OOCness = dirty little secret
Aug. 24th, 2004 11:18 amKnow what? Sometimes I'll be reading a fic and I'll realise that even though the story is nice, the characterisation is a little or more than a little off - it's almost the Daniel I'm used to read but not or it's not how Blair would react... and even knowing that? Sometimes I won't care and I'll enjoy the story anyway.
I was just reading one of those fics just five minutes ago and I couldn't help but smile at one of the scenes because really, that was not Daniel and still, I thought what the hell I'll take it, thanks. Let's say my mind will automatically shift the character I'm reading into a sort of AU!Daniel, one who would behave like that *shrug* Or I don't change anything, but I'll just read the fic as being OOC and be done with it. That being said, I have limits - I won't enjoy fics where say, Daniel gets hysterical because he's suddenly afraid his beagles won't sleep right because of I don't know, a storm. I'm making that up btw, so if Orrymain did write a scene like that, really, it's not my fault - besides if you happen to know she did, how come? lol
Some people's dirtynot so little secrets are badfics *cough*
turps33*cough*, mine? It's weird characterisation, apparently. When I'm in a certain mood, I'll enjoy those out-of-character stories without even blinking - go figure.
Anyway.
Something I'd like to have my little hands on right now? Apart from the NC-17 version of Boondock Saints on DVD that is - thanks to
perseph2haded for reminding me why I want to own this movie so much, btw. So yeah, something I'd like to have? Van Helsing - The London Assignment. I've heard about it when VH came out of course - everyone was raving about the 'cross-dressing' scene, but yesterday I saw a vid using the anime and really... I would love to own the DVD indeed *nodnod* Carl somehow looked even cuter than in the movie and considering I'm a huge DW fan, it's saying something, believe me. So I'll add this London Assignment to the long list of DVDs I Want.
And finally because I'm always making even a tiny reference to the Olympics these days - Emilie Lepennec, the French girl who won the gold for the asymmetric bars Sunday night? She's from Créteil! As in, the city right next to Choisy. Wow... so Val-de-Marne can breed something else than rap singers after all, I'm impressed!
And French athleticism? Ouch, not doing good, which was a surprise because we sure counted on them. Am wondering whether Christine Arron didn't curse them after her first race *cough*
ETA: Oh boy! There's something I wanted to link the other day and forgot - shame on me. You all know about fics and you all know about caps, right? But do you usually read pic-fic? Because if you don't, well it's a huge mistake! So here for your pleasure
greensilver's Jack and Daniel's Drunken alien-Vegas Wedding and
nicci_mac's Jack, Daniel and the Big Vibrator, or Behold the Power of the Mighty Pout - so okay, Nicci didn't exactly gave this title to her pic-fic, I made up it up, but after you'll read it, you'll agree with me that it's a kick ass title *nod*

Date: 2004-08-24 02:15 am (UTC)As my friend Lady Bast says: "If you're a good enough writer, you can get away with anything."
Even a Mary Sue and OOC and all those other things you're not supposed to do
If you're a good enough writer.
I also love badfic. It's very entertaining. In fact, mocking/riffing badfic is sometimes much more fun than reading something good.

Date: 2004-08-24 04:52 am (UTC)I also know that everyone has a different perception of a character so OOC is usually a fairly subjective subject, but well we're always aware of when a character enters OOC mode and as long it's not that obvious or that it doesn't belong to a badly written story, ie that in the confine of the story it doesn't sound OTT or stupid, it'll be okay with me *g*
And I know lot of people enjoy badfics and seek them sometimes, I see enough mocking of them on my flist. I for one don't see the attraction. I mean, no, I see why it would be fun - some badfics are just so... well bad, but I don't like the whole 'tearing a fic and an author' thing and overall I think it's a waste of time and totally un-constructive, anyway. And as a matter of fact, the bottom line is, I don't like mocking for mocking's sake *g*
I don't like a writer - I'll just away from their work and shut up because what's the point, really? I realise I'm facing a badfic? I'll hit the back button because I don't have time to waste. Though since we all have different tastes in stories, we're bound to find stories we think suck and why couldn't we downright say it, right? And after all, saying a fic sucks doesn't mean it does - just that you think it sucks which makes a difference... the thing is, it often turns ugly, which is why I don't like it. Saying I don't like InsertWriter is fine, ridiculing their work for all to see is a line I don't like to see crossed, I guess *shrug*
That being said, I know it's just me and I don't think anything of those who actually love doing it - different perceptions and all that *g*

Date: 2004-08-24 08:13 am (UTC)If you mock only slightly bad or moderately bad fic, you just sound petty. If you parody a really spectacular piece of crap, it's one of the funniest things ever.
Believe me, there's some real craptastic stuff out there. Just begging for it.

Date: 2004-08-24 03:32 am (UTC)Personally I think being a little OOC is fine if the writing is good enough to support it. Plus it depends on how OOC it is. For example, you may have seen I spent the last week reading an OOC story. I kept going because they were the characters I knew, but skewed off to the side.
But you're right, there's a point where you can't ignore the OOCness of it. That may be beagles for you ( I hope you know you make me laugh at the word Beagle now whenever I see it ) for me it's JC who wears kitten ears and a tail.
Plus you know when you read as much as we do you run out of the perfect in character stories. To steal an analogy from a sexy French lady I know. Steak is good but sometimes a Big Mac is just as satisfying ;)

Date: 2004-08-24 04:57 am (UTC)Yes, apparently OOC isn't so wrong and repulsive if it comes in small dose - or if it's nicely written, which usually is the same thing anyway.
I like our limits, sis - nicely diversified and huh... sorta pervi sounding when you think of it lol
Well boy was I inspired when I thought about this little analogy! lol It sure comes in handy in fandom life, right? And yes, I think OOCness is my Big Mac *g*

Date: 2004-08-24 06:11 am (UTC)Anyway - wait, did you ever use a characterisation like that or are you worried people would kill you? lol Because we could pretend I made you write and everything, you could blame me for writing queen!Martin - it would take care of the problem *nodnod*

Pretty much, if I didn't mean the story to be serious, Martin gets painted as very campy. Hell, in that first one, I have him writing poetry about how brave and beautiful Prince Danny is. Granted, it's a fairy tale spoof, but still.

Date: 2004-08-24 06:15 am (UTC)I love you. That made me laugh.
Whether or not I can handle OOC depends entirely on the premise, the genre, how self-consciously OOC it is. I'm actually more inclined to read slathered on tongue-in-cheek OOC than I am to read a fic where the characterization just bugs me a bit.
Oh, and I'm glad you enjoyed my bout of silliness, there. People seem to think I'm funny, lately - I find it all a little baffling. *g*
