Feb. 1st, 2006 11:55 amAh the Oscars nominations have been announced. And lo! Brokeback Mountain has eight of them! Yes, I'm filled with glee over this ;-) I just loved the movie more than I ever thought I would - I mean, I really wanted to like it but it certainly exceeded any kind of expectation I had - from the acting to the cinematography and I'm really happy it got nominated not once, not twice but eight times *bounces*
And also cocorico! Two French movies made it to the list too! Hail to Joyeux Noël and La Marche de l'Empereur. I made a count of the films I've seen that have been nominated and I counted eight of them. Not bad for me.
Unrelated now - well, maybe not but it's big screen v. small one -
goldatamera shared a spoiler for Supernatural 1x20 and seriously, I am psychic! John and the boys will have the reunion we'll have been waiting for! And yes, it was expected, I don't see how it could NOT happen, but whatever, man; it was in my list too and now it's there! This will KILL me! They'd better not mess up with that one, believe you me *fingers crossed*
Unrelated again; after talking about Prison Break to Terri, I had to watch a couple episodes and I'm wondering something; so okay in the pilot it seems that LJ and Michael are close, ie LJ is there at the trial and he's - very much understandably so - pretty upset at what is happening to his uncle. And Michael, even though he knows deep inside that he's doing the right thing, the only thing he can think of to save his brother - and incidentally, LJ's father - has to hurt at the knowledge that his nephew will feel betrayed once more.
But after that scene... there is not a single reference to the relationship they might have had before. So I can buy the theory that LJ would be angry at Michael first and then way too overwhelmed by the fact that he's reconnecting with his father but still... not even a single little mention? Not even on Michael's part? I mean, he would have to worry about the kid, wouldn't he? Even when LJ is in such deep shit, it doesn't feel like it's affecting Michael. Lincoln, hell yes, but Michael? Not so much. And I don't believe it doesn't, but I'd have loved to see it. Even if he has to focus all his energy on Teh Big Escape, I think a little question regarding LJ's well being wouldn't have been amiss.
Anyway, I thought I missed that kind of scenes.
And finally, I don't think I'll participate in either
sentinelsecrets or
ts_ficathons after all. The prompts don't talk to me. And I know, what about a challenge blah blah blah, well I'll see if something percolates before the last day of 'signing up', but I'm not even sure I like the prompts so you see my problem :-) But being a reader can work too - and maybe even for a Harlequin challenge, who knows?
Oh and speaking of TS! Did you see? Over at scifibrain, they made a little list of the Top Twelve Slashiest Couples and Jim/Blair is #1. Well of course the boys are number 1 but that's still sweet to see lol

Date: 2006-02-01 11:31 am (UTC)As for best picture, I've only seen two so far and I still say Crash is a far more deserving candidate overall. I'm gonna go see Munich and Syriana so I can see what the other nominess are like, and if it doesn't come out before them I'm so downloading Capote, too. :-) I wanna see which one I should be rooting for. And I also want to see if I'll be crossing for my fingers for Heath as well as for Michelle or not. Though seriously, how cool would it be if both the young adorable new parents got an Oscar, uh? Man, a new baby girl, love, AND and Oscar nomination each. That's one blessed household, lol.

Date: 2006-02-01 11:49 am (UTC)I have no idea what the story of Capote is, but the title makes me laugh each time I read it lol
I'm not enough of a movie buff to care about all those movies, I'll admit, so I won't be able to really compare. I'll leave that to people who goes to the cinema often, like you :-)
That's one blessed household, lol.
They're certainly lucky these days *g*

Date: 2006-02-01 11:58 am (UTC)Jarhead is fucking amazing movie, seriously. But it's a war movie so it's not for everybody. That said, there is no denying that Jake's performance in it is breathtaking, and it's not that he's better in it than he is in BBM (let's face it, Jake is ALWAYS good) but it's a more demanding role in that he has a wider range of emotions and moods to portray than he did in BBM. Which yeah, ok, so he got a nod after all and I'm happy for him but Jarhead should totally have heard him a best actor nod instead of just a best supporting actor one.
And I'm not always as movie crazy as I have been lately; it's like for books, I get periods when I just devour them. Also, since the meds have washed out of my system entirely I've really been enjoying watching movies, reading, etc... so I'm going a little over the top, lol. I have the concentration I'd been lacking for the past two years back! Woot!

Date: 2006-02-01 12:05 pm (UTC)It's weird because I love old war movies like Le Jour le plus Long, Un Pont Trop Loin ou Les Canons de Navarone but more recent war movies? Just don't do it for me. Like, at all. Just one of those things, I guess...
I have the concentration I'd been lacking for the past two years back! Woot!
Dude it's awesome! I'm glad for you, and yeah you have a lot of catching up to do, then and you're right, you definitely should enjoy yourself *hugs*

Date: 2006-02-01 12:07 pm (UTC)But the Michael side? There is even a scene where Linc talks about being very worried about LJ and Michael is all "Hmmm, yeah, yeah, *must scout out guard who stole my watch*", like you couldn't be any less interested in the fact that LJ's parents were killed and the he is on the run. Don't get me started that Michael's original plan (scuba shop in Panama) apparently blindly expected Linc to cut off all ties with LJ, Lisa and Veronica. And that to this day he hasn't made any hints about being willing to change that plan (like shouldn't they be making plans of how to pick up LJ and how to take LJ and Veronica with them on their escape plan?).
Michael is being a dick.

