Supernatural 1x18 - "Something Wicked"
Apr. 8th, 2006 09:22 pm"Something Wicked" has been watched. Be still my heart!
That episode... that episode was so delicious that there's no words for it. I loved it SO INCREDIBLY MUCH that I want to CRY! In a very very good way.
OH DEAN I LOVE YOU SO!
Man! Okay, me? I want to send the writers flowers. In thanks. Because they write Dean's angst like nobody's business, which, I know, is a good thing since it's their business but dude! It's not the time to play with words, okay?!
Dean. Oh Dean, you broke my heart! And I know, each time I write a review which happens to be for an episode I especially loved, in other words, when I'm talking about an episode I want to worship, this is what I mention first, how Dean broke my heart but it's like one of the main reasons why I adore that character. Because there's a vulnerability to him that is just heartbreaking. Because he might be all bravado and smartass'ness but there's so much more to him that that. There's pain and hurt and it runs very deep.
I love how that episode seems to have open a new door on Dean's psyche. Or, say, the door was already ajar and we could hear and seen what was behind it but this time it was slammed open and we could see it all; each and every little detail, each and every nuance.
Of course we all knew that Dean is a protector. He's a protector in general, but more importantly, he's Sam's protector - it's there, deep inside him. So we knew that. But, this time, it was like they were saying 'Okay, you know stuff about Dean, but we're going to show you exactly where he's coming from. And we'll show you an event that weighed very heavily on Dean as a kid, enough that it would shape him in the man he'll become later.'
And yes, the flashbacks? They killed me.
I loved everything in those flashbacks because they told us so much! How heavily John relies on Dean, how much the whole hunting thing is ingrained in him already, how much Dean cares for his little brother.
We see Sam being allowed to be a little kid, what with the cartoon watching - and hee he was watching Thundercats! Dude, I watched it too when I was a kid :-) - and the way John and Dean talk about him. He was probably humoured well enough, like the Lucky Charms thing implied... and I thought it was so sweet when he offered the prize to Dean.
We see Dean being already quite self-sacrificing, responsible. But we also see him still being a kid, ie he gets bored out of his skull and he leaves the room against John's order to go play video games, which was great too. Same thing when, in the end, he can't 'shoot first and ask questions later.'
Then you have John so terrified about the idea of losing Sam and saying those things that will haunt Dean for about twenty years and aww ANGST!
I adored The Story of Dean, how could I not? :-) It made me feel so bad for little!Dean, thinking of how much he must have hated himself for what he did - basically, nothing a normal kid wouldn't do, except he didn't understand that - and then for big!Dean as well because, now, all those times when he obeyed Dad's orders, or talked about obeying Dad, appear in a different light. And it makes so much sense. Even more than before.
Also me? I love John. I really do, but boy did he completely screw up that time! When Dean explains that John never mentioned the whole affair again I'm not surprised in the sense that I suppose I wouldn't like to be reminded of a time when I majorly screwed up - and I decided that's the reason why John kept silent about it. Like, suddenly he realised that Dean was just a kid - wow, a nine-year old isn't a thirty-something grown up? Shocking! - and that because of that 'oversight', he almost lost Sam... and eventually, he might have lost Dean as well.
Maybe he realised that, yes, he could rely on Dean on a lot of things, but ultimately he, Daddy Winchester, was a) the adult in their group and b) the father in their family and that, maybe, just maybe, there were some things he just couldn't ask of Dean. Except that's absolutely not what he said, and his angry words - born out of his fear for what had happened and for what could have happened - then his silence totally convinced Dean that he was the one who had done something wrong and... yeah, Daddy? Meet Future FuckedUp Dean.
He should have reassured Dean, he should have told him it wasn't his fault: exactly like Dean did himself with Michael, actually. So I do think Daddy screwed up here, but I see it as a mistake and not something he did on purpose, you know? And maybe he thought he was doing the right thing by not mentioning again. In any case, my love for John is still strong. Though if you do believe John is a bad father, I'm good with that. Different perceptions and all that...
Though I'll tell you that I thought he was pretty cavalier in the way he sent the boys on this mission but, at the same time, Dean seems to have understood his intent and, in the end, he did save Sam and he redeemed himself in his own eyes, I guess.
The last scene now? Omg DEAN YOU KILLED ME: Sam wishes for the innocence he lost and Dean does as well... for SAM. Dean wishes for lost innocence, not for himself but for Sam and just - how can I even begin to tell you what that scene did to me, how? There's nothing powerful enough to express how much I adored that moment and how incredible it was!
Oh and speaking of Sam: I really enjoyed when he apologises to Dean for the times he got on his case for blindly obeying their dad's orders... how he understands why Dean did it. That was a great moment. It's like Sam is totally discovering who his father and brother are and why they do the things they do. It's a nice development. And Dean's come back was, of course, so Dean lol
Onto the Random Stuff now:
Give me a boogeyman kind of creature and I'm gone! Dude, I hate those *shudder*
I loved seeing Daddy Winchester again. Can I also say that I'm so grateful he didn't keep that haircut all his life?
I adore how the boys seem to have their own journals too. I know it's not the first time we see it, but I love the idea. It makes me smile though because the journals are rather small, in particular compared to their dad's. It's just sweet to me ;-)
Michael was an awesome kid! I really loved him.
Dean cracked me up when he almost had an heart attack when the old woman started screaming at them.
And Sam cracked me up too when he was laughing his ass off and mocking teh Dean lol
Speaking of the boys. Ha! "Two queens" "I bet". So I knew this line was due, but still, hearing it was love *g* And not even because I'm a cest lover, btw - I'll have you know I always watch my show without my slash goggles on - but just because it's funny to see a gay ref made without it being turned into ridicule or something. Like, it was said and basta, no heavy 'I'm da man and I'm no queer' shit we usually get in that kind of show. And it's the second time the boys are mistaken for a gay couple, which is always fun :-)
I also loved the scene when Dean tells everything to Sam about that night. And how when the scene begins, Sam is behind the counter thingie but when we come back from the flashback, he's sitting right next to Dean. And I liked their exchance: "You were just a kid". "Dont - just, don't". Wonderful moment!
Oh and know what? When little!Sam offered the Lucky Charms prize to little!Dean? I actually thought that this was where his necklace came from. Yeah, I can do melodramatic too. But it's just that I would love to know where it's from, and it sounded like a good story. As it happens, it gave me an idea for a little kid!fic...
Boy I love that show SO MUCH! *is still giddy*
And here are four screencaps:

Could Dean have more gorgeous eyes?

No, I'm asking! Come to think of it, could he be more gorgeous, period?

And this one because I can't resist teary eyed!Dean.

I said: I can't!
To finish, the fly boat Lastly: SPN trailer for upcoming episodes [Actually, I don't know whether it's the trailer for the next episode or for the next episodes, plural. YSI link]

Date: 2006-04-09 07:21 am (UTC)So, yeah, I agree with everything you said. This was such a brilliant episode, wasn't it? I'm pretty sure the Dean angst killed me a little inside. He was just so Dean, even as a little kid and you could see how he became the man he was and what it cost him and I really loved this episode, you know?
Sam wishes for the innocence he lost and Dean does as well... for SAM.
And this, right here, this is why I'll never love Sam as much as I love Dean.
