Lost 1x06 - House of the Rising Sun
Oct. 29th, 2004 12:34 amI'm not going to beat around the bush here, so :
House of the Rising Sun, or How the Mouse Almost Constantly Bounced and Squeed for Fourty-two Minutes, by the Mouse.
Okay... before I even try to think of writing something coherent, I need to do something, so if you allow me I'll just SQUEE ALL AROUND THE PLACE BECAUSE OMFG! CHARLIE! I mean, no wait! Charlie! The angst - the cuteness - the angst - the crying - the guitar - the best lines ever - the junkiness... THE storyline. FINALLY. I thought I was going to cry from joy, I... and he...
*hyperventilates*
*pulls herself together*
*fails*
It wouldn't be an irrational post of squee if I could just pull myself together, would it?
So --> AND the flirting! And my brand new OTP, and OMG Locke/Charlie *dies* I mean yeah sure Sayid/Charlie but, but... no, Locke/Charlie is my new black! I just can't - no, seriously. Maybe I'm having two OTPs for Lost, yeah that's it - does anyone have something to say about that? *glares* Locke/Charlie - squeee *bouncing* And if you prefer Locke-Charlie? Also works for me! As long as they're both in the picture *nodnod* But know what? I would loooooooooove to have a Locke/Charlie icon now *wide eyes*
*tries to pull herself together again*
Okay *pants* Okay, I'm good. I'm alright. I'll just... take a deep breath, that's what I'll do. I mean, it's not as if I'd been waiting for that kind of episode from the very first episode, right? It's not as if it's been a little more than a month since I've been patiently waiting for that arc to begin... So yeah, that's right, I'll just take a deep breath - and I'll sound, you know, normal.
*takes deep breath*
*opens eyes*
So... where was I? *blink* Oh yeah. House of the Rising Sun.
*clears throat*
This episode is as of today my favourite of the sixth. I'll cherish itfor all time. Though I'm aware that next week's episode should become First Favourite so HotRS will become a Second Favourite - or maybe not exactly Second but First and a Half... yeah, I like that.
So anyway. Let's try to be organised and un-squee-ey to make a sorta, you know, organised and not insane review.Yeah, right!
First, the Sun storyline. Well, that was really interesting. I truly loved it. I was also pretty happy because it showed my theory about those two was right. I always said there was resentment on both parts - that it was some sort of resentment on Jin's side more than real hatred or pure meaness. I mean, I always thought something bad had happened between them that made them both so wary of each other - though I thought maybe she'd cheated on him, which is why he was so very insecure and bastard-ey with her, which of course was no excuse, but could have been a reason of some sort. And I was right - but it was more complex than what I thought, which pleased me a lot.
I felt rather sad for Jin. Seemed like he'd sold his soul to the devil because of his love for Sun and it totally backfired and he got badly burnt. That was such a prove of love to me - he wanted to love her like he thought she needed to, and he wanted to take care of her and give her everything... when all she needed was... him, pure and simple.
That things went from bad to worse and finally made them so at odds with each other was unfortunately to be expected and made the whole situation even sadder. The only thing I was afraid of was to find out he was violent toward her. I mean, when she told Michael that Jin has a bad temper... I didn't like the sound of that, even if it could just be applied to others, and not her. I mean, the only one we saw getting violent was her when she slapped him - and he didn't slap her back. Though unfortunately as time passed, it could have been what happened, and why she decided to leave. Then again, it could be that she just couldn't bear the situation anymore, to see the man she once loved turning into... this. Besides, she doesn't seem so eager to abandon Jin, she could have taken advantage of the whole situation to break free. Not exactly space-wise, because hel-Lo 'island' but still...
Thing is, I just... would hate it so much if Jin was a real bastard without even the slightest redeeming quality. I can't really believe he has nothing to give anymore because... well because of the scene at the airport actually. The flower scene was really sweet. Like he never forgot how it was in the beginning and was telling her... But more than that, because of her deciding to stay. I mean, she chose him in the end... that has to mean something. Would have she decided to stay if she'd known there was nothing to save in their relationship? She seems strong enough and motivated enough not to stay with someone who was really bad to her. So yeah.
But in any case, Sun's story - well, theirs was really sad *sigh* Oh btw, the English speaking thing? Wasn't a surprise, which is why I don't develop here *g* But that was a nice touch anyway - they also gave us a real good explanation as to why she didn't say she spoke it in the first place, which was actually the thing I was curious about. She was still hiding it from her hubby. Works for me, thanks lol
Re: the airport scene. I just love it when we see a same scene from a different angle. Like we knew it was the scene we saw last week's with Jack pleading about his dad's coffin and everything but we were seeing it from Sun and Jin's angle this time. It looks like this huge puzzle and we're finding all the pieces one step at a time *g*
The Kate/Jack thing now? Man, she embarrassed me when she got all sulkey after realising Jack hadn't been thinking of her ass or of jumping her bones, after all. Because, that's what it was, right? She's all over him all the time and he seems to eventually know it but without caring at all, which makes me smile - but embarrasses me too on her behalf. Actually.... I didn't care that much for Kate today.
And not that I want to go all sequiturey on you, but her bra is so un-sexy that I couldn't even drool over her when she pulled her shirt off *sigh* Wish they made Shannon show even more skin, I bet she has sexy undies... but uh... I'm digressing here right? And entering the Realm of the Very Shallow too, so yeah I'll shut up *cough*
