Pt 1 of the Lost Premiere
Sep. 24th, 2004 01:51 pmFirst and foremost, and since it's now official :
Congratulations to Babycakes!
I'll wait for her to make the announcement --hope you'll do it fast-- because I want her to be the first to say it, but I'm just so proud of her achievement that I couldn't totally wait, so there *sheepish look*
Also Hallmarks? Have the tackiest cards that ever lived. It's nothing new but it cracked me up! lol
Now on the fannish front :
I didn't watch the premiereearly this morning last night after all - I suddenly couldn't keep my eyes open. But I did it this morning, so I didn't have to wait that long. And anyway, considering that my living in France would have prevented me from watching that show before... well, forever, I still watched it soon enough, know what I mean?
So yes, I feel pretty smug about the fact that I was able to watch the episode after all, and it's such a shame no one of my friends around here even know about that new series, because I would have bragged and bragged - as it is, Babycakes is the only to know about it, and of course since she was the one who gave me the link where I could download the ep - so it doesn't exactly count as RL friends knowing about it lol
Also it was real cute, because the girl who uploaded the premiere on her server apparently received the visit of pretty much all Europe --and countries outside Europe too, since I think I saw people from Singapore and Australia-- on her LJ thanking her for uploading the file. You could see an endless list of comments with : I'm from UK/Germany/Finland/Norway/France/Italy/InsertLostDeprivedCountry and I'm so grateful for what you did - because we all truly were. We Europeans are sure TV shows deprived sometimes - or more precisely, we have to wait so long to get the series we want, see? lol
So, I watched Lost and it wasn't what I imagined at all. Not in a bad way though, but I was surprised to realise that it wasn't a 'realistic' series about the survival of 48 people on a lost island, but a sort of mystery/fantastic series with apparently ugly monsters/things lurking in the shadows... so to speak. Didn't know there would be some The Lost World vibes in that story - so it surprised me all right, but sure enough, it spices up the whole thing.
Though the characters themselves spice up the story enough IMHO, because they're all damn fascinating - it's just the beginning and you're already wondering about the motivations of pretty much all the main characters and they're not exactly all inspiring trust.
Speaking of which, what's the deal with Charlie? Man, I just don't know what to think of him - he's hiding something, isn't he... or is he? And what's his obsession with the bathroom? Why were several flight attendants calling and running after him just before the plane started dancing the salsa? Or doesn't it mean anything and I was made to believe it did just to confuse me? Well in any case, it's certainly working lol And in any case bis, he still succeeded in being one of the characters that interested me the most.
And okay, let's speculate - so here it is, we have Charlie who apparently has a very strong relationship with the plane's bathroom, which as pairings go isn't exactly that attractive nor that sexy, so we have to find another reason.
If we could eventually think that he wanted to use the bathroom because he was sick just before the plane took a dive, as we're apparently supposed to think, it's not exactly convincing, as in it's not - in particular compared to his behaviour afterward : he insists on joining Jack and Kate even though it's clear it's not really because he wants to help - sure, it could have been because he wanted to do something as opposed to just sit on the beach but then, that theory was officially destroyed when we found him in the bathroom again and we were suddenly brought back to the little scene on the place - so we could believe he was actually looking for something.
So it's something that is small enough to be hidden, and huh precious enough to need to be hidden. And suddenly, I'm thinking... what if he was a drug addict and he was actually going back for his drugs? Oh boy *blink* That would sure give an interesting twist to the story.
I really really love Kate as well. She's terrified like the others are, but she's definitely holding it together and is brave and assertive, and she does what she has to do without blinking - I was so impressed when she helped Jack at the very beginning, not everybody would have done it I think, and I love how she was the one who said they had to go back and find Jack when Charlie didn't seem that much in a hurry to. She definitely has some strong leadership abilities - like Jack. I guess that's why they're already trying to push some Jack/Kate vibes on the way?
Jack is... well he doesn't interest me that much so far. Oh don't get me wrong, he's great. He sure took things in his hands and he has lots of valuable knowledge and everything - and after all, we enter the series with him, but he's not the type of characters I'm usually attracted to. I'm not going to say he's the typical hero and stereotyped character because it seems none of those characters really are stereotypical nor one-dimensional --though Shannon didn't exactly strike me as multi-layered-- but I think that even though I'll like him I won't exactly love him.
I liked Sayid though we didn't see a lot of him yet, admittedly. Right now, he's with Kate and Charlie part of the Triade, the three characters I enjoyed the most.
But hey, since it's just the premiere, I know I have to be careful because if distrusting a character almost on sight --it's not even the second part of the premiere, after all-- would be a mistake, trusting another would be as well. One way or the other, it's just too early to know anything about them - all I know is that I'm impatient and curious to learn more about them, their motivations, their backstories and so forth and so on - should be a nice ride *g*
Notice how I didn't mention slash? Well no I didn't forget about it lol I was just trying to write a review without being my slasher self but seriously? I think I'll be slashing Sayid/Charlie. And I know, I know - [mimicks] 'Why are you slashing a show when it's not even a show yet, just a first part of a premiere?'[/mimicks] Why? Because I want to, thanks. I'll revise the pairing afterward if I want to/need to, but I decided I liked those two together, so there.
Something that cracks me up is how many actors we know in that episode. It's like When Shows Collide x 10 : Look! That's Augustus Hill from Oz! And that guy, he played in Alias and Millenium... oh and that one! He was in yesterday's Smallville episode, talk about a coincidence and Jack, hey but that's Matthew Fox! And and... okay you get the picture. Yeah, can you tell that the only thing I knew about Lost was that Dominic Monaghan played in it? lol
Anyway, I can't wait for the girl to upload Pt2 - and I'd be so eternally grateful if she did follow up with the idea and did all the other episodes. She said she'll try - let's cross our fingers *crosses fingers* I'm already grateful for the premiere anyway, that was wonderfully nice of her.
Oh yeah almost forgot. What about the dog? Are we supposed to think it's evil or something in that regard? Let's get real, this is an American show - the dog will be fine. Hey, he may well be the last one to make it alive, for we all know that TPTB in the US will more likely kill a human --even a child-- in their movies than kill a dog - unless they want to surprise me? lol
[Edit] A last thing, then - what's with the French? In the trailer for next week's episode, when Sayid is using the talkie walkie, we hear French on the other side of the 'line' - the voice definitely says Je vais essayer d'aller jusqu'au bout.
Oh and it's been some time since I pimped
ship_manifesto so let's remedy the situation and let's mention the OT3 Week over there. Threesome essays galore - definitely interesting and yummy *eg*
And a last thingfor now : I saw it first on
kennedy_bowman's LJ and got curious. There wasn't exactly The Butterfly, but I just thought it was funny --private joke and all-- so here :
babycakesin
And speaking of private joke. Terri? Sorry couldn't resist :

