Il est trop chou !
Jan. 22nd, 2020 02:49 pmYou know that lovely feeling when you have a couple of shows you enjoy on the air and some anticipated shows about to premiere and you're basking in the joy that is being a fangirl with many shows to watch and rave about? This is me right now. Basking in it all <3 I sometimes go with barely any tv to watch and I'll admit I always feel a bit bereft when it happens; like tv has let me down somehow. Surely tv knows how much I love it and should deliver the goods without interruption? But we sometimes go on a little break.
My tv schedule is pretty packed at the moment. I'm currently watchingfour three (I finished The Witcher last week) shows and about to add two new ones by the end of week.
Turns out I started watching Magnum P.I (2018). A show that has never been on my radar. I think I knew it existed but in a pretty abstract way: I had no idea who played in it, didn't know there was even a second season, you get the gist. Ironically (like with Lethal Weapon) it caught my attention once it made it to French tv. I caught an episode by accident and quickly realised that Jay Hernández plays the cutest Magnum. No, but seriously. The most adorable.
Broken boys, adorable boys, they're my kryptonite, ok? I have the hardest time resisting them. As in er, I can't, basically (Imagine when they're both *cough*Malcolm Bright*cough*).
I don't see this show becoming a Most Favourite per se but it's super charming and is my new feel-good, fun tv show. Because Thomas is adorable and seeing him interact with his bros or Higgings or Katsumoto or Kumu or just about anyone fills me with glee ♥ (I love that Juliet is basically the tough one of the two). If I had a "complaint" (if you can call it that) it's that I sometimes wish the show were darker. It's more of a "tell, not show" kinda approach: we know that Thomas, Rick and T.C went through a traumatic experience but the flashbacks seem few and far between and they're pretty tame when we do get them. They will mention the consequences of such a traumatic experience but without ever really getting into the psychology of it. Which, fair enough, every single show doesn't have to be anxiety-inducing, obviously. I made my peace with the fact that it was "mild" and whenever I feel like going deeper in the h/c side of the narrative, I just go to AO3, as you do. As we all know, fic writers have a deep understanding of the fact that many of us need our boys (read: Thomas, here) to be in pain! Be it physically or psychologically. Or even better, both!
Besides, I already have a show that loves to not just tell but show and dive deep into the consequences of past trauma, namely Prodigal Son. Which, btw, came back on Monday! I basically spent the whole day yesterday thinking of the downloaded file waiting for me on my computer but alas Tuesday is my longest day so I had to wait a loooong time before being back home. Between you and me, I was this close to skipping my German class but because I've missed so much of them due to the strike, I decided I needed to get my priorities right and attend the class. It was a tough decision to make ;) The episode was so good! It actually had my heart racing at times and there is one particular scene that had me actually hold my breath for a sec. Definitely good tv ♥ Can't wait for next week now (as per usual). One of these days I'll write an essay about why I love the show so much. I'll hide it behind a cut, promise ;)
Oh, and speaking of dark. I've started a rewatch of Hannibal. I'm onto the beginning of season 2 right now. I had to take a break because we had The Witcher to finish (seriously, so many things to do and watch, so few hours in a day and night to do them all) but I'll go back to it whenever I can. Which... now that I think of it, might have to wait a little longer because the new season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina starts on Friday and ST: Picard premieres either on the same day of the day before? I don't remember. In any case, I have myself a busy tv time ahead ;)
