Sep. 2nd, 2010 01:41 pmI've been back at work for two little days but it feels as if I'd never gone on holiday, it's very weird. I'm guessing it's a way for our mind to protect itself and not feel too upset that the fun times are gone now? But because I started on a wednesday, it means tomorrow is the weekend already so the pain of losing my freedom is being kept to a minimum :-)
Onto LJ life, now. I can't say I'm surprised that LJ thought of joining the rest of the internet world by adding connect buttons to its entries. LJ follows the trends, as a living and evolving platform is supposed to, so that it doesn't get left behind. Having said that, just because I understand where it's coming from, doesn't mean I like it - on the other hand, just because I don't like something, doesn't mean it's evil. Obviously, the real problem I see - and this is where I do agree with everyone - is the 'flocked' breach. Doesn't their move defeat the whole purpose of having locked entries? So I do hope they'll change that part, at least.
Thing is, I like to keep my networks separate. I do have both a FB and Twitter account; I seldom use my FB account, though I do use my Twitter on a daily basis. Doesn't mean I ever (or intend to ever) link LJ to Twitter or vice versa; I always meant to keep those two accounts separate. I get different things from those different networks and that's how I like it. Which is why, even though I do understand the change and think it was even sorta overdue, I'm not overjoyed at the idea of people being able to link my entries over FB or Twitter. I don't think anyone could link me to my different on-line handles but that's not the point.
I guess I wish we had a choice, that they gave us an opt-out option. I know that I was over at blogspot this morning for work related business and when I was about to write a new entry there, I was asked if I wanted to add the 'share' buttons to the blog. So I don't know if it'll ask the question every time the user logs on, or if one click on 'I'm not interested' is enough and no-one would ever be able to share those entries unless the user changed their settings, but I like the idea of being asked. Which is odd when you think that I have no problem being "retweeted". But this comes down to the fact that I use LJ and Twitter for different things. I don't mind and assimilated the idea of 'RT' immediately, whereas it's not something I want on LJ. Maybe if I had another blog which I used differently from my LJ, I wouldn't mind the possibility of being cited and linked over at FB and Twitter. But that's not what I want here, is all. Different platforms, different uses, different needs, I guess.
So, anyway, I don't know if/when LJ will modify the thing, but in the meantime, I did add .b-repost-item, #fblo {display:none;} to my custom css...

Date: 2010-09-10 06:52 pm (UTC)Thing is, I don't think other blog platforms had any kind of problem with the thing; LJ is apparently different in how the fandom part of it usually takes everything that happens around here personally.
Having said that, I do firmly believe in giving the users a choice and that's where I wish they'd done things differently. Let's hope they'll change that part *fingers crossed* Or just fix the privacy breach issue, which was a major screw up, I agree.

Date: 2010-09-02 06:01 pm (UTC)I agree, I enjoy keeping LJ and FB separate from each other. LJ is certainly more exclusive IMHO. At least how I use it.

Date: 2010-09-10 06:57 pm (UTC)Things would be so much easier if each new feature came with an 'opt-out' option.
I'm hoping LJ will make some changes. We'll see...
