The good ole canon v fanon convo popped its head again and each time it does, it reminds me of this series I read back when I was getting into TS - it was wonderfully written, it followed canon so closely that you could have almost mistaken it for an actual episode and it left me cold. It was weird... except not cause when that's when I realised that really, if I read fanfic it was to get something more than what I got from within the confine of the show and 100% canon wasn't what I wanted from fanfiction. Of course I want enough canon material to recognise the fandom I'm reading and the characters I love... If I want to read original characters playing in Cascade or at the Cheyenne Mountain, I'll... well actually I wouldn't want that so the point is moot. So yeah, I want the canon thing but I love fanon a lot too. The Sentinel/Guide thing that so many fans seem to find annoying, I can't get enough of it. Also, saying you don't like fanon because you don't think it's in the spirit of the show and so on is one thing, but saying fanon isn't valid because only canon is and Jim and Blair wouldn't ever do InsertWhatever always makes me smile a little because last time I checked, Jim didn't fuck Blair on the kitchen table except we all know he did, of course but it doesn't make slash less valid. I mean, I do get what they say, but we're back to a matter of likes and dislikes so... well, that's the reason why we won't ever see the end of that topic, granted *g*

Also, I found an LJ topic that induces trauma for me... the Extra Icon Expiring thing. If I talk about it, people will assume I'm actually calling for attention and expecting someone to buy me six more months of it and that's such bad LJ netiquette to even mention it. But I'm just a whiny little bitch and if you follow my LJ, you must know that I love my icons so of course I'd whine about my extra icon slots coming to an end even if I am going to renew it next week because hi! Icon addict speaking *waves* So why can't I whine with my conscience free of guilt, huh? That's not buddies. Also, if there's a place where I can vote for getting the 100 icon slots before, well er, next week, let me know [/sweet dream]

Changing the subject - because I just love doing that - thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] scrollgirl for the link to [livejournal.com profile] cesperenza's The Dead Zone fic, namely The Big Picture. Walt/Johnny fic - long and plotty and great. Need to send fb, btw. Fic that also made me want to watch my DZ tapes... and buy the DVDs because hi bis! boxsets addict talking *waves again* So I checked and the R2 version will arrive in October only it seems. So I think I'll get the R1 because do I want to wait five months? I don't think so.

Oh and checking the future released series, I saw that Tru Calling will come out too and man, I'm so tempted! Then I'm telling myself: must.be.strong! And.not.buy.every.boxset.under.the.sun. Even if I really want to *nodnod*

Look, one of the things everyone forgets about fanon is it fills in what people were thinking. It makes sense of *why* they did X, Y and Z. (Which, for a show with as many plot holes and inconsistencies as TS, is a necessity, IMO.) And one of the convenient things about fanon is the author can choose not to reinvent the wheel when trying to prove point A follows from point B. Fanon is a choice: you can choose the buttressing and baggage or you can abandon it and start over with a clean slate, and either way, other fans will go along for the ride. I never fully understand the problem. I mean, so Methos likes beer in fanon. Nothing in the series contradicts it, and lots of people like beer. Why the hell not go with it?

Exactly, I never understood why the fuss about fanon. I mean, as long as something hasn't been denied for good canon, it's game. And seriously, even if it had been denied? I could care less. I love fanon and enjoy those themes that are either pure invention or big extension of what the show offers *nodnod*

I love Fanon

I almost always find my fandoms via the fanfic and then I'll maybe catch the movie/show/book. Fanon is great; it's lame, badly-written cliches that suck.

I ordered Demon Under Glass and it just arrived today. Understand it's truly cheeztastic but I liked the little smidge of fanfic I found for it. Besides, handsome vampire, angsty Garett, possible love through the ages... has potential, no?

Oh yeah, I seem to remember how you wrote your first TS without ever having watched the show before - well, if I'm not mistaking you with someone else lol

I'm quite curious about DUG. Will you write a report? Or maybe you already did - I just came home, I haven't checked my flist yet *g*

And re:the potential, oh yeah I would think so too *g*

well, if I'm not mistaking you with someone else

Yuppers, that's me. *g* Saw my first ep after writing maybe fifteen fics - Insatiable and all the interludes and the first My Mongoose stories, including Captain Ellison Loses Command. All, all written with fanon concepts. Mwahahaha!

Will you write a report?

Sure. I'll watch it tonight and scribble something.

That thing about not being able to mention icons pisses me off so much. Everything about paid time does in fact because yes, if I know my time is about to run out my immediate reaction is to mention it because it's important damn it! I'm not hinting though and it annoys me so much that I have to sit and think if I should say anything or not. Just arghhhhh!!

I agree with you, it totally sucks - it's amazing how easily one can pass for a drama queen on LJ!

It really does suck, if I want to be seen as a drama queen I want it to be on my terms, no one elses *g*

*smooches with you*

So much love for your icon btw.

beautifully said and Oh so true! *smootches* it's the same thing for HP - JKR is very nice, but she keeps fading away from Sirius and Remus - I want more! And the details about the Marauders era are so little (thank God for that Pensieve scene though)... anyway: yeah, I agree. And yes, we all know they (Jim and Blair) fucked on the kitchen table - even *I* know that! *giggles*

see, scientists should ask themselves that question (yes it's an important one!): are people born slashers or does society (read: their friends) turn them into slashers?
