Well spank me rosy!
Jul. 8th, 2004 11:30 amThe other day,
nekosmuse asked a question about the first time we discovered fanfiction, and going through the comments, it seemed that most slashers' foray into fandom started with het stories - I know it wasn't my case, but I'm curious, did you start with het? Oh and if you did, which fandom and which pairing? And
turps33? I know about your answer but please, play the game because it always cracks me up when you mention your original ST:V pairing *eg*
Now for something different.
Oh wow! How is that even possible? Hear this, the Persuaders archive, the multi-fandom DD archive I thought dead for all those months was apparently still alive! It was just located somewhere else! I never even thought of asking, I just thought it was dead, gone in the ether, not in our cyber reality anymore.
And I was wrong! Oh so wrong. It's alive and kicking - make that, alive and spanking *eg* It boggles the mind. Well, mine at least.
Spent the afternoon with the Eclectic Sibling unit yesterday (that's what I'm going to call them because I decided to include sister + almost-BIL and cousins in the group, so there) since Julien paid us a little visit - he ended up staying the night too, which was really nice *g*
We did what we seem to always do these days: we went to the hospital to see my granddad (no real change, but no worse either, which is always a good thing *g*) and went to the mall afterward. I know it sounds redundant, but when we don't want to do anything special and we don't want to stay home, well, there're not lots of places to go, right? lol Besides, Juju always has a new DVD to buy *g*
This time Julien decided to buy the DVD of Michel Vaillant, which we watched together last night. Well, I really enjoyed it! Not the plot per se, but everything else, I did - and I was surprised because I never cared about Michel Vaillant in the first place, never read the BDs and didn't want to watch the movie when it was released, but well, yes the movie was fun *g*
I couldn't help slash Michel/Steve and Ruth/Odessa all movie long btw - Odessa was so Ruth's bitch, really. They both creeped me out, Odessa even more than Ruth, but Ruth was such a psycho.
What got me was the end though - so Cramer was responsible for David's death, Ruth kidnapped and threatened to kill Michel's father so that Michel and his team lost the race, her goons shot at them when they saved good ol' daddy - and nobody cared? I mean, they won and that's it? Oh yeah, Julie punched Cramer but hey, if he'd killed my husband (well, you know what I mean) I'd punch him too - that's what you do when someone killed the person you love, you punch them. Yeah, okay so she sorta tried to kill him first - but it didn't count, in the end, it wasn't Cramer in the car.
ANYWAY, I enjoyed the movie and chose to ignore some plot lines. So there.
Oh and another thing. Rémi (my other cousin, Julien's little brother) got his results for his Bac de Français (the first part of the first really important exam in our student's life) and they were really good :
French : Oral - 10 / written : 10
History : 16.
16! I mean, wow! My little 'bro' rocks *g*
ETA: AND as
alinewrites reminded me, I forgot to mention something important - something I've been talking about several times in the past week lol WaT! I couldn't watch it because of The Esu being here, but I have it on tape. Besides I still managed to sneak in and saw the end of the second episode and uh yeah, I'm going to fucking enjoy that show!!!

Fandom did make me a bit more straight though, rofl. I used to crush far more often on pretty girls and it was rare that I'd crush on an actor or even think about guys. Oh how things change. :p

not knowing fanfic existed, I couldn't search for it, and it's by sheer accident that one day I clicked a link named 'fanfic' out of curiosity ("hm, wonder what that is, since every fan site" - I searched info about episodes and photos - "seems to have it..."
"oh, so that's what it is? duuude, it's like having extra episodes! let's read!"
after a few weeks of reading gen and het, enigel finds a J/D labeled slash and her eyes widen.
"oooh!" and she doesn't flee this time... the rest is history ;-)