Btw, the whole "Ooooh evil bees trying to crawl under our shirts, let's take aforementioned shirts off" things was SO lame! But I guess I'd have appreciated it more if it had been Shannon? So I'll just shut up again *re-cough*
Speaking of Shannon and incidentally of Boone? Their fans musn't have been happy campers, though for the ones of the Shannon/Boone persuasion, I think the explanation could be quite pleasing. I mean, if we didn't see them it was because they were too busy fucking each other. Seems so obvious. No, I'm not turning into a shipper, but seriously...
Though hey back to Kate - when we realised she hadn't followed Jack? Was a good moment. Be your own woman, woman!
[Edit: Something I forgot to mention. Am wondering if their slipping up in two isn't going to have some repercussion of sort *is curious*]
Now, I'll talk about Locke/Charlie *bouncing* Or Charlie, then Locke then... Locke/Charlie.
How much did I love it when I realised the episode would be half-Sun and half-Charlie? A lot? Well, if you're the queen of understatement, I suppose that's how you'd describe it. I was thrilled, ecstatic... enthralled? I really thought the episode would evolve around Sun only, and I was ready to catch some tiny Charlie scenes here and there and be happy with them - so when I got more, and more of Charlie it was almost too good for this Mouse *sigh*
You know when I keep on saying that one of the things I love so much in Charlie is how he's in turn intense, funny, angsty, hurting, witty and vulnerable? I so got my wish with that episode, wow! He was all that and he made me ache sometimes... but in a good way. I loved how intense he was while speaking about his music and his guitar... the whole "Do you want your guitar?" scene may be my favourite so far. His "More than you know" answer was so very awesome! And when he sees it and starts to smile and cry - so.powerful, and beautiful too *g* He was so moving. His whole trusting Locke to help him find said guitar, when he even gives him the drugs was pretty impressive. He actually gave the man his drugs in the hope that Locke would be able to help him find the instrument. I mean, wow. I'd be pretty humbled by it if I were Locke. Thoough if I were Locke, I guess I'd take it in stride... like everything else happening all around the place *shrug*
As a matter of fact, every Locke-Charlie scene was a hit. The other one I liked is when Charlie is about to leave the cave to use his drug and Locke goes about telling him how he knows about him and his being in the band... the little guy turns his back to drugs to chat! His addiction isn't so important right now, after all - here is someone who recognises him, apparently liked what he did and wants to talk to him. Nice move, that one.
Of course the beehive scene was great too - on the funny side that one. Even scared out of his mind, Charlie is being snarky and funny and, you know, cute *g* Or the scene with Kate and Jack at the beginning of the episode - his verbally copulating line cracked me up! As did his you ran away fantastically. Glad my diversion spared you one.
Because you know, if I were one of the other actors, I'd be a bit jealous of Dom's character because he has the best lines ever! Hurley has some really cool lines, but Charlie? It's like a Best Lines Fest, seriously. How can a character be so cool all the time? Each time he opens his mouth, it's a hit! *happy sigh* I don't know about becoming a Dom fangirl --though he's just so bloody brilliant in that show-- but Charlie fangirl? 250%, baby! And I know "Oh, you mean you weren't already?" I'm just trying to make a point, that's all *pout*
Speaking of his lines? Did you see the flirting? Totally you all right! The flirting and the stroking of Locke's ego, too - great white hunter! *snicker* Sure, he was using sarcasm, but only because he didn't want to look too eager while still showing Locke how he loved the man's alpha and caveman act *knowing look* Maybe Sayid started to sniff around Sawyer and Charlie realised he needed to find someone else to take care of him... or something.
But seriously now, I just adored the Locke-Charlie dynamic intoday yesterday's episode. Locke seemed like the perfect man to help Charlie - because hey, the man wanted to do it. Locke wanted to get a chance to know him a little better, too. He said it himself, man, I'm not making that up. Charlie is so needy, he would be receptive to that kind of thing. Needy and hurting. And seriously, Yoda!Locke knew exactly what buttons to push. I have no idea about his motivation, good or bad, twisted or not, but he made Charlie smile, he gave Charlie's his guitar back --well, supposedly with the island's help, mind-- and he made him decide to give up his drugs and it all worked for me. Big time!
And Locke is so Yoda... only he's not small and he doesn't have big ears and he's not, you know, green, oh and he doesn't speak in reverse either, so maybe he's not exactly Yoda, but he's... he's Neo-Yoda! He's being all cryptic and seems to know so many things and is supposedly hiding so much. He's always giving little hints about what he knows about the island but he never really says anything. Or maybe we don't really listen - who knows? Not me, man! All I know is that I don't know anything and it's still confusing me, which I'm excited about because this is Lost for you, woohoo!
So yeah, according to Locke --and according to what we're made to believe anyway-- we're supposedly all agreeing on the fact that the island seems to be giving people what they want the most --apart, obviously, from them being rescued-- but what is it supposed to mean, exactly? Why? How? Why? Oh yeah, I already said that.
Yeah so to make a long story short and to end this review with my Lost motto : stillmadlyinlovewiththatshow!
Oh and this has nothing to do with anything but I'm starting to have a real playlist. Nowhere near what you must all have, mind, but music isn't such a big deal for me, so I never really had the urge to start a playlist - until I decided to play with iMesh a bit and found some of my favourite songs that is... I'm still building it, but I can now officially play with the Playlist List meme which everyone and their brother already did a hundred years ago, but who cares? So yeah :
The list of the twenty first songs on my playlist :

