Fannish life - is there something better?

Now, another meme. Yes, again. Blaired from
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
I sorta organised them by categories so... it might be a little more than nine or ten if you look at it that way *cough*
So are we talking early fannish obsessions as in early? Cause okay we have first:
Star Trek: TOS: was My Very First Fangirl Experiment. I watched it religiously when I was a wee!Mouse, mourned its loss when I was nine and the network that aired it disappeared, almost had a heart attack when I learnt - years later - that 6 tapes would be released and saved money like you wouldn't believe to buy them, which I did - I still have those tapes, they're still special to me *clings to them* I even bought the books - and when I went to the US in 1997, I almost had another heart attack when I entered that bookstore and saw the gazillion ST books displayed for all to see. Thank God my friend Manu is a book junkie like I am - we spent whole afternoons in that bookstore.
Actually, the very first fanfic I ever wrote - and at the time I didn't know about fandom nor cyber life. I, in fact, didn't even have a computer - was a ST:TOS one. With the fandom knowledge I have now, I can tell you it was an AU - it told the story of Captain Kirk's first day on board of The Enterprise... the meeting of the crew and everything. Man! I'm all nostalgic now lol
What I loved so much in that show was the friendship between Kirk, Spock and McCoy and the wonderful loyalty the crew had for Kirk. I also was quite attracted to Kirk's intelligence and I loved how he was always turning the problem around so that a solution was possible. When I finally watched the movies and heard about the Kobayashi Maru test, I was ecstatic - I pull a Kabayashi Maru on a regular basis, only nobody in RL can really appreciate it *pout*
My favourite moments were when Kirk was in danger, in pain - either physical or mental - and just overall in a bad situation. And I loved when McCoy or Spock worried about him and had to come to the rescue. My love for h/c and angst? Comes from real early in my fannish life. It's definitely not something that appeared when I was a
And speaking of h/c and angst, it brings me to another obsession when I was a kid - actually, I still love it now:
Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque aka Saint Seiya: that anime was quite the big deal in France at the time - and well, lot of people my age can still sing the opening theme now *cough* - and this was also a nice obsession as far I was concerned. Mind you, I still love it now that I'm
Star Wars: I, sadly, don't remember when I watched the first two movies for the first time - but I remember myself, sprawled on the floor in front of the tv - totally riveted to the screen - and cringing as So Very Mean Emperor was killing - well, that was his plan, at least - Luke while Darth Vader was watching them, going from one to the other uncertainly, and Luke pleadingly calling out to his father, begging him for help. That scene, it stayed with me for a long time - and considering that a) it was on tape and b)it had a La Cing logo on it, it was before 1989. I don't know where that mean streak comes from, why I love to see my favourite characters hurt the most, but man, with scenes like that, it was certainly fueled, pfew!
I loved the whole trilogy because I really enjoyed characters with mental powers - it was so cool. And the Jedi really fit the bill. Also, Leia was so very awesome and though I could/couldn't care less about love-interest, sibling-love was definitely something I could relate to, and since my favourites were first Luke then Leia, well the whole Luke-Leia revelation was of the good as far as I was concerned *g* Incidentally, I also bought the books - or got them for my birthdays and stuff. And wow, just now? I suddenly wonder whether Luke ever married Mara Jade *ponder*
Other oldie shows: Bonanza [fave was Little Joe] - The Big Valley [Heath] - Time Tunnel [Tony] - etc... I've always been attracted to the younger partners/brothers/friends and if there was angst involved, like Heath' past, all the better *g*
80s Shows: The A-Team [Futé, ie Face] Airwolf [Stringfellow Hawke] - V [Martin, and well, Phillip] - did I mention I liked angsty character?
Freaky shows/books: Twilight Zone which scared the shit ouf of me - I remember watching some episodes hidden under the table - and the Collection Terreur books. One of my aunts offered me one book from this collection when I was eleven and it was a revelation. They all dealt with dark/darker themes like serial killers, ghosts, apocalypse and I was just enthralled! I'd read my first 'adult' book when I was ten [Peachtree Road by Anne Rivers Siddons] and even though I still read kid books, I needed more and I'm quite grateful that my family understood it. So this is where my love for dark theme comes from, methinks *g*
Stephen King: I'm a huge fan of Stephen King. Read my first one when I was twelve [after I discovered the Collection Terreur] and fell for that author, hook line and sinker. I have almost all of his books - I truly love his work, he's one of my favourite authors, right next to Bernard Werber, René Barjavel and Bernard Lentéric. He's also the one who made me interested in writing - I started to notice styles, trends and stuff and suddenly writing was becoming something that had as much as power as reading, you know? Quite an interesting revelation that was, too *g*
Bernard Lentéric: I'm adding that author as well, because I think his book, La Nuit des Enfants Rois, is where I was introduced to dark themes such as rape and male rape in a pretty direct way, and considering that so untasteful taste of mine for non-con stories, well, I just couldn't not mention that one. The book isn't about rape - but what happens at the beginning of the book to those kids shapes the whole story, so yeah. I was like, thirteen or something, I think. Lentéric wrote compelling and complex stories with even more complex characters - man, I want to read his books again, now.
Other Shows: like, of course, SG and TS and Quantum Leap and X-Files and Highlander - well, you get the picture. Although those are more recent than the rest, obviously. But still, they continued shaping the obsessive-compulsive fan I am today, so there *g*
Damn, I really like

CPs and WFs
Date: 2005-05-11 11:17 pm (UTC)"Warm Fuzzies" and "Cold Pricklies" are not unknown in the US, but I've more often heard it used as a form of "pop" psychology, with mothers and children, sometimes with teachers and students. If someone (usually younger) does something good, the other party (usually older) is advised to remember to give a "warm fuzzy". This can range from words of approval, to a hug, to just a nod and a wink at the right time. On the other hand, an action that the older person doesn't like will earn a "cold prickly", such as a frown, reprimand, name on the board...
I think the terms are used because the meaning is almost intuitive. And, now that they've been mentioned in LJ, I wouldn't be surprised to see them spread.

