M slashers - and from a personal point of view, this pairing is just perfect, because, really S/M? Puh-lease! So yeah, in the end, there's a chance I end up being a S/F OTP gal - and I may also end up being nothing at all because I still don't know whether I'll find any interest in this new series, but engaging in some preemptive OTPing is fun anyway - so let's join the game!
And finally, there's a newcomer to LJ - a girl I've been trying to drag here for several months, and she finally caved in - so check
stacy_l's LJ and say hello *g* Besides, some of you may already know her from the SG fandom, so it could be fun *g*
PS: To those who're still having murderous thoughts towards LJ? Please, tell me where we can meet - we have a lot to discuss.
ETA: Argh - Portugal is leading 2 to nil right now. I don't want them to win - do something!
ETA2: Yay! 2 - 1.
ETA3: Damn, Portugal won.

Date: 2004-06-30 01:10 pm (UTC)...and where's the discussion of SG-Atlantis? I'm wondering if anyone really knows what it's all about?

Date: 2004-06-30 01:24 pm (UTC)And for stuff on Atlantis, you have to go there (http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/index.shtml). You'll know everything you need to know - well, as much as we can at this point *g* There's a gallery and a small guide episode and spoilers and stuff.

Date: 2004-06-30 01:16 pm (UTC)I like the fact that Hunter's bisexual. It gives a whole new different vibe to their little once-gay family. =)

Date: 2004-06-30 01:33 pm (UTC)The whole affair with Drew is indeed OOC for Em, isn't it? Or more exactly, I thought Emmett would have learnt his lesson after Ted. Looks like he didn't after all. I really have no idea where this is going. You remember when Emmett talked about being spat on when he was a kid in his hometown? Somehow, I don't really see it as different with Drew metaphorically spitting on him and their 'relationship' each time he thinks it's getting too close to home. Poor Em. Though is he asking for it since he's apparently so in denial and everything? One has to wonder.
And do you think Hunter is straight or bi actually? And yes, I really loved this new storyline *g*

Date: 2004-06-30 01:30 pm (UTC)I started thinking about that after I watched this episode and after my initial little gladness that they're interested in bisexuality at all, I began to realize that they've not done their best here.
It would have been more appealing for one of the single characters to explore bisexuality, and not allow their first foray into that subject to be tainted with some of the stereotypes of confusion and promiscuousness that abound anyway. Slutty is slutty, regardless of who you're being slutty with, in other words.
There are serial bisexuals, or "either/or" bisexuals, who are as serially monogamous as anyone. They have one relationship at a time, it's just that they're attracted almost equally to male and female.
And there bisexuals who seem to need both male and female relationships in sort of a polyandrous situation. They seem to need something from both sexes at once. That's a hard one to work out in our culture, but there are a few that don't see this as a big deal.
The whole thing really hasn't been researched enough to know why anyone is attracted to anyone, period. But, as intriguing as the Linds story line is, it didn't do a lot for the bi image in some ways. It's no more a synonym for "confused" as any other orientation.
A lot of so-called straight people are "bi-curious" in that they do some experimenting with the same sex. Kinsey says that technically makes you bisexual, but some people define you only as that if you've had some sort of long standing attraction or ongoing relationships with both sexes. Whatever.
But, it's only confusing if you don't know that some degree of bisexuality may well be the norm for humans.

Date: 2004-06-30 02:25 pm (UTC)And bisexuals sure seem to be the minority inside the minority - maybe not in the pure sense of the term, since indeed it seems bisexuality may be one of the norms for humans and we find more of them that people are comfortable with --I do believe in Kinsey's scale with some people being at the edge, some in the middle, and some others floating between them all though-- but in the sense that if straights frown upon gays, well everyone seems to frown up bi. It's simplifying the matter, but do you see what I mean?
I sometime joke I wish I were bi myself instead of gay, because that way I could really say it's not the package that attracts me, but really what is inside - that being said, considering the misunderstanding about bisexuality, maybe it's not such a bad thing.

Date: 2004-08-03 03:37 pm (UTC)I have to wonder how many people are afraid or ashamed of their bisexual tendencies (if as Kinsey says, they're so common) and that's why they treat openly bi people so shabbily.
I know it's something I had to come to terms with and until I did, it was something about myself that I felt very ambiguous about.
I've always had an attraction for women as well as men, perhaps not as much, but the first person I really fell deeply in love with was a woman, and I didn't quite see it for what it was at the time, and by the time I did, I also realized that although she loved me too, it wasn't in THAT way.
We're still great friends by the way. I seem to be able to do that with ex anythings, unless they don't want it.
But, having such a well, crushing experience, because hey, rejection is rejection, caused me to just put that aspect of myself away for a long long time. And because I also am attracted to men, I just went with that, because, hey, it's not only easier, but the next person I really fell in love with was my husband.
Fortunately, I met a man that likes(oh, who am I kidding, he thinks it's hot!) that about me and he's not exactly Mr. Completely Straight either. So he "gets it". I don't think he ever had a lover in the deep emotional sense that was male, but he sure messed around with a few in his teenage experimental years.
Phil's younger brother is bisexual, but with an decided leaning towards men(maybe a 4 or 5 on the Kinsey scale?), but I do think Phil is definitely more attracted to women.