You don't see? That's a poodle! lol

Date: 2004-09-24 09:02 am (UTC)hum, I meant, in a calm and composed way: I kind of enjoyed it. I can't wait to see what the deal is with Charlie! As for Jack (hell, before he even said his name I knew he would be called 'Jack' - do you realize the number of 'Jack's heroes there are on TV/movies? I'll make a list someday) - anyway, as for Jack, I like him a lot. The girl is obviously a Mary Sue (if a girl in fanon can be called a Mary Sue), drooling after Jack (yeah, we all are, but it's not the point: she didn't even worry about Charlie!)
yeah, what about the dog? What about HG Wells? (I got Tripod vibes at one moment - do you remember the tv series when we were kids about tripods monsters?) What's the Toe Painting Bitch's problem? And the Eating Oranges Guy? So odd! And the Japanese husband? probably beating his wife on the side too.
we have the dog, we have the pregnant woman, we have the African-American child, we have the overweight nice guy, we have accents, we have cheerleaders... may the show begin! *giggles*

Date: 2004-09-24 09:17 am (UTC)In a composed and calm way, yes I agree with you, that premiere was nice.
Yeah, the guy had to be called Jack, now that I think of it - because each time you have a leader or a strong guy, it's a Jack. Let's call that the Jack syndrome.
As for Kate - it's so unfair when you think of it. I mean, no one even thought of calling Jack a Marty Stu, but the first thought that came to your mind when you saw Kate acting like she did --and I'm sure you're no the only one-- was 'Mary Sue'. Not fair *shakes head* What I disliked though is the whole het vibe, because it felt like of course Kat had to pin over him. They couldn't let her be all leadery and strong if they didn't make her defer to Jack in some way, ie in an eventual romantic way.
Eating Orange Guy creeps me out. Shannon --Toe Painting Bitch-- and her brother Boone seem to have a very... huh odd relationship. You didn't me think incesty, not me!
And I think that as soon as we have the dog, we could say the show was on the road. Ah, how we love those American clichés! lol

Date: 2004-09-24 09:28 am (UTC)well, of course she had to act all 'jaaaaaack' - otherwise the show would have been about their conflictual relationship, when we all know they'll end up in bed anyway. And so far, I haven't seen any sign than Jack in interested in her, so that's good. Me.love.Charlie.
Do you think he could have been hiding drugs in the toilets before the crash and he went to retrieve it afterwards?

Date: 2004-09-24 09:34 am (UTC)Me.love.Charlie too.
And that's exactly what I started to think too! lol I just wrote a comment with some mild-lengthy explanation about it lol We're just so good *sigh*

I went to the Abc site and watched some videos on the cast and the characters, and it's apparently officiliased, Charlie's problems with drugs - am looking forward to see how they're going to play with the theme.
And I've heard that the premiere had around 18 millions viewers - which is like wow, yeah lot of people all right *blink* And that's not including all those people on-line who got their hands on the episode lol