Date: 2004-07-08 05:34 am (UTC)I was like you. I remember the very first time when I heard about the term 'fanfiction'. I'd discovered the wonder of internet not so long ago and was cruising a site related to Poltergeist: The Legacy of all things, and after I clicked on pretty much all the links on the site, there was this last one called 'fanfiction'. I was curious, clicked and found out this whole new world and wow, what a revelation!
I mean, I was used to reading books on QL or ST:TOS, but on-line fanfic and this whole fics underground was totally new to me. It was Gen though, but I never ever read het. Didn't see the interest then and even less now lol
Though the first slash I tried didn't impress me that much now that I think of it. Not because it freaked me out or anything, but because the stories weren't that interesting - then I found this HL archive, Seventh Dimension - read my first Duncan/Methos series, and I was gone! *g*

Date: 2004-07-08 07:42 am (UTC)I didn't become encased in slash fic until Jack and Daniel, though. I was reading their slash fics before I ever saw the show.
After that, came The Sentinel (which I found through SG fandom). Then Queer as Folk came along because the girls on AG told me that if I wanted to write realistic m/m I needed to see QaF. (I'd never written sex before in a fic, because I wasn't sure I could do it.)
Then the Dark is Rising (Will/Bran) and now Harry Potter (Harry/Draco).
I was petrified of the H/D idea at first, I could NOT figure it out. But if you've read my journal, you know this story. :D

Date: 2004-07-08 11:09 am (UTC)Ahh, well, I was already a yaoi convert by the time I discovered fanfics ^_^!
Okay, the long story... I got into Gundam Wing through watching it on Cartoon Network. I noticed the very obvious chemistry between Quatre and Trowa but not between Heero and Duo; so when I went online to find out more, I was actually looking for stuff about Heero and Relena. I then came across a site (which has since closed *sniffs*) that gave a very detailed and well reasoned argument for Heero and Duo (1x2) being together. Whilst I was reading it, I was nodding thinking, 'Yeah, why didn't I see this before!' As you already know, I have always been a firm believer that gender does not matter when it comes to love, I have never felt any other way regarding this. What I found surprising was when I came to read 1x2 fics was that I found them very hot!
I thought that this was because my main sexual preference is of the male persuasion but I have realised (as I have come to realise that I like women as well, just not as much) that for me personally, it is about penetration, that is what I find a turn on ^_^!
There, probably more than you ever wanted to know but hey, I like sharing!

Date: 2004-07-09 02:37 am (UTC)Actually no, it wasn't, it was actually really interesting - I'm enjoying this thread tremendously *g* And I totally second what you said about the last bit, because that's the same thing for me - I mean, it's the main reason why I like my favourite guys to bottom now that I think of it *g* And I defy anyone to tell me it's because I'm identifying with them - huh hello? Lesbian here, thanks. I never ever watched movies or read books and put myself in the characters' place. I know it's how lot of people do, but not me.
Anyway, I digress *g* I didn't know about yaoi before I was into slash. Actually, I found out about yaoi a couple of years ago as opposed to five years for slash. I was aware and absolutely adored all the gay subtexts and sometimes down right texts I could find in mangas, I mean, I'm a fan of CLAMP after all, right? But I only found out about yaoi by accident, while reading one of my favourite magazine dealing with the anime world. It was such a revelation too! I remember calling