Re: CPs and WFs
Date: 2005-05-12 09:28 am (UTC)In the case I mentioned, Cold Prickly and Warm Fuzzy refer to something specific to fanfics or tv series - and it's apparently different from the 'real' definition. Interesting.

Date: 2005-05-11 11:18 pm (UTC)Yes, yes, yes! The worry! I think I love that in all fandoms - I am such an h/c and angst junkie, too. *bg* Emotional torment! Make it hurt, man!
(b/c you weren't born yet *bg*) I was one of those kids for whom Star Wars changed. my. life. hee! Completely pivotal media moment.
Do you like Stephen King's recent stuff? I was a huge fan, but lately? Not so much. Gotta admire that kind of staying power, though.
That was fun meme to read! :)

Date: 2005-05-12 09:54 am (UTC)Emotional torment! Make it hurt! Yay! That should be an icon lol
SW has been a pivotal media moment for so many people, I'm always a little envious of those who watched it when it came out first. Like, it had to be so cool, you know? *g*
It depends on what you mean by 'recent' stuff, but I'll admit I liked some of his last book less then the previous ones. Having said that, I still have to read and buy the last Dark Tower books and since it's one of my favourite series of his, I hope I won't get disappointed *g*
That was fun meme to read! :)
Thanks *g* So are you going to do it yourself? Or did you and I missed it? It's entirely possible too *cough*

Date: 2005-05-12 03:47 pm (UTC)It could be as early as the end of August, or as late as October. (One year X-Files didn't even come on until Halloween. I was so bitter. *g*)
This seems like a meme that requires actual thought and potentially time, so I think I'm gonna pass. (I'm actually writing like a fiend right now, believe it or not. I'm afraid to jinx it. :)

Just for nothing -- my dad looks enough like Ernest Borgnine to be his fraternal twin brother. (Not identical, but damn close.) It's one of those things that you don't notice because it's under your nose -- the kids in his shop class picked up on it one year, and once they pointed it out, we wondered how we'd never seen it before. We used to tell Dad that he should go to Hollywood and get signed on as Dominic's long-lost brother, and start a big, money-making career that way. He never did, LOL!

Date: 2005-05-12 10:02 am (UTC)My godfather was the spitting image of Joe Dassin back then [well okay, except for the eye thing - the squint?] - enough that when he went out, crazy fangirls would jump on him, screaming and crying, and he had to sign for them in order for them to leave him in peace. Man, my mom, aunts and him love telling that story lol

Thank you sooo much ! I haven't watched Hornblower yet but tried the yaoi (all 3 of them). My favorite was the one without subtitles, Boku no Sexual Harassment. It was really funny to see yaoi in a daily work and average "salaryman" context, and the smut was nice too. *g*
The Seme/Uke thing still bothers me a bit, but I had a good time watching those anime. Thank you !!
And the Veronica Mars season finale was yesterday ! (I mean, available on efnet yesterday :p) So now that I have the whole first season, I can mail it to you ! I'm not in Paris tomorrow through sunday so I'll post it monday. It will be like an early birthday present.
Oooooh I hope you enjoy this show !!!

"Leeees chevaliers du Zodia-aaaa-que, s'eeeeen vont toujours à l'atta-aaaa-que, eeeeen chantant cette chanson bien haut, c'est la chanson des héros!"
my favourite was ... Shiriu? i confuse them because i haven't actually seen an ep in years. the blind one. i didn't like Seiya that much, because he was the manliest of them all. well, i didn't think that at the time, but retrospectively, that was certainly why. he's such a BOY! whereas all the others have long hair, these huge eyelashes, blush prettily ... v. androgynous! :)
no subject
Date: 2005-05-12 04:27 am (UTC)I never cared more for Shiriu after the whole Medusa-eyes incident - there's only so much self mutilation I can take lol Phoenix was my fav *g*
no subject
Date: 2005-05-12 06:06 am (UTC)i can't remember what happened exactly, as i said it's been YEARS since i saw an ep. BUT i remember reading somewhere that at the beginning, the French translators thought Andromeda (that's the pink armour, green hair one, right?) was a girl so they gave him a girl's voice. so ... your sister isn't that far from reality. plus, look at his armour, its got BOOBS!! lol

Date: 2005-05-12 10:07 am (UTC)Shiryu yeah that was him.
And the manliest of them all? That was Ikky, man! I didn't especially like Shiryu cause he was too, I don't know, serious? Though I loved the deep friendship he had with Seiya *g*
no subject
Date: 2005-05-12 04:25 am (UTC)did you already forget the Donald incident?!
aaah les chevaliers du zodiaque... *sighs happily* I miss that! my favorites were of course Phoenix and Andromeda, Cygnus and that girl whose name I can't remember - you know, she was in Greece and was a damn bitch but in fact underneath her mask she was very soft... not Seiya's sister, the other one (with greenish hair I think...)
aaah Stephen King *fangirls*

That was Shina - I quite loved the relationship she had with Seiya, it was quite interesting *g*
no subject
Date: 2005-05-12 10:13 am (UTC)of course you liked Shun! he was perfect for you - completely fucked up beta (bordering on sub?) I, of course, prefered Ikki - I'm sooo predictable *sighs*