Date: 2006-02-01 05:00 pm (UTC)Which is why I need more fics which show me the close bond they had... or just the bond, but something!
no subject
Date: 2006-02-01 05:50 pm (UTC)I just figure that Michael and LJ's bond couldn't have been that tight. Considering what Michael's body and Michael's apartment must have looked like the last few months before the bank robbery and LJ seemed to have been clueless about the whole plan. I just figure that Michael probably spent the last 2-3 years pretty much obsessed with the case, so whatever bond he must have had with LJ, it probably suffered due to that anyway.
There is also the factor of almost drugdealing LJ. I figure if Michael really was a major factor in his life, it probably wouldn't have come to that, at least not so quickly. (even if you want to do something bad because you are mad with your family, it's not like you can go from zero to 100% if you haven't been somehow in the touch with the scene beforehand)
And that doesn't even cover the fact that the show apparently intentionally tried to hike up the Linc/LJ relationship by throwing in random remarks about how LJ did halfway regularly visit with his dad (the whole story around the glass table).
I'm not saying that it's not going to happen at all, I'm just saying that at this point, with the info we have, I'm not expecting that tight of a bond between Michael and LJ.

Date: 2006-02-02 10:29 pm (UTC)I have to say I don't like the idea of them not being that close. I don't know why... or maybe because I'm pretty tight with most of my aunts and uncles and think it doesn't sound 'right in a way.
Even if it does, since yes, everyone behaves differently and all that jazz. But I quite liked the idea of Michael and LJ being close.

Date: 2006-02-02 10:41 pm (UTC)Wow, you certainly put a lot of thought into it, that was interesting, thanks :-)
I'm kinda obsessive with details on the whole show ;) Which is odd since I never actually watch any episodes more than once, but I guess I just have a good memory.

Date: 2006-02-01 03:30 pm (UTC)*gasp* You don't want to write a Harlequin Jim and Blair?!! You know, they have the more erotic Harlequins...you could always write something with a little more steam than the normal romance. Or, how about hustler!Blair who's undercover doing research, but gets picked up by Jim (as john or cop). *weg*
For myself, I'm waffling. I've found a '
girlboy goes to HS reunion and needs date' one, and 'kids dropped off on bachelor's doorstep' one that both speak to me. So, HS reunion or kids? *g*no subject
Date: 2006-02-01 03:48 pm (UTC)Actually, I was going to ask some precisions about the challenge :-) I'm not signing up yet at all but I'm not completely ruling out a potential change of heart lol Maybe I just don't have the right idea of the whole Harlequin thing? So okay... what does it entail exactly? Because since you mentioned some hustler!Blair - which, yes, did kinda pique my interest lol - it means it might not be so as rigid as I thought it was so... how do I know what is or not a Harlequin story?
And you said - I mean, the guidelines said - that we have to use a title from one of those books, right? But then we also have to inspire ourselves from the book too? Like, I don't know, look at the summary and construct our own story around it?
Yeah okay, that's a lot of questions but I realise I might not see the challenge as it's supposed to be.
As for you... HS reunion or kids, uh? Which btw, I guess kinda starts answering my own question? I don't know... both would be pretty amusing, that's for sure.

Date: 2006-02-01 05:08 pm (UTC)I did a search for Harlequin at amazon.com and went through the titles until something struck me, then checked to see if it had a blurb. We'd like to see the fics have something in common with the blurb, if there is one, but the fic doesn't have to follow the story exactly. Most especially because, chances are likely that none of us will have read the book we choose, lol. Unless you've read a book or seen a movie and go, that's what I want to use!!!
For example, I found a book called 'A Man for the Night' with the following blurb: Josie Williams needs a date for her ten-year high school reunion. When she showed up five years ago, she came away with mortified memories of a night in tears. This time she intends to arrive with her boyfriend in tow, ready to sparkle and dazzle. Too bad she breaks up with her current boyfriend just before the reunion. At a friend's suggestion, she arranges an escort for the evening. When she meets, however, Josie's fantasies take flight, and she dreams of taking him home as her sex slave for the night.
Callum McCloud's younger brother makes big bucks escorting attractive women. But when his big break comes for his acting career, he is scheduled for a date with Josie. So he convinces his older brother to fill in. Callum did not expect such a sexy lady, and suddenly his libido kicks up to high. Now he is determined to fill every fantasy Josie has on her wish list. But more than lust brews in their heated encounter, and emotions will demonstrate a will of their own.
I'm thinking of switching this around so Blair needs the date to his college...whatever, Steven's the escort who can't make it and Jim's the brother who gets lucky. *vbg*
On the other hand, I found a book entitled 'The Doctor's Baby' which had no blurb, and it's one of the two children stories running around my head.
But, you know, if you search the list (and you don't have to just use amazon or even just search for Harlequin, search for 'romance AND hustler', lol!) you might find something that strikes your fancy, even if it's a title with no blurb that you can work in anyway you want. Also, you're not limited to books. Seen a movie you think would make a good TS story?
And like Sori said, it doesn't HAVE to be AU (though 2 out of 3 of my ideas are *g*). You can have something Harlequin-ish happen to the boys sometime during the series, or post-TSbBS. There's all sorts of options!!!
If you can't tell, I'm really, really looking forward to it. The SGA Harlequin Challenge at
I'm glad you haven't ruled it out entirely. *crosses fingers you'll play*

Date: 2006-02-01 04:30 pm (UTC)I thought about throwing out a challenge for any slash writer in whatever fandom they want to write in to include the phrase that Jack says to Ennis, "I wish I knew how to quit you." I'm already using it in a story myself. Brokeback is so damn inspiring.

Date: 2006-02-01 05:03 pm (UTC)Ohhhh that would be an interesting challenge, all right. I actually had Numb3rs popping into my head just now with the brothers saying to kind of stuff to each other - Don more likely.
I'm kinda challenge challenged - stupid pun intended, yes - so I'm never sure to participate in any - ie, I usually don't - but your prompt certainly has potential *g*
