My my, we have a new Prime Minister? At first I blinked at the screen because I was like, tell me that happened today please pretty please? Cause saying that I'm not into politics would be the understatement of the millennium but I do have my limits and I didn't like the idea of having missed something like that, but then I realised it was an after-affect of Sunday's referendum result, so I hadn't really missed anything. So we have Dominique de Villepin, now? Okay then.

*note to self* Remember to watch Les Guignols tonight.

Changing the subject - my mailbox was so shiny this morning! It brought my "Call of the Wild" DVD! dS slashy goodness, yay! I'll watch that today. And after that I'll watch some Numb3rs cause I'm in withdrawal. I alread knew that, really, but my convo on the phone [yes, on the phone, heee!] with my [livejournal.com profile] babycakesin yesterday sorta reminded me of it all over again. So today a) "Call of the Wild" watching + "Uncertainty Principle" watching [plus some others, I just don't know yet - "Sniper Zero", think "Sniper Zero", Mousey! and tonight, hmm I'd say a) Eddie Izzard + b) Firefly. Shiny program, isn't it? I think so too. I studied this morning and I swear I'm starting to saturate at the moment and since I don't want that, really - and not before two days of day-long exams if possible - I'm taking the day off, so to speak. Hence the intense telly watching *clings to CDs and DVDs*

Speaking of Numb3rs, it reminds me of those two Larry/Charlie that I wanted to rec. I read them recently and they're pretty brilliant so you might want to give them a shot - Magnus Force and Standard Deviation by [livejournal.com profile] miriam_heddy. If you'd like some Numb3rs slash without the 'cest factor, well you can try those, they're 100% safe *g* And really well written. Magnus Force in particular rocked my world *g*

DUDE! I knew I'd forgotten to mention something big! Richard Burgi in Firefly [in "The Message"] which wasn't a surprise per se, since I knew he'd played in it but this time I saw him on my own self and all - I don't have that much to say except for a) he was so fucking gorgeous, all in black and b) he sure knows how to play the psycho bad guy, wow! badass!Ellison was one thing, but psycho!Lomack was definitely another. I know it's not nice to root for the Bad Guy but that was Richard Burgi, man!

That was Richard Burgi, man!

Did you see the movie Starship Troopers 2? It was only a so-so movie (to put it mildly), but Richard Burgi ROCKED!! I never knew that "grizzled" could sit so well on a man. It might be worth renting just to watch the pretty, as well as his awesome acting.

Haven't seen it, no. I think the DVD was released, though. To tell the truth, seeing what I thought of Starship Troopers, I wasn't exactly in any hurry to watch the second movie. Except for Richard Burgi's role in it, all right, I'll admit lol

I think it wasn't much like the first movie - many reviewers complained about that. When it came out, Bert Hayling (spokesman for the Richard Burgi Fan Club) asked us to leave a review at Amazon.com. This is what I wrote --

First -- I didn't see the original movie. I'm not a fan of action movies, or horror movies, or war movies, and this was a combination of all three. I tuned in only to see Richard Burgi, who starred in UPN's "The Sentinel".

Given that, I thought the movie worked well. Yes, the tone and visual aspects were dark but, in effect, that highlighted the horror/futility of this war, fighting a difficult -- perhaps impossible -- enemy. The bugs' escalation of abilities and the potential for secretly infesting the Federation is a suitably horrific idea, worthy of Dax's all-out final effort to prevent it. Some of the bug scenes were -- as mentioned -- quite gross, but perhaps necessary. It becomes a visceral recognition for the audience of how dangerous/pervasive this enemy is.

Although I found the movie merely adequate, I thought Richard Burgi turned in a 5-star performance. His depiction of a cynical, embittered, war-weary, but ultimately pragmatic combat veteran was right on target. This was a heroic non-hero who had "issues" with the military, but kept doing his duty because it was necessary, and because it *was* his duty, a man who cut through all the military nonsense to lay bare the ugly, underlying realities of life -- and death -- in the Federation's war against the Bugs, with a biting dark humor that was very effective. This was a man who upheld his own gut-level codes of honor, while ignoring the false sense of "honor" that the Federation tried to impose. His matter-of-fact observations about the roles of officers and 'troopers' were delivered with a solid, almost frightening, down-to-earth realism -- I could believe this man, and everything he said. In short, Mr. Burgi's portrayal of Captain Dax was masterful.

Trying not to give away the ending -- Dax would have been highly irate, I'm sure, at the use the Federation made of his name. The ending demonstrated vividly that, while there may be honor in individuals, there is very little honor in the higher echelons of these particular "Powers that Be". One is left to wonder if, ultimately, all efforts toward honor are doomed to failure, and a bleak realization that, perhaps, the individual counts for nothing.

In short, while not really a pleasant movie, it was effective. And, if you're a fan of Richard Burgi, Starship Troopers 2 is well worth seeing as he demonstrates his excellent talent as an actor.

= = =

So there you go. Since you tend to like the 'darker' end of storytelling, anyway, you might actually enjoy this movie. And RB as eye-candy is FI-I-INE!

Feel free to quote away! And my favourite part... difficult to say. I have a soft spot for the whole History part - with the wars and empires and religion and stuff, this cracked me up something fierce. I adore when he mimics the guys he's speaking of. Like with guys pushing the stones to Stonehenge, ya know? When they're insulting the druids and just, pushing and all lol Also I looooooove when he makes fun of the Americans for arriving at the end of the war, because yeah, that's what everyone is always thinking about lol They're like the cavalerie, once everyone fought and died and stuff, they're showing. That was good lol The moon monster and the squirrel with the flute that gives it power was hilarious and just... well okay pretty much the whole show, really lol
From: [identity profile] babycakesin.livejournal.com
oh the Holy Ghost bit!

now go see the other show, because that's the one I've been watching over and over again for the past few weeks lol

and the part with the grim ripper? and the little old ladies? and the SHOWER!? The shower bit keeps me laughing every single time I get under the shower lol And the techno-fear? and the plane's pilot? and... well, the whole thing really *giggles*
From: [identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com
I realised I'd forgotten to mention the pilot bit in my other comment so I'm commenting on him here lol God the pilot cracked me up! When he starts to go down with his plane to protect his chocolate and make sure Eddie knows he's the boss and all lol And the techno-fear rocked too. Then again, dès qu'un sketch parle d'informatique et/ou d'internet, je suis au premier rang lol
From: [identity profile] babycakesin.livejournal.com
I especially like how he doesn't give full sentences *giggles* - so fucking brilliant - and the 'care for a top-up?/tea with the vicar'

Oh and the moment when he's talking about giving back the colonies? With England hidding the colonies behind its back? LOL!