Date: 2004-07-08 11:44 am (UTC)Twenty-odd years later I have been writing fanfic for many of those, but only sharing in the past five years or so. I can read het, but I really prefer slash and gen.
I am pretty pan-fandom in my tastes. If I find an author I like, I will try and read all of their work, no matter the fandom, if I am familiar with it or not. The only fanfic I stay away from is based on video games (yep - it's out there) and anime (but only because I don't watch anime and don't understand who the characters are).
Currently, I read:
Harry Potter (but less now, as my preferred pairing is semi-obscure, and blocked on a major story I am co-writing)
The Sentinel
Stargate SG1
Magnificent Seven (any AU)
Smallville (but only because of
Houston Knights (fairly obscure)
Without a Trace
due South
Star Trek (almost any of the incarnations - if the story is well written)
Occationally Highlander
and a smattering of others I get into but don't really stay.
I guess you can say I like cop shows... Hmmm... I hadn't really thought of that before.
Re: First Fandoms...
Date: 2004-07-09 02:53 am (UTC)I can read het, but I really prefer slash and gen.
Oh so you're poly-fictional? Also I was wondering, since you can read het even if you really prefer slash, would you/do you read for instance both Jim/Blair and Jim/Megan (or any other pairings where you find at least one common character in said pairing)? Or do you have specifics pairings for each genre that aren't inter-changeable? And am I confusing you here? lol
I sometimes read a fandom I don't really know anything about just because I know and love the author, and was curious to read more of them, but on the whole, I stay close to my fandoms. I really love the connections I have with the characters already. And I know, when I read books as opposed to fanfics, the connection isn't there in the first place (except when I'm reading a series, I mean) and I sure enjoy them, but it's different for fanfics *g*
I see that we share several fandoms :
Harry Potter -> I do read HP from time to time. My favourite pairings are Lupin/Snape and, don't die from the shock please, Hagrid/Snape. Those pairings never cease to amuse me since canon, I'm all for Remus/Sirius, go figure *g*
The Sentinel -> I don't need to tell you how much I love that fandom, do I? It's one of my three mains, I can't get enough of it, I just can't *g*
Stargate SG1 -> Ditto. Oh yeah! lol
Magnificent Seven (any AU) -> I read some when the mood strikes - it's sorta rare but I still do. Never watched the series but know the characters anyway, and I really like Eric Close so I like to dive in sometimes *g*
Smallville -> I'm apparently an oddity here but I think the show is boring and lame, and never had the urge to look for stories *g*
Houston Knights -> I remember that show, and I also remember reading two or three fics.
Without a Trace -> Knew the show thanks to my flist, read some fics and now that the show *finally* airs here, I can see a new official fandom coming *g*
Due South -> Love the show but find the stories too tame for my tastes. Go figure lol
Star Trek -> Fan of ST:OS, I never really tried the fandom, but I sure read ST:V.
Occationally Highlander -> The very first fandom I really got into, and the one that opened the door to slash for me. I'm still reading that one *g*

Date: 2004-07-08 01:14 pm (UTC)Like you my first fansite was a PtL site. I didn't have a computer at the time so used to go to the local library. I saw something called fanfiction there but had no idea what it was.
Then we got our first computer and as I was a trekker I looked up Voyager sites. From which I found the P/T list *waits for Mouse to stop laughing* I was an avid P/Ter for a long time, reading through the archive, on lists etc. Then one day I was at Yahoo groups and saw this link to stories called slashfic. Now, I don't like horror films so didn't check it out. However, weeks later when I couldn't find anything new I went back, clicked and it was a C/P n/c story! I was like 'I'm not the only one that likes this stuff'. Before that I thought I was some kind of freak for liking hurty gay stuff, yet here was this vast place full of the stuff I like!
I then read through Voy, PtL, TAT, BSG, HL, TS ( and I'll remember that day forever! ) SG, MX and many many more until I get to now and popslash.
So yes, I was a hetter, an official one too *g*

Date: 2004-07-09 03:04 am (UTC)And you know thinking back of the first times - I remember censoring the more graphic sex scenes when I read slash! lol It didn't last long, but I did in the very beginning *shakes head* Aren't I cute *makes face*
Seriously, it amuses me to no end that most slashers started with het. I mean, I never knew het would be the first genre people saw on-line - or looked for for that matter but that's just because I never thought of doing it myself lol Believe it or not, but even when I first got into fanfics, I never really even *found* het. It was Gen all around - and then slash. Oh sure, I saw some het stories here and there and wasn't interested anyway, but it wasn't the obvious genre it seems to have been for most of you *g*
Before that I thought I was some kind of freak for liking hurty gay stuff, yet here was this vast place full of the stuff I like!

