Jan. 22nd, 2006 08:13 pmWe'd planned on going to the movies to see Pompoko with tbf!Rissy but there was a problem with the underground and we arrived too late. So instead we wandered in the Marais and Saint Michel - had a drink at Starbucks, yes again, so sue me - and just had a nice walk. The weather was crisp, just the way I like it :-) And I came back just in time to see the end of "Faking It" [Hustle] which happens to be my favourite part of the episode, so me happy. Speaking of Hustle, it premiered in the US last week on the amc network. Wonder if it might mean the fandom will spread a little? Also what is the amc network? I don't think I've ever heard of it.
Oh and I might go and see Brokeback Mountain again, with tbf!Manu this time. He saw it yesterday as well and felt the love. So we might see it together after all.
Now, I wasn't going to do the Top 10 Ways to Tell you're Reading a Castalie Story but
starwatcher307 was curious about what I'd answer and I can't deny her anything so here it goes. Also, I'm well aware that some people are seriously getting tired of that meme - well you'll see, it's easy: don't click under the cut. I know, it's a shocker but it does work.
Top 10 Ways to Tell you're Reading a Castalie Story:
1- It's between 2.000 and 5.000 words - except for maybe three exceptions.
2- If you see it before the beta work, it might have been subjected to comma abuse - I think I have comma issue - and even after the beta work, there will be dash galore. I love dashes - don't ask me why. [PS: I was hesitating between hyphen and dash... but that's actually a dash here, isn't it? Or is it?]
3- There will be strict top/bottom dynamics. Blair bottoms, Charlie bottoms, Dean bottoms and Daniel does too. I might allude to them doing their big guys now and then because I'm nice like that - and I did once have Blair fuck Jim in an actual scene but the story demanded it - and because I do think they would enjoy doing it too, but truth is, in my world, they enjoy bottoming more - so of course, in my fics, that's exactly what happens.
4- If it's incest there will be angst and endless talks about all the problems that being with your brother provoke. Case in point New Don/Charlie #1. But I think I needed to get that out of my system so that I couldfinally do something a bit different - case in point New Don/Charlie #2. We'll see where the other Don/Charlie lead me :-)
5- If it's TS, Jim will easily be the one who goes after Blair. It's not that I think Jim is so open and in touch with his feelings that he would be all heart and flowers and stuff like that but it's that I think Jim is the kind of guys who, once he knows what he wants, goes for the kill so to speak. In my fics, it's never a first time situation in the sense that both men are deeply sexual beings and they know they like cocks, period. So the only thing that remains to be seen is how the relationship between Jim and Blair will work, but it's never really a problem of "I think I love you but I'm not sure you're into guys, actually I didn't think I was into guys myself and come to think of it I'm not so much into guy as into you and I don't know how to tell you blah blah blah".
6- If it's Numb3rs, Charlie will usually be the one who does the first move.
7- There's almost never any 'I love you'. Though the love is there - or it's supposed to cause that's how I intend the fic to be - I seldom find myself in such a situation that I feel the need to have the guys say the words.
8- The characters' names will be usedtoo much often in the dialogues, ie characters call each other by their names a lot, even when it's just the two of them. I try not to do that too much and actually delete a lot of the names before I send the fic to my beta but it does sneak in sometimes. This is actually something that has to do with me being, well, me because I use my friends' names a lot when I'm talking to them IRL. I keep telling myself that kind speech pattern is mine only and shouldn't be my characters' too but it's not easy breaking the habit.
9- It's a stream-of-consciousness fest. I apparently like to tell the story more than I like to show it. I'm trying to work on it, too. I think my new SPN fic kinda fits the bill. There is inner monologue and stream of consciousness but there're actual dialogues *gasp*
10- There's never any real plot. Jim and Blair will - maybe - mention a case they're working on but it's never the center of the story. Same thing with Numb3rs. Same thing with SG when I wrote in that fandom - it was always in the background.
I did ten, yay! It's weird cause I know there must be more than ten but it's awfully difficult finding them.

Yeah, really makes us dig deep and be objective about our own writing. It is fun, though.
starwatcher307 was curious about I'd answer and I can't deny her anything
Really? I didn't realize that. ::thinks furiously about what outrageous request I can make:: *g* Thanks for playing; I appreciate it, and I enjoyed your answers.
I was hesitating between hyphen and dash
The hyphen is two words put together to make one. Sometimes they're supposed to be that way, and sometimes I use a hyphen to signify to readers that these words are part of the same phrase. Like 'security-conscious airlines' or 'sun-dried tomatoes'. (The first, strictly speaking, is not necessary; the second is legitimate.)
A dash signals an 'aside' thought, where you break from the original direction and come back to it, like "Finally, he breathed a sigh of relief -- Blair was coming home! -- and allowed himself to drift into sleep." Or, you can break and finish with the second thought. "But getting back to the personal reaction thing, and you assigning the worst possible motives to my actions -- enough, already!"
Some is gut-feeling; a dash-pause is a little more of a break than a comma-pause, a little less of a break than a semicolon. None of it is cut and dried; an alternate useage can always be defended. So I wouldn't sweat it; the meaning will usually come through, regardless.

Date: 2006-01-22 08:56 pm (UTC)Lol, you too, huh? Me, I never know where to put them so, there's either too many or not nearly enough and they're never in the right places. *g*
I think Jim is the kind of guys who, once he knows what he wants, goes for the kill so to speak.
Yes, that's exactly right! *nods* The stories where he's all "I think I love you but I'm not sure you're into guys, actually I didn't think I was into guys myself and come to think of it I'm not so much into guy as into you and I don't know how to tell you blah blah blah", they totally weird me out.
If it's Numb3rs, Charlie will usually be the one who does the first move.
Again with the yes. I see Charlie as not seeing what's wrong with him and Don being together, so him making the first move is, to me, the logical conclusion.

Date: 2006-01-23 11:26 am (UTC)Though I do read those stories - there are lot of them in the fandom - and can enjoy them, they're not my favourites.
Nice to see we're still on the same page about so many things lol
