Okay first things first - I uploaded Lost 1x05 at YSI. Wanna download it? What are you waiting for? *g*
Second, the commercial breaks. Don't know why but I noticed the cuts more than I used to the previous times and it really feels like I wouldn't enjoy Lost so much with those bloody commercial breakswhich is a lie but I'm going for a punching effect so my saying I wouldn't enjoy LOST so much should tell you how much I'd hate those bloody commercial breaks if I did have them. Also, how a human being can develop any kind of real attention span with like five or six breaks for a fourty-minute show is beyond me. And seriously, why do they insist on referring to all those shows as sixty-minute drama. Stop doing that! Your episodes last fourty-minutes... not sixty. Your commercials do last twenty minutes though, yes.
Third, as usual, a Mouse review for I developed a kink for writing reviews - I have so many kinks, I thought what's one more? *shrug* Follow the White Rabbit. And btw? Lamest joke ever, but I won't even apologise.
Some random observations to being with : this episode had an odd feel to it --no, I mean seriously, more than usual-- but hey, maybe it had something to do with, you know, the Supposedly Dead Guy Walking and Looking All Creepy!
Also? Apparently we're looking for a nice pattern here : we first had OMGWTF CREEPY CREATURES EATING PEOPLE11!!1 Then OMGWTF POLAR BEAR11!!1 ensued and OMGWTF WHEELCHAIR11!!1 happened next. Then finally we had OMGWTF DEAD MAN WALKING AND LOOKING CREEPY11!!1 aka OMGWTF EMPTY COFFIN OF DOOM11!!1 with eventually a honored mention for OMGWTF SCARY DOLLS11!!1 Though I'm aware that I may have been the only one who didn't like those dolls, OMGWTF I HAVE DOLLS ISSUES11!!1
Uh yeah *cough*
Where was I? Ah yes. The episode - technically, I shouldn't have liked it so much since it was Jack's episode but I actually truly enjoyed it. Why? Because this eppy brought me vulnerable!Jack and angsty!Jack and sobbing!Jack and suddenly our little Marty Stu didn't look so Marty Stuish anymore, because hey, he has a real and complex personality and he's woe-worthy and boy he's crying!
So yeah, our little Jack Sheppard --and seriously the man is called Jack.Sheppard! I mean come on!! Mind, I don't know about the real spelling but still!-- was getting so much more interesting in my eyes. I just don't like invincible and strong and invulnerable and without-any-emotion heroes/characters. I usually don't like leader!characters because of those traits. I never did, even when I was a kid so at least I'm consistent and coherent with myself *g* I loved Superman so much because of the green kryptonite, I loved Batman because of his humanity etc etc... So yeah, back to Jack? I really liked him in this episode - the only time when I lost interest? Was during his little speech at the end. I don't know why, I mean he's technically saying some beautiful things and he's being in charge again and being all leader-ey *trails off* Oh wait, I just answered my own question!
This is paradoxical because I do understand how any group needs to have a structure and how you need to have people take charge of things and even more so in that particular situation. So I'm not against all type of taking-charge characters --and after all I love Kate-- but it's just that I don't find them interesting as far as characters go...
Locke now? This man is just... I don't know what to do with him, but I do know I'm really frustrated with the guy because why doesn't he just tell us exactly what he saw? I mean I saw the heart of the island and it's... beautiful is telling us more than everything we heard so far but at the same time, it only brings more questions, which I know is the point, but that's also not the point. Because yeah me needs more!!! And all right, you're giving hints and piece of advice here and there but it's not enough.
Speaking of him. When we saw his hands sneaking on Jack to save him at the top of the cliff? It scared me like you wouldn't believe. I gasped when I saw those hands... I just thought it would be something real scary - like Mr Daddy for instance, and Mr Daddy was creeping me big time. He even beat Locke on my creepy-o-meter. Was meant to be scared like that, I suppose but even if I wasn't? It still worked. Definitely.
So this island... is it playing with what is inside our favourite guys' minds? First, Walt's polar bear in the comic then the polar bear goes live in the jungle... second, Locke's fervent wish to walk again then, well, his walking again... third, Jack's obvious unresolved issues with his dad and his dad literally appearing out of nowhere etc... In those particular cases, sorta feels like they're being given what they were hoping for or imagining, but then... Rose should have had her husband back and a rescue boat should have appeared out of nowhere by now, right? And they wouldn't lack food or water. Unless the island decides what to make appear *blink* Unless this has nothing to do whatsoever with the real plot. So yeah #1 could have been a nifty coincidence meant to confuse us, #2 one of those scientific/medical miracles that happen now and then and #3 Jack hallucinating, period.
There's also something else. The coffin being empty when it really really shouldn't have beenomg should mean that the dead don't really stay dead on that island, right? So the dead aren't really dead. Following that little idea, what if it also means we can't exactly trust the living to be alive? *worries lower lip* Unless the corpse was never in that coffin to begin with? But where is it for God's sake??
Oh boy thatshowissoconfusing *worships madly*
Though again, it wouldn't explain all the weird shit happening all over the place and in a way, it could also feel like a cope-out somehow, so I just don't know if I can believe that theory. Since I decided to go 100% spoiler-free for this show --preview for next episodes excluded, but they don't really count for me-- I don't know if some serious hints have been offered already. And this isn't me asking btw, I still don't want to know *g*
Didn't speak of Charlie yet did you notice? But he was more in the background again. Though each time I saw him, I got this huge smile on my face because I just love him to pieces, did I mention that already? I love seeing him with with Hurley too. Those two together? Are teh cute. And even enjoyed Charlie's scenes with Claire tremendously even though I could hear all the Charlie/Claire shippers sing and dance madly all around lol We also got nurturing!Charlie when he was taking care of Claire and cheering her up and just being his charming self, but also aggressive-protective!Charlie when he started his fight with Boone, and how cool was that when Sayid stopped him btw. Also felt like a nice situation reversal. Here was Sayid trying to stop a fight when so far, he was the one kinda being busy being in fights *g* So anyway, all in all, even though we didn't exactly see a lot of Charlie, when we did, it was of the good.
Oh and something that never fails to amuse me is how they all wander in the jungle far from the beach all the time but apparently never get --and forgive the pun-- lost. Wish I could do that myself lol
To sum it up? Stillmadlyinlovewiththatshow!
Now it's 2.50 am and I think I'm going to go to bed because I foresee a pretty tired student going to class today. But I couldn't not watch Lost. I've been waiting all day to download it and since I wasn't home for the most part of the day and since we celebrated my dad's 50th birthday tonight, I didn't have time to do it earlier. And re; my dad? It was just the five of us but he was spoiled! It felt like Christmas, only the pyramid of presents was just for one person *g* He seemed to really love them, so I'm a happy camper *g*
Ohhh and GIP btw, made by
crazybutsound. New York, New York is a favourite yaoi of mine *g* Aren't Kain and Mel lovely? *happy sigh*

