I'm here to (humbly) ask for your assistance, flist. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it but I’m attending a class on media sociology. As one of my assignments, I had to pick a show (well, I picked a tv show but I could have chosen a film or a video game etc.) and a topic for an essay. I went for Supernatural, and because I’m sort of immersed in the fan community on LJ, I chose to do my study on the show reception with a focus on fan culture, interests and activities. You know how many philistines think that people who watch tv are just passive viewers? My essay wouldn’t be about that.

Anyway, to help me with a part of my essay, I’d like to ask you (if you’re so inclined) to fill out this poll. I know you’re often sollicited for that kind of thing but I hope you won’t mind taking a little of your time to help me out.

Disclaimer: I’ve been in fandom long enough to know that things can get out of hands without the OP ever dreaming of meaning any offence so let me just say that I’m doing this poll in good faith and I do hope none of questions will offend anyone. Also, even though I’m making the poll public, I won’t use your name/pseudo when I’ll be writing my essay, neither will I link to your LJ or anything of the like.
Chances are I’ve forgotten some important topics or asked some things clumsily, this is a blanket apology; I’ll do better next time, promise.

FYI: Whenever you feel the need to expand on your answers, don’t hesitate to do so in the comments. Also, I’ll probably phrase some of the questions differently when I’ll deal with that part of the essay so just ignore me if I appear a bit familiar.

CW Promotion: Honestly, I don't really pay attention to network advertising anymore. I watch most of my TV off the internet these days.

Enjoyment relies on favourite character: If the episode is good, I really don't care, but I do get more excited before seeing an episode if one of my favourite secondary characters is going to be in it.

Critical of the show (I can't remember if I answered comment option on this one): I am slightly critical and I try to figure out the mysteries, but I'm not all "that's impossible because ..."

In the SPN fandom: I watch the show, I enjoy the show immensely, but I am not really part of the greater fandom. It's a bit...intense.

Been watching Spn since the pilot aired in 2005 (well, since it aired in England in January 2006).

Started because Mum was a Smallville fan and like Jensen Ackles. She thought we'd enjoy it together.

Watched S1 and S2 multiple times, S3 and 4 once each and spatterings of S5 and S6.

Not a clue how CW promotes the show!

Used to love Sam and Dean, now the only characters I care about are Bobby, Balthazar and Ellen when she's around.

Prefer the monster of the week.

As you know: I like shows that I can lightheartedly mock. Spn used to be perfect for that, it was fun and silly. Nowadays I just don't have that enjoyment and only really dissect it.

In fandom: Have written fic, read fic, written reviews, commented on friend's reviews, belonged to Spn comms, run Spn comms (no longer), been to cons: in my own country, went to SDCC (if that counts as abroad), 'official cons', fan-run cons, have organised a fan-run con, bought merchandise, and follow Sebastian Roche on twitter.

These days the fannish Spn activity is only with friends in RL that still watch it. :)

How much are you involved in the SPN fandom? You didn't have an option for fanart which is sort of a huge part of fandom.

And, I don't read reviews because, IDK people can be such downers about everything.

The 'why I'm watching' answer:

It's a show that's funny, touching, heartbreaking, gritty and realistic even when dealing with supernatural/non-realistic elements, and above all, it's a story about love, family, devotion, and all the good and bad stuff that comes from that. Nothing is black or white, nothing is easy, good intentions ALWAYS lead to Hell, but if you stick by your loved ones, fight for the things you believe in, you might make a difference in the big picture, no matter how small you think you are. And also: there's no end to a person's strength- one can take incredible amounts of abuse, all sorts of it, and still pick themselves up and live/breathe/fight another day. We are incredible, fascinating creatures.

Oh, right-- I've sent postcards in that 'spn_postcard' community/campaign, haven't gone to any cons because they're far away and I'm not willing to spend SO MUCH money on that, and I keep my fan activities mostly online simply because there are no SPN fans in my vicinity (that I know of).

Do I know the feeling! I don't know if it's something inherent to every fandom but I always felt like it was kinda specific to the SPN fandom. Or maybe it's just due to the fact that it's such a big fandom.
