Nov. 2nd, 2003 09:48 pmI am so spamming my LJ today! What the hell is happening to me? I swear I'm not a compulsive spammer, it's just that today LJ is calling me over and over, and I can't say no *sob*
[/drama queen]
You know what I'd *really* really love? When a Gen story actually heads toward, or actually ends up with a Het pairing, I'd like to be notified. To tell the truth, a Gen story with a Het pairing isn't --IMO-- Gen. It's Het. Pure and simple. As a slasher, I'd *really* really like to know beforehand. Also, when a story contains a threesome, I'd like to know if one of the partners is female, cos in that case, it brings some Het in the story, and here again, I'd like to see the infamous Het warning somewhere.
I think some writers should try to think of us slashers' sanity. A slasher is fragile and should be handled with care, hence the warning so that our little slashy brain doesn't fry on the spot at the realization there's going to be some m/f involved. Let me explain, I love rape, abuse or slave fics, I love dark stories, I'm addicted to BDSM theme, I'm hooked on kinky stories, I can even read bestiality, but I can't handle Het, this is too much for me, this is my main squick. See? *points at previous list* Fragile, that's what I am! *bambi eyes*
It's odd because, as a slasher, if I even thought of *trying* to label a story Gen even though said fic ends with a beautiful m/m pairing, I would have a beautiful war flame waiting for me around the corner, and I would have only myself to blame, really. So why does it seem to be different with Het?
NB: This is not an attack on Het writers btw. I don't like Het, but I don't have anything against the genre in itself. It's just that I'm so not interested in reading those. Also, I have a question. See, I heard someone say that if you didn't like slash it meant you were a homophobe, so, seeing I hate Het, does that make me a heterophobe? I'm a little worried here [/sarcasm] Plus, my best friend is straight you know! [/cliché]
Oh and also, I'm being the adorable lemming again, so here the Map meme. If you want to add your own adorable self --if you're not already on the map-- go ahead, thanks *g*
And lastly, some big and loving {{{{Hugs}}}}} for my
babycakesin, who's feeling better apparently *g* I was ready to wait patiently, but I'm definitely glad to see I might not have to, after all *g* Love ya, woman, don't forget that *schnuzzles*

Date: 2003-11-02 02:20 pm (UTC)That's how I see it. Smarm is my favorite Gen category --or sub-category, as you want. Not to say that Gen never has adult theme or anything, I read Gen with difficult subject as rape or sexual abuse, but to me, the bottom line is, the stories involve Jim/Blair or Jack/Daniel *friendship*. Well, them or any other character you happen to meet in a fic of course. It's just that the few Gen I read are *only* in TS and SG, because those fandoms are pretty intense even in Gen, and the friendship between them can be really intense as well, or pretty sweet or any other level you want *g*

Date: 2003-11-02 01:29 pm (UTC)*sigh*
but see, i asked some people that. i see Gen as NO PAIRING. friendship yes. smarm yes. but many ppl see Gen as how it is in the show. e.g. they'll see jack//sam ust as Gen. [GAAAAAAH!] when for me it would definitely be a het fic.
and het is my main squick too. and i know a lot of slashers who are like us.
...and like someone else said here, they think it's ok not to put warnings for Het but Slash automatically needs warnings. they're so wrapped up with what the society would think is 'normal' that they don't realise some people actually see things the OPPOSITE way.

Date: 2003-11-02 02:26 pm (UTC)I see Gen exactly like you : friendship with no pairing involved. And I sure like smarm, but the bottom line is, there is NO pairing! No slash pairing, no het pairing!
And I just think theory of Gen equals canon, therefore Jack/Sam UST would be Gen as pretty weird. Jack/Sam, in any form is Het to me *shakes head*
Most of the slashers I know are liks us, they just can't read Het. In my case, those are the majority. Now though, with my f-list, I'm talking with people who're both slashers *and* hetters, that's an interesting experience lol
Like we said, we don't have a problem with het, but please, Gen is Gen... a pairing involved in the story just stops this fic from being Gen. This is pretty disgusting, when you think you're reading a nice smarm and then BAM! A m/f pairing just knocks you on the ass! Yuck *eg*

Date: 2003-11-04 02:10 pm (UTC)I'm developing a need for long and detailed warnings, right now, believe me! And I think the only Het I read and enjoyed was in "Too serious, too soon", and only Pepe could make me keep on reading a fic that started this way! lol
Maybe I should have written the author, you're right. But I have to admit, seeing how people on-line can be susceptible, I can't help thinking it was a good thing I didn't say anything! Me a coward? Maybe *shakes head* Next time, I'll write the writer, yeah, cos it's just common courtesy, after all. *I* wouldn't labeled a fic as Gen if the plot involved around a m/m pairing.
Hey btw, when are you going to have your own L? *g* I asked the same thing to Alison... well, I'm always asking you the same question, anyway lol

Date: 2003-11-05 11:06 am (UTC)it WOULD tick me if a gen story ended in slash. then it's not gen, it's PRE-SLASH. so why the hell is there no pre-het?!?! blah.
or maybe they're jealous about the smarm. ha.
Thanks a bunch, babe
Date: 2003-11-02 11:30 pm (UTC)I had warned you on Friday when we were both on line that I would need 48 hours to adjust. And look: it's Monday morning, it's 8:30, I'm still in bed and it feels great! no guilt, no sickness... Me happy :D
I needed time, that was all. Thanks for giving me time. *huggles her Mousey*
Now I can go back to my normal life: boring you to death with U2, reading NC-17 (downloaded some stuff that look really cool non-con... although cool and non-con in the same sentence is kinda weird), whining about my car (yes, the tires need fixing), hunting down icons... Routine! :P
Re: Thanks a bunch, babe
Date: 2003-11-04 02:12 pm (UTC)I didn't mind giving you time. As long as I knew it was what you wanted... and hail to normal life, and U2 and NC-17 and whining about your car. Although, I'd prefer for you not to have any problem with it, mind you... oh and let's not forget hunting down icons.
Hail to routine, too *g*

Date: 2003-11-03 08:40 am (UTC)And yes, I'm too one of these fragile slasher-souls who need a het-warning to prevent getting traumatized. *g*
Which story did you scare so much? ;-)

I don't remember the titles. I stopped reading as soon as I realized where it was heading, and deleted the whole thing. The only thing I can tell you is that the stories were SG ones