Nara - E.S Posthumus

This was in theory 150% pointless, but when did it ever stop me from including something in an entry, right? Also, this may be a tad less pointless if I say that should you want one of those songs, I'll YouSendIt to you?
Oh and I also did the Political Compass quizz and I ended up right beside Nelson Mandela, The Dalai Lama and Gandhi - woohoo!

Date: 2004-10-28 03:20 pm (UTC)HA! Don't suppose you read my post before saying that? Or is it just pure coincidence? :D
And I think the disappointed look Kate gave after Jack told her what he was *actually* thinking wasn't really so much disappointment as that she didn't want to go to the water place, she wanted to stay on the beach (and I expanded on that reasoning in my own journal so I won't go through it here). I love Jack/Kate but I figure Kate's not the type to be so obvious. She's blunt so if she had been thinking that I assume she would have commented on it rather than get puppy eyes and sulk.

Date: 2004-10-28 03:38 pm (UTC)And seriously, I love your reasoning more because I was just too embarrassed on Kate's behalf and I also thought she looked... stupid. So yeah, I'll follow you on this one, definitely like it better *nodnod*

Date: 2004-10-29 09:32 am (UTC)But I disagree about Jin. I can't love him, and I don't think that what he did was a real proof of love. He knew she didn't want him to work for her father, and that she wanted to escape, and he could have understood that instead of accepting bloody jobs. But I understand that it must be difficult for Sun to leave him, because of their former love, and because I'm sure he has good sides. There must be more of this story, as you said, we didn't see him being violent towards her, and her plea for help must hide some other mystery *g*

Not the first time I'm on my lonesome against the fandom so I can't say it's scaring me though lol All I hope is that I won't find out how wrong I was to believe in him and to have faith in his love for Sun. I would be so disappointed *pout*
