Because I can be incredibly easy - and easily entertained - I still can't believe that I get to hear Brendon singing in my telly whenever the Coca Cola ad is on! I had no idea Open Happiness was for the commercial, so imagine my surprise when I realised this was Brendon singing on my telly the first time I saw the ad!

Well, technically, I didn't see the ad that first time - not really. I was readind a fic with the tv on in the living room. Even though I was pretty focused on the story, the part of my brain that is apparently connected to Patd 24/7 realised Brendon was singing on aforementioned telly, so I sprang from my chair, slid to the living room and squeed at the screen, even though aforementioned ad was over. I almost gave Cookie a heart attack in the process. I am sorry for that, but I explained the commotion and she totally got it. Plus, she almost gives me a heart attack whenever she catches something Batman and/or Joker related, so.

Oh, so interesting story brought to you because the ad was on not five seconds ago :-p

I had a lovely day with tbf!Sandrine, her boyfriend and my nephew today. We brought him to a kid show which omg, was rubbish! But it was the kind of bad that turns hilarious, so we had a good time - just not the way we expected. Then again, Lucas had a blast so that's the only thing that counts. After the show we had a little stroll at the Buttes Chaumont park - it was such a gorgeous day, sunny and just gorgeous - before stopping at a little café. If that's not a great day, I don't know what is :-)

Unrelated, I'm reading Duma Key at the moment and I absolutely love it but man, it stresses the hell ouf of me! Which, yes, it's supposed to and I'm happy it does, but still... if I listened to myself I'd just go and read the last pages so that I knew how it's gonna end stop stressing out.

Hey, I just did the math and I've been a fan of King's for the last 17 years - or 18 if you consider I'll turn 30 in May. That's nice :-)

*slaps your hand* Hey! Don't read the ending! *g* I loved that one. It really reminded me of some of my favorites of his from years past.

And I did the math, too--if you count being told watered-down versions of his short stories at bedtime when I was three, then I've been a fan for about fifteen years! :P

'If I listened to myself' - I promise that I won't do that. I'll just suffer from the stress till the very last page *nodnod*

Stephen King as bedtime stories? Oh, that's awesome!

It reminds me of doing my own retelling of his stories for my six-year-old cousin back in the day, too. She loved it! Come to think of it, it was an interesting exercice for me; deciding how to tell the stories in such a way that they wouldn't traumatise a little kid :-)

DUma Key was amazing, definitley my favorite of the more recent Stephen King novels. Scary as hell, towards the end, of course. But worth it!

I think I have more years as a Stephen King fan than you. I first read him at age 11- Salem's Lot was the book. I was on a miserable trip to Virginia with my great aunt and uncle, and I found the book in a local store, bought it, and lost myself in it. Didn't really understand all of it. But I knew I had just found something special. So, that makes me a King fan for 25 years. Good God, I feel old!

You're the third person who loved Duma Key; it does make me very happy!

You have more years as a fan of his but that's not fair because you're seven years older than I am so you'll always be ahead *pout* But, hey, technically we began at basically the same age - though you started reading him at 11 and I was 12 when I did, so ok you win ;-)

I WIN!!!!!

Really, it doesn't matter in the long run, does it? Just as long as we love him, and he keeps writing, that's what matters. I was kind of disappointed in most of his later works, almost everything after Bag of Bones. But with Duma Key, I felt like he was back on track.

What's your favorite King book? I'm torn between The Stand and It. I can't really pick, they're both so amazing. What I especially love about It is that despite the horror, it's also a book about love and friendship and the power of both. So many people dismiss Stephen as a horror writer, but he's also a PEOPLE writer, ya know?

The Stand and It are my favourites too :-) I'm also a huge fan of The Dark Tower series, though I still need to get back to it - and it's been so long, I'll definitely need a refresher course lol

So many people dismiss Stephen as a horror writer, but he's also a PEOPLE writer, ya know?

Yes, yes! That's it exactly. Whenever someone - who obviously doesn't know his work - starts to dismiss him for the reason you mentioned, I can't ever help trying to set them right. Saying you don't love King because you don't like his style/writing/whatever is one thing, saying you don't like his work because it's 'just horror stories' always makes me want to defend the guy and his work, because it's always so much more than that. And it's not even all of his work, anyway!

Incidentally, this is a particular case when film adaptation comes in handy because I always mention The Green Line or The Shawshank Redemption and many people ignore who wrote the original stories. I just love seeing their looks when I tell them who's behind them :-)

DOn't forget Stand By Me, which was based on his novella The Body. The movie was amazing, the book was even better. Now that was a story about love and friendship. I cry when I read it, always.

Oh, Stand By Me! You're right, I shouldn't forget that one either *nods*

I see your comments have turned into Stephen King Appreciation Society, so I have to join in on the fun. ;D

Anyway! I hate that "they're just horror stories" argument and usually won't even bother with it (because if you really think a certain genre is somehow automatically worth less than others, I don't know what to say - and then there's the fact that, like you said, King is not just about horror). One of my favorite things about King's writing is how he describes friendship, especially between children, or grown men, or just people who've been thrown together due to weird circumstances. He has this thing about loyalty between friends that I really like.

And this all reminds me that I should read Lisey's Story already. I just finished Duma Key a while ago, actually. :D

Continuing with the Stephen King Appreciation Society: he is definitely one of my favorites - I love his characters, and his writing style. Whenever I read one of his novels, it's like coming back to a warm, familiar place: I know that I am going to love the characters (well, I have to admit that I have been disappointed by a couple of novels, but considering how much he writes, that's very okay). And I love to see the evolution in his writing - and of course I LOVED Duma Key! Oh, and his essay, On Writing? I found this to be one of the most touching non-fiction books I have read (now I feel like reading it again, dammit!)

I know that I am going to love the characters

Yes, I second that too. I love how he writes, not just the story itself but the characters too - which, ok, is supposedly part of the 'story itself' but you know what I mean.

I have to admit that I have been disappointed by a couple of novels, but considering how much he writes, that's very okay

Definitely a small ratio compared to the number of his books *nod*

I think King is the few authors whose books I want to read/read even when they're not fiction books.

Those were lovely comments to read, weren't they? Stephen King's Fangirls unite \o/

I know it won't come as a surprise - obviously - but I do second what you said *nod*

I have Lisey's Story waiting for me too, it's always good to have a new King somewhere for later read :-)
