Apparently, someone's cold is someone else's ticket for the Star Trek French premiere - or how I replaced [livejournal.com profile] ephyse tonight and went to the Festival Jules Verne, where I got to see the film three days before its official release \o/

ST:TOS will always hold a special place in my heart because, when it comes down to it, it was the very first show I got addicted to and the first fandom I fell for - decades before I even knew what a fandom was.

I watched the show religiously when I was a kid, got the video tapes - hee, remember video tapes? - bought many of the novels - in French and English, those books are some of the very first books I read in English that weren't for school. And, as I always say, technically one of the very first fanfics I wrote - again, years before I ever heard about fanfics - was ST:TOS. Also! The Very First Time I went on-line? The site I looked for was a Star Trek one. That makes for a lot of fannish firsts.

Anyway, all that to say, I was waiting for that film impatiently and I'm happy I finally saw it - despite the many scenes I found OTT and eye-rolling inducing, I liked it. And, hey, Star Trek, dude! It was fun, I got some nice surprises; all in all it still filled me with glee :-)

Now, though, I'm itching to get the first season of the show on DVD; I've been wanting it for ages but never got around to it. Maybe now is the right time *plans a little visit to amazon*

Oh, and unrelated to Star Trek but still about the Festival Jules Verne; we saw Gérard Depardieu. He received an award there. Even though I'm not a fan as such, he's still one of the most famous actors in French, so that was nice :-)

Maybe of more interest to the flist; Cookie was at the Grand Rex in the afternoon and took some delicious pictures of Jamie Bamber. Like, I don't think it was physically possible for her to be closer to the guy... I do hope she'll make a post soon-ish.

Ooh, jealous re: the movie! :-) The whole family is getting excited for it, so it's good to hear it didn't totally suck. :-)

Yeah, no, it didn't totally suck. Hopefully you'll agree lol

I wish they'd toned down many of the crackish scenes of the film but I liked it despite the crack, so it's all good :-)

OMG! Star Trek! ::green with envy!:: I'm glad to hear it's entertaining. I've been trying to keep my excitement to a manageable level so as not to be disappointed if it's not as good as I was hoping. So, I just want it to be a fun ride.

I realised I wasn't expecting anything - I just knew I HAD TO SEE IT OMG! - which might be the way to go and watch the film.

I'll be curious to see what you think of it; I know I found many scenes OTT and crackish and wish they'd toned it down but then I'm never a big fan of OTT'ness in the first place, so...

Still, I'll get the DVD as soon as it comes out, that's a given :-)

*is not jealous that you got to see the film early*

*not jealous not jealous not jealous not jealous*

And I see from the Jamie Bamber comment that I'm going to have to do another post one of these days. I seem to have succumbed to Battlestar Galactica (only after it went off the air, which is the same way I got started with Oz and Due South). Am presently inhaling the series at the rate of two episodes or more a night....

It's not everyday we get to see a film before many people; that was pretty sweet :-)

Lol Sometimes the way to go into a series is when it's gone off the air; you can get all the DVDs and inhale the whole show without the pressure of having to wait every week or, even worse, those loooongs months between end-of-season and new-seaon-premiere.

I'm still so behind with BSG, myself. Like, I think I just watched the first season *has shame*

Yes, that's it exactly! The delays from one season to the next aren't so bad for shows like The West Wing, but with something like Lost it just about kills you. When Lost ends after next season, and all the DVDs have been released, I'm going to sit down and watch the whole thing from start to finish, with just bathroom breaks and maybe the occasional nap. :-D

I'm not that far ahead of you on BSG; am just watching the second season (technically the second half of the second season - what the DVD calls Season 2.5).

I was thinking of buying the old ST myself. I never saw it *hides* but there are so many books written for this show and I LOVE - yes, in capital letters - tie-in novels!

But first, I need to finish buying SG-1! Only one season and Continuum to go *pumps fist*

It's been such a big part of my fannish experience when growing up that I'm always surprised when I realise many other people my age has never watched the show.

I'm not usually a big fan of tie-in novels but I know the ST ones are an exception. Likewise with SW. I remember reading many of the novels when I was a teenager.

And I couldn't resist, I got the first series on DVD *thanks play.com* It was shipped today, I can't wait!

Do you mean you're close to having all of the SG-verse on DVD? *is impressed*

Yup, I have S1-9 of SG-1 and Ark of Truth and S1-4 of SGA with S5 pre-ordered. I can't believe just how much I fell in love with SGA, I've never been this obsessed with SG-1.

The Stargate books are very good too. "Sacrifice Moon" by Julie Fortune is awesome, the first mission of SG-1!

It's so sweet when a show gets you by surprise like that; you never thought you would get along so well and you practically end up married together. As fannish feelings go, this one is a good one *nods*

*grins* I'm really glad an old ST fan liked it at least! I'm kinda dubious about the film, because ya know, do we really need another one? But still...going next weekend!

Oh, I did like it, but in spite of many things, not necessarily 'thanks to' them, if it makes sense. Or to be fair, there were many things I enjoyed but it's just that I can't get past the OTT'ness in American series/films sometimes... Subtle isn't a word they know.

I'm terribly dubious of the new movie. But then I've never understod the urge to remake old shows and have always preferred the original series to any of the later spinoffs (not to mention the horrible movies! though the one with the whales was fun :-)

Being dubious is the way to go, I think; usually it means you won't get too disappointed :-)

The film is OTT and crackish in many, many places: I keep thinking I liked it in spite of it, not the other way around, if you know what I mean?

And it gave me the push to get ST:TOS on DVDs. The first series is on its way to me as we speak *bounces*

Joyeux anniversaire!