Date: 2004-07-08 01:27 pm (UTC)by Kate Rickman (actually that would be the second one but the first one with sex). heh. Gossamer was my God. *snickers* But then I moved on to Mulder/Krycek via Nonie Rider and her To the Hilt (http://basement.ditb.org/archive/17/nonieridertothehilt199401.shtml) series. Which also helped kick off my… kinks in fic. I went M/K crazy for a bit. Damn did I. As well as M/Sk and M/Sc/K and-- anything with all of them in anyway pretty much. I think I’m still in love with Up Against the Wall (http://basement.ditb.org/archive/10/jenisaksupagainstt193901.shtml). Not to mention Theban Band and the manips-- which I had one of the wing!manips up on my wall for quite some time. *g* I was in that fandom for a good four years before I looked into anything else, well that and I didn’t have a computer and no real care for anything else. But alas you know what turned my head don’t you? *sigh* Jack and Daniel. More specific: Dannywhumping. >:D I run the first two fics I read in the SG fandom together but damn they were brilliant. I would love to find the one again but I only remember part of the story. Oy. Adrenaline, drug induced, blood thirsty Daniel going after his Jack. Then there were a few piddly ones in the middle before I hit LOTR and now HP. Oh and Buffy *grumbles about Spike and Andrew*
Still there is nothing better than a good ole fic where Mulder and Kryeck beat the shit out of each other and one or the other is forced… *sighs* One of my favorites had to do with asphyxiation. Wow. I am a freak. lol.
Heh. You asked for first and I gave you my whole history. Um… sorry? :) I just did a whole list of what I read on my info the other day too, for like the hell of it. I know I’m still missing some. Eh. But those are my main stables.

Date: 2004-07-09 03:15 am (UTC)XF didn't come first for me. The very first time I encountered fanfic it was Poltergeist: The Legacy, gen - but the moment when I really got into fanfic was Highlander. It's thanks to that fandom that I found out about slash. XF came afterward and I forged my darker reader persona thanks to those two fandoms, XF in particular *g* I never even tried to look for Mulder/Scully because I didn't want them to hook up on the show, I wasn't going to pair them in *fics* right? lol Anyway by then, I was already a slasher and didn't even think of trying something else.
I have some favourites M/K stories, dark and preferably with Alex forcing his little Fox, but I think my favourite ever is the Second Grace (http://basement.ditb.org/cgi-bin/search.cgi?SizeMin=0&SizeMax=0&Date=0&Awards=0&AuthorsChoice=0&Title=Second+Grace&Title_Range1=0&Author=&Author_Range1=0&CatOther=&Summary=&SortBy=0&SortOrder=0&NumToList=0&ShortResults=0) series. Actually I have a second that comes close, but I never remember the title sorry *sigh* And I just checked it's not on my HD anymore, so huh I could go on a disk hunt but it's scary! lol
Oh and Danny Whumping is my religion! I still remember finding the Danny Whumping Archive, I was in heaven! lol
Don't apologise, it was fun and interesting *g*

Date: 2004-07-08 04:33 pm (UTC)I was one of those people who deeply opposed the cancellation of the show. I was hooked on that show for a time I tell you. I even participated in the catfood can campaign. What fans did was box cans of cat food and write on them something about saving EE and bringing Gary back. The cans were then donated to local animal shelters. It was for a good cause and a good show so I participated. When I discovered the show was officially cancelled I started combing the internet for stuff and stumbled onto fan fiction. That's also when I started writing it as well. Wrote two EE stories...one's not finished but that was my start. Not long after that I stumbled into the Stargate Fan fiction realm...Heliopolis was the first archive I found and I quickly became a devoted fan fic writer and reader of Stargate.
As for your second question: did you start with het?
No. I actually started with gen fic. I read a ton of gen fic on the EE fan fic list then found Stargate and read a ton of gen fic in that fandom. It wasn't until reading tons of gen fic that I jumped into the het and slash. Somewhere along the line I became an addicted slash writer and now seem to only be able to produce Jack/Daniel slash...
Take care!
no subject
Date: 2004-07-09 06:44 am (UTC)I started with Heliopolis too with SG, or more exactly I was looking for slash and on my way I found the Heliopolis archive - I really liked the stories there so didn't exactly abandon it even after stumbling on Area 52 *g* SG and TS are the only two fandoms for which I can read gen.
But I started reading fics with Gen, not het. It just never took my fancy. Not ever *g*
now seem to only be able to produce Jack/Daniel slash...
You do it so beautifully, too *g*