Date: 2004-10-21 06:31 pm (UTC)You forgot to mention the texty slash! The Jack/Boone! It wrote itself! They were half naked in the WATER, all wet and pretty and Jack was practically groping Boone to "keep him afloat" even though Boone's a lifeguard. Now dammit, give me some more Jack/Sawyer.
And I can't believe the Jack Sheppard thing. I think we should go with the Sheppard spelling since it conjures up pretty images.

Date: 2004-10-23 01:00 pm (UTC)Jack/Boone was like all over the place indeed. I mean come on, the message was clear : Jack chose to save his lover instead of chosing the Female We Didn't Know Anything About - that's a declaration of love!

Date: 2004-10-21 09:00 pm (UTC)Oh, I am so the vanilla girl! I love Jack. *g* Give me noble and vulnerable every time - some flaws are cool, even desirable, but they have to be *sympathetic* flaws. and "Marty Stu" - lol - did you make that up? What about Claire? So far she qualifies for saint-hood - once that baby's born they're probably both going to have halos. *g*
And Jack/Boone, man - I agree, I think the writers said - hey, let's do a slash fodder episode! - not only the aforementioned half-naked and wet ocean rescue, but we get Jack choosing Boone over drowning chick, and the whole "Why did you rescue me?" scenario, which in my world ended a whole lot differently. *g*
And getting "lost" in the jungle - lol - after running around blindly, falling off a cliff, and then running around some more in the dark, I was thinking, "good luck getting back to the beach, dude." but apparently superJack has a super sense of direction as well.
y'know, your observation about the empty coffin, and that maybe some of them are actually dead is seriously freaking me out. I didn't think of that. Yow.
I am so loving this show! Thanks for posting - again! :-)

Date: 2004-10-23 01:07 pm (UTC)And I swear I didn't even make that up - Marty Stu does exist - Well, I think *g* That's how I call those male Mary Sue anyway, sounds nice, huh? lol
Oh and re:Claire - I can't help thinking they'll either kill her when she'll give birth or kill her baby, so somehow she's like already angstyandwoe-worthy, ya know? lol
Re: the dead theory. Like I said I don't know I can believe it or if I do I'm not sure it wouldn't be too easy, but still I can't help thinking about it... and it sorta freaks me out anyway lol
I'm glad you're enjoying the show - I love squeeing with other Lost fans *g*

ps: where's your icon from?

Date: 2004-10-27 04:25 am (UTC)It's from Cold Case and more precisely from the episode Volunteers, which I was rambling the other day *g*
Cold Case and Lilly Rush --one of the main investigators and the woman I have a major crush on-- made it to my interest list and when I saw this icon, I couldn't resist *g*

I totally agree about the dolls. This scene was the scariest!

Date: 2004-10-25 11:14 am (UTC)Lol! you know what? I can believe in polar beers out of their natural surroundings, in horrible beasts eating pilots, in transmitters working for 16 years, in medical shocks making a paralitic walk again, but I can't believe in risen dead people.
But maybe you'll be proved right *g*
